2/16: Protest held to bring Warren Ballentine & Al Sharpton back to Atlanta radio

About 15 to 20 people were at a protest this afternooon to get Warren Ballentine and Al Sharpton back on the FM airwaves in front of Radio One offices in downtown Atlanta today when I stopped by briefly to check things out.
As of today, Ballentine and Sharpton are gone from Grown Folks 102.5, which is now gospel. (Praise moved from 97.5). Recently, Radio One dumped smooth jazz for straight R&B at 107.5 and has begun simulcasting on 97.5. Morning host Steve Harvey and afternoon host Michael Baisden made the move. Sharpton and Ballentine, which are all talk and far more political, were dumped.
Fans of Ballentine already have posted a petition, which has 905 names as of my last check.
“We’re making a stand,” said Dolorise Chapman, a government employee from Lithonia. “He keeps us up to date with information we don’t get anywhere else.”
“We need them back on the radio. We need talk radio for the black community,” said Anita Bracy, a cashier at Uptown Comedy Corner. I’ve learned about Sean Bell. I’ve learned about Jena Six. I’ve learned about Genarlow Wilson. I didn’t get this from CNN or Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck.” WAOK-AM, she feels, is inadequate in comparison.
“Al Sharpton spent years protesting,” added David French, an unemployed Atlanta man. “Now we get to protest for him.”
I can’t say this is a major groundswell per se. And there weren’t a lot of employees at Radio One today because “our offices are closed today for President’s Day,” said General Manager Tim Davies.
His reaction to the protest? “Hey! It’s a free country. And it’s good to see people are active and care about their radio station. That’s a great thing.” But don’t expect the protest to change management’s mind.
Problem: ratings for Ballentine & Sharpton were lower than that of Harvey or Baisden.

Warren and Al, reminded me that I was still black when I got up in the morning..They were the best on the radio. They kept us informed of what black america sitll needs to accomplish. This was our T.V, our Entertainment, pleae don’t hurt listeners. My nine year old daughter loved to listen to Warren and Al, she understood that there message brought hope to Africian Americans. I’m not sure there rating were down that much…We really and truely need them….Bring them back home….Thanks Diana

The Portable People Monitor is an absolute joke, and you’d have to be a fool to believe it accurately reflects the listening audience. With both shows, the majority of people calling in were from Atlanta. So don’t give me this BS about the ratings weren’t high enough.
This was politics, not business. Many black people want news and information on the radio, and Sharpton/Ballentine provided that. But these radio companies only want us to have music and comedy, keeping us uninformed and apathetic. It’s sickening.

May I suggest that we write, as well as call Radio One to express our displeasure with their descision to “dumb down” Metro Atlanta radio. It’s obvious that a mindless audience, in a feel good state of mind, is more “valuable” to Radio One than one that is culturally aware and civic minded. I refuse to listen to 107.5 or 97.5 under this new format. I can do without more of this type of radio.

Just when we need serious talk now that Obama is in office - here we go with a move to “dumb us down.” Too bad, so sad. So Warren and Rev were lower in ratings that Harvey and Baidsden. SO WHAT? You have 4 talk hosts. So you drop 3 and 4???? Makes no media marketing sense to me. The former model - grown folks/talk radio made sense. It kept a highly proprietary listening fan base all day. It’s what’s called a “loss leader” - but it keeps your audience faithful, consistent and sustainable. Whoever made this decision made a clearly narrow-minded one. Reminds me of early decision with BET. It was (and I say: WAS) a relief to see Ms. Hughes come on the scene to talk to us “grown folk” like we wanted to be talked to. Now it looks like she and her team are making decisions straight out of Bob Johnson’s playbook with BET. And you know what he ultimately did: HE SOLD OUT !!!

The white racists in this city want to keep all the black voices off the radio—-I’m getting tired of it. It’s just another way the white people use to keep the people of color down in Atlanta. Al Sharpton needs to be back on the radio to talk about all the injustice the black community faces on a daily basis. I may move back to Detroit if this keeps up—up there, we have a voice.

wow a truly frightning blog. I am originally from NY and Al Sharpton is truly one of the biggest scam artists around, he should be getting out of jail about now for the tawana brawly scam. He doesn’t inform people of the real black america, he informs black america of exaggerated tales of discrimination so he can continue to reap the rewards of his race baiting. He is not an informer of poor race relations, he is an example of poor race relations. I find it truly sobering that people actually think taking him off the air is dumbing down a station. Their is absolutely nothing that can dumb a station down more than Sharpton, and that is not an endightment of his intelligence, but rather the pawns he uses to make his fortune.

