ASO gets 7 Grammy nominations

CLASSICAL BLOG

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus’s CDs, on the Telarc and Deutsche Grammophon labels, have snagged seven nominations for the 49th Grammy Awards, which were announced today.

Several of the nominations are for engineers or producers or composers. One, in the Best Opera Recording category, would go to the performers and album engineer. Given the ASO’s long history with Grammy nominations and awards the nominations comes as no great surprise: with 23 awards and countless nominations, it’s rare when the ASO, or its producers, don’t make the list.

Nominations for contemporary music are especially valuable, a powerful piece of encouragement for the ASO’s progressive-minded mission, balancing new and old music. All three of the wet-ink works that the ASO released in the past year received nominations.

In performance last season, Osvaldo Golijov’s “Ainadamar,” a flamenco-infused opera about the murder of Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca and the fragility of society, was the event of the year. It was recorded by Deutsche Grammophon, the ASO’s first CD with the prestigious German label. It’s a very strong contender for Best Opera Recording.

Both David Del Tredici’s “Paul Revere’s Ride” — a response to the 9/11 attacks — and Chris Theofanidis’ “The Hear and Now” — on perfumed, meditative texts by Sufi poet Rumi — were given world premieres by the ASO and Chorus on the same concert. Both were recored by Telarc, both are up for Best Classical Contemporary Composition, a composer’s award.

What is surprising, and a little disappointing, is that the ASO Chorus’ first-ever a capella recording, led by ASO Chorusmaster Norman Mackenzie, didn’t get a nod for the performers, just for Telarc engineer Jack Renner.

Here’s the excerpted list of ASO nominations, pulled from the Grammy Awards website. For the full list, go to www.grammy.com.
