What’s For Dinner?

Do you cook more or less on weekends?

When Friday comes around I breathe a sigh of relief. After juggling work, carpools, sports and various other after-school activities all week, and making family dinners to accommodate all the comings and goings, I take the night off from cooking. For us, going out during the week crunches into homework time and inevitably pushes bedtimes back too far, so I try to have a dinner that works for everyone’s schedule. But after cooking all week, I use the weekend to recover and rejuvenate.

Knowing we’re going out gives us all something to look forward to. This weekly excursion breaks our go-go-go cycle and gives us some family time before we get caught up in the weekend, which during baseball season can be as busy as the school week.

A lot of friends use a different approach. The weekend offers them the time to eat at home in a more relaxed and unrushed way. They find the flexibility the weekend offers gives them more opportunity to cook and get ready for the week, often preparing meals in advance.

What about you? When it comes to preparing meals for your family are you more stressed out during the week or on the weekend?

I cook more on the weekends for two reasons: I love to cook, it’s a creative outlet for me (but I don’t like to be rushed); and it makes life easier during the week. I cook up a storm on Saturdays and Sundays, making things that will keep well or can be “disguised” as something else later in the week. There is just my husband and myself so it’s easy to cook for the week this way. I buy and keep those small boxes of our favorite frozen veggies which makes it even easier during the week to make a quick supper.

Less, actually, because the weekend for me is about spending time with friends and relaxing - therefore, more restaurants and meals out.

Sunday morning might be the exception - I try and have a rather chill Sunday morning and part of that is maybe an omelette or something breakfast-y.

But on the whole I cook far more during the week than I do on weekends.

I think Cheryl and I were separated at birth because she pretty much does the same thing I do. Cooking for me is a creative outlet as well and I love cooking on the weekends for friends and family….and also for myself and my boyfriend for during the week.

While I cook during the week, Sat and Sun are my days to cook extra for the coming week. I take breakfast and lunch with me every day to school. Planned overs are good.

Sun I plan to cook a boneless pork loin and add vegetables to roast along with it. Depends on what I find at DeKalb Farmer’s Market. I love baby artichokes, Brussels sprouts, beets, and parsnips to name a few. I might add 2 chicken breasts and have the oven full. That will make several healthy meals as well as 2-3 meals to go in the freezer for later.

Slightly more on weekends. My interest in cooking went missing for a while, but we just found out my husband’s cholesterol is 400+, which has gotten my creative juices flowing again to look for meal ideas to help bring his levels down. Unlike the frenzied work week, Saturday is a relaxed day when I don’t have to rush anywhere, so I will do something big, leaving leftovers for Sunday or later in the week. Unlike my H who unconditionally loves all things edible, boredom is a problem for me and I crave novelty so I enjoy looking for new ideas and have found a few really good crockpot recipes like a lower cholesterol moussaka. I’m thinking about spending even more weekend time cooking to be able to freeze meals for our convenience during the week.

I live alone and work two full time jobs. I cook all my evening meals for Monday trough Friday on Sunday. I cook meats and fresh vegetables and put each meal in divided containers. That way when I do get home all I have to do is warm it up. I am on Weight Watchers and have learned if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. I would come home hungry and eat something easy and not healthy.

I cook almost every weeknight, but we generally eat out once on the weekends - it varies which night. I love to cook, but everyone needs a break every now and then. My husband usually handles the grill for one weekend evening as well, so I guess I really get off for most of the weekend.

I’m too impatient to cook. Sometimes I get inspired…. but would rather sit with my kids/family and enjoy the complete dinner time.

I too, cook up a storm on the weekends, usually Sunday. Something about sundays and being in the kitchen.

During winter, I’ll do a pot of chili or soup on Sunday, then work it all week long. This time of year, it’s a roast or a whole chicken. I can get up to 6 meals out of one chicken. Cook it on Sunday, have it sunday night, pull the meat off and have chicken salad Monday night, then boil the carcus for stock for soups, and freeze the stock for future use.

Lately, I cook a bunch of pancakes on Sunday, and freeze them, three to a stack. My daughter takes them out, throws them in the microwave, and she has a hot breakfast on the way to school.

I love to cook!!!!! I hate going out to eat. I don’t care what anyone says, I enjoy being in the kitchen. Once in a great while, we will go out for dinner, but not too often.

I cook on the weekends for the whole week, usually on Sunday. My wife puts the food into containers and puts them away. I start thinking about what food to cook on Thursday or so, then shop on Friday night after work. I may do a little prep work on Sat. but most of the cooking happens on Sunday.

I don’t like to use the microwave but it is what works for us right now. Though I wouldn’t say it is killing me, zapping off some of the nutrition but that’s about it.

My microwave very rarely gets used. Only for popcorn, and re-heating leftovers…..

I certainly DO NOT “cook” in my microwave, that’s what the stove and oven are for - Cooking!!!

I also cook on Sunday for the whole week, breakfast, lunch and dinner. I like to be able to relax after working every day and not worry about what to cook. It makes weekends a little hectic but it’s worth the piece of mind the other five days!