If ratings are down for Sharpton, advertisers won’t pay to advertise on his show. It’s called a business decision. Of course, I shouldn’t expect you to understand that. Take a ride around the city and you’d think no white person has ever done anything in Atlanta to deserve any recongnition, that only blacks have. When was the last time a white person was seriously considered for any position of power in this city? Never. We’re always stuck with the best non-white the city can come up with and in the cases of the last two police chiefs for both DeKalb and Atlanta we were handed two worthless chiefs who were both fired from teir last positions. Face it, most blacks who feels whites are so racist feel this way because they’re so racist themselves. Al shows up anytime there’s a dime to be made off of poor and uneducated black people, same as Jesse Jackson. Anyone with an ounce of gray matter knows that someone like Clark Howard would be a great asset to this city as Mayor but as a white man, he doesn’t stand a snowballs chance in hell of being elected. Again, this is Atlanta and we have to settle with the best non-white all the while this city is out of control with crime and corruption. Blacks are just as racist as any white person. I believe in free speech and even if these two are race baiters, I would rather have their voices available than squelched—as I won’t want Rush squelched either. This was probably a monetary decision in that they didn’t get enough audience, or revenues in return for the programming. Maybe the people who want them need to agree to spend money on their advertisers.

Hey Atlantans and all interested, We need to listen to 102.5 and 107.5 one more day but with pens in hand.We should write-down the names of the advertisers and boycott their products.Thats the only thing that Radio One is going to listen too. Radio-One doesn’t give a hoot about what it deems a liberal audience and it desires to quash its voice.Its management agrees with the rhetoric of Rush,Hannity, etc. and would never quash it. They do not want AL or Ballantine shedding light on the fallacies propigated by Rush,Hannity, etc. It would be profitable to post the web sites of the advertisers and we across the country express our displeasure with this discriminatorial move.Steve and Michael, if truly are with their people, will understand that they have been played by the accent of green over pride.

Today, was the worst to again start my work day looking for something good to listen to on the radio no Warren and Rev D—-. we the people want hear these guys on the air waves in atlanta. Warren has become a person who let’s the everyday people’s around the counrty now how we as a person we have a voice and you can count on him to set the record staright when it comes down to the media and Rev. he’s just what we needed to just KEEP IT REAL no sugar coating, Rev. will fight to the end and even go to jail to get people to pay attention so we need them back on the air in atlanta. Radio One wake up and give the people there daily bread, that was promised by GOD. The people want it. We can’t get this stuff on CNN, FOX AND NO WAY IN HELL FROM SEAN,RUSH AND BECK SO GET IT GOING. Radio One - whats the point or purpose of your presence in Atlanta now. Yesterday afternoon as I flipped thru the stations programmed in my car RADIO ONE sounded just like the rest of the HO HUM STATIONS systems. BLACK TALK RADIO is distinctive, empowering and mostly revitalizing. Much needed yesterday today and tomorrow for predominantly Urban or Black markets.
Warren Ballentine and Al Sharpton are (were) the only accolades to radio anywhere in urban markets. DUH IF REALITY TV DOES SO WELL WHY CANT REAL RADIO SURVIVE AND RISE TO THE TOP. Its not about tucking your tail between your legs and doing/sounding like the rest.
ITS A NEW ECONOMY. REVIEW President Obama’s funding campaign strategies. His team sought and utilized NEW ECONOMY METHODS. Thus the success. DO NOT DEPEND on now financially leaking corporate ad dollars. The corporations are suffering too and of course URBAN STATIONS get cut first. It becomes a domino effect and eventually it all will be minimized to almost nothing.
My final point here is I Love the RHOA and looking at the response here on this blog or topic versus the response on weekly RHOA AJC reviews - we see why ATLANTA GEORGIA will forever be LIGHTS OUT.

I guess I’m missing the boat here. Somehow I thought the greatest thing about electing Obama was his non-racist approach to uniting the country - not just politically but socially as well. Am I wrong that a Sharpton and others like him who, it seems to me, makes a point of avoiding the big picture to present and appeal to a black position of second-class citizenry somehow just doesn’t live up to that standard?

Bottom line..all decisions made at Radio One go through Cathy Hughes. This sister owns more radio stations than any one person in the world. Just like Bob “Steppinfetchit” Johnson did, she sold Black folks out for her own gain.

Atlanta radio sucks. Get satellite radio and you can still listen to Warren and the worthless Rev. Al, plus, you’ll have better listening options (talk, comedy, etc.). I’d rather pay the small monthly fee to be able to listen to commercial-free music (of any era/genre) when I want, and be able to catch good talk shows like Warren Ballentine and Joe Madison.

This is really sad. The mention that the rating were lower than Steve Harvey and Micheal Baisden, thats because there shows were on during the middle of the day. Everyone knows the drive to work and drive home are the most popular time spots.
Al isn’t the most respected black man but he does make some valid points on his show. His show allowed us to say the things we wanted to say without getting in trouble or looked at differently. His show was about current issues that effected the black community.
Warren did a really good job trying to structure the black family / man. He gave a vision of hope, he allowed callers to understand what really happens from a political point of view.
I will do whatever it takes to get them back.

What you people aren’t understanding is that Radio One is a business. They took him off the air because the ratings were so low they couldn’t sell advertising around it. Ballentine and Sharpton were irrelevant to Atlanta. They trumpetted a political agenda formed in Chicago and New York and tried to supplant it as marching orders to any Black ear that would bend their way. Anyone who listened to the pathetic quibbling between Ballentine and Roland Martin knows the patronizing ego fest first hand.
How about someone who can actually research local issues relevant to Atlanta? There aren’t many on either side of the dial who do that (Martha Zoller, Boortz, and Herman Kane (kind-of)). Why doesn’t Alexis Scott try her hand at it?

I am not a big fan of the Al Sharpton or Warren Ballentine shows, but did they have to replace them with music? We have enough music on the air to listen to. We need discussion and social commentary that reflects what is going on in the black community. The talk show hosts on WSB and WGKA, while they have something to say, don’t refelct or represent (and they son’t pretend to) what REALLY is going on in our community. It’s not only important for Blacks but for Whites as well. how else will someone from rural Idaho know what is really happening in New Orleans?? Ignorance is not bliss and non stop music makes for ignorance.

American LOL “settled” this country- try again. The country was already “settled” it was inhabited so it’s not possible to discover or settle a land that’s already occupied a group of people. All you have to do is read some of these idiotic posts to understand why we need black talk radio. Sharpton and Ballentine discussed topics and issues that professional propagandists like Limbaugh and Boortz would never touch. Radio One must not be allowed to erase 5 hours of progressive talk without any repercussions. We must turn up the heat on Radio One.
Rational radio is always taken off the Atlanta airwaves, whether the host is white or black. This nonsense must end. They took Air America out of the Atlanta market also. Just like 102.5, it was broadcast on a weak signal. Progressive radio IS ALWAYS on a weak signal, which makes it impossible to reach a wide audience. And then they can always say, “the ratings weren’t high enough” whether it’s true or not. This whole notion of black people only wanting to hear a music/comedy mix with a little bit of news sprinkled in is absurd. If the brain-dead Southern morons can choose between The Regular Guys OR Rush Limbaugh,then we should have the variety of Steve Harvey AND Warren Ballentine.

What the hell is going on? I do believe Atlanta has enough urban and R&B radio stations that play all the same songs over and over.I refuse to believe Rev.Sharpton and Mr.Ballentine shows didn’t have many listners. I think its great there is gospel channel, however, I listen to 102.5 because of the calibur of material and show hosts that “were” on there. I didn’t know there was a change and for two days I couldn’t find my morning wake up and ride home conversation. It totally through me off. At lunch I listened to Warren and Rev. Al. I think it was a mistake to take them off. I hope when I get in my car this morning will hear Steve on 107.5 but if not, I will have to tune into another channel like 104.1 because I can’t stand 103.3, 107.9, and 95.5. I bet 102.5/97.5 or whatever it is now will soon learn that they will lose their listeners to another station. GOOD LUCK with this ridiculous change. PEACE, Your lost listener

Well. I have have in with Radio One myself I live in Cincinnati where radio one took off the black talk station the Buzz, in favor of gospel. My favortie talk show host Nathan Ive is now on just the weekends. Radio One doesn’t know it’s own talent. They keep promoting the big names, but they suck at radio. I liked Warren, but Nathan Ive is 10 x better. This is the slow demise of black talk radio.

I enjoyed Sharpton so much that I would cringe when Baisden started with his same old rhetoric about black relationships and DRAMA!! Enough already! He is just making money off of the same tacky subjects that will be around forever. This issue is much larger than Rev Sharpton and Mr Ballentine being pulled from Radios across the country. Its an affront to what is considered “left wing” and “liberal” talk shows across the country. Bill Press, a “progressive” talk show host has now launched a campaign for the FCC “enforce” contracts that ensure a proper balance on the airwaves. Unfortunately, this smells of the highly disfavored “Fairness doctrine”.
What needs to occur is “liberal”, “progressive” and “left wing” supporters begin to buy their own television stations so they can present their own agendas. This issue is much larger than Rev Sharpton and Mr Ballentine being pulled from Radios across the country. Its an affront to what is considered “left wing” and “liberal” talk shows across the country. Bill Press, a “progressive” talk show host has now launched a campaign for the FCC “enforce” contracts that ensure a proper balance on the airwaves. Unfortunately, this smells of the highly disfavored “Fairness doctrine”.
What needs to occur is “liberal”, “progressive” and “left wing” supporters begin to buy their own television stations so they can present their own agendas. 102.5 consistently has faired lower than 104.1…Steve Harvey and Baisden are the strongest shows on 102.5 and are competitive in their time slots vs. 104.1 ..so those shows were eliminated in order to increase market listenership so that the revenue dollars from advertising can increase, if that doesnt happen people at the station will loose jobs..this decision may have save many jobs at the station…ie we are not listening in high enough numbers to warrant keeping the shows…the nubmers are below..for person listening over 12+..they dont lie…
V103 is always #1 WSB AM is always #2
104.1 is 3rd
107.9 is 4th..they have consistenly improved with the changes they have made-Im a Ryan fan but the station has cont to climb due to changes…and for the record I dont lisetn to 107.9 i just follow the ratings and was just as surprised an many of you may be..
102.5 is 9th…and as they made changes at 107.9 and ratings improved..the mindset is success is duplicated…sad but true…

It is a shame that Rev. Sharpton and Warren off the air in Atlanta. Those two activists were responsible for keeping people informed of the unjust around the nation. Cathy Hughes, registered Republican, has always been a ruthless on her back kind of business woman and I use that term as loosely as Ms. Hughes peddled her womanhood to get ahead at WHUR-FM, where she began as Alden Lawson’s secretary. She has never loved herself much, much less black folks. Very disappointed in the decision to remove Warren and Rev. Al. (Mostly Rev. Al) I won’t point fingers at anyone, mainly because it won’t do anyone good. I will say this, Black America will no longer take what you give us, we will demand what we need. Right now, as someone else expressed, we need the truth. If we can’t get it from your station, we will get it from another source, that’s a promise. I no longer listen to 102.5, I am not a fan of Bafoonery nor do I appreciate a show that promotes homosexuality and promiscuity amongst our young. While I may not like or agree with these shows, they have an audience that I would never deny the right to enjoy or supress what another human being needs to express. I hope that there will be a change in the decision and put Warren and Rev. Al back on the radio, if not on 102.5, give us these voices on another station. We want it, we need it.

Well Rev. Al Sharpton is not a radical he is very moderate and he is not a teacher nor does he claim to be. Rev Al is a LISTENER! He listens to all his listeners and often reserves his own opinions. He even listens to the Very IGNORANT LIKE those who comment negatively about him and Warren Ballentine calling them racist. Obviously those in ignorance …. have no clue that African Americans would and do want to be considered AMERICANS. It is not, nor was it EVER our idea to be seperated by our color. This is outrageous. They were the only face of truth we had in Atlanta. I only listened to my radio because of them. WAOK has chopped up their lineup just as 102.5 has. I am religious but if I want to hear singing or a sermon I pop in a CD or Tape. I don’t need to listen to the radio for that. I have stopped listening to them. It is an effort to keep us blind and looking away from the real problems to pie in the sky.
Does anyone know who owns the station? I need their phone, fax, cell numbers and email address to paste it all over the internet and get a call/email campaign going. Can we hear Warren and Al on any other stations, if so can I have them. If anyone has any of the information that I have requested please email me at knox.angela@gmail.com put in the subject line: “Ballantine and Sharpton protest” so that I will not delete your email.

I think the radio show of Warren Ballentine and Al Chaplan was very inspirational and very important to the community of Atlanta, however, we want to be aware and awake of what is going around us,we certaintly don’t want to be entertains all time.
