Project Runway: Lipstick, bungled

The high: Watching Blayne and Daniel live to see another round. Those are two overly sensitive, well-meaning young designers. They looked crushed to not have Brooke Shields’ approval.

The low: Seeing clips of next week’s drag queen challenge. Can you say “stereotype”?

The lower low: Hearing Terri’s vulgar potty mouth.

A random thought on the “Project Runway” models: Does anyone really care about them? Every week Heidi makes a big production out of which model stays and which model goes, but I honestly can’t tell one from the other because I just don’t pay close attention.

One suggestion would be to skip the model portion (even though it’s only worth a few seconds of airtime) since the winning designer tends to stick with his/her same model anyway.

Moving on, then: “Cashmere Mafia” may have Patricia Field, but “Lipstick Jungle” needs Tim Gunn and gang to inject some pizazz into its costume design. Winner Keith was the designer that tapped into Wendy’s (played by Brooke Shields) fashion psyche. But I thought his feathery dress with convertible sleeves (right) was not fashion-forward, even though the judges (and Tim Gunn) clearly loved it. It looked old-fashioned; the high waist and loud print would not flatter 6-foot-tall Brooke Shields.

A better choice for Wendy, IMHO, would have been Korto’s sweet-potato ensemble, which needs a tall, broad-shouldered woman to carry it off. Plus, the color would have looked good with Shields’ chestnut hair.

On Tim Gunn’s blog, he remained dubious, but I thought it was unusual and very striking.

To make an apples-to-oranges comparison, in my head I recast Sarah Jessica Parker as “Lipstick Jungle’s” Wendy Healy and immediately dressed her in Jerell’s bias-cut dress. There’s no question there as to what TV’s fashion icon emeritus would have worn on her female-friends-in-New-York TV show.

Yeah, I am bummed about that dumb drag queen challenge. I feel sorry for whoever gets booted over that worthless “challenge”, as I did for the talented designer who lost the female wrestler challenge last season.

Once again, who cares!? Usually this blog has decent info so why waste space on this “stuff” is beyond me. Let it go.

I agree with the article and thought the dress was too high waisted to be truly flattering. I did like the movement that the “petals” gave to the skirt, though. In the end, it did feel old fashioned, while I thought Jerell’s garment was a better siloeutte (sp?).

I’m really wondering if the show is running out of fresh ideas, if they have to have a drag-queen challenge. The irony to the whole thing is bringing back Chris, whose tranny/costume sensibility the judges constantly trashed. Talk about a recipe for disaster. The winning outfit puzzled me, too, and I was bummed that Jerell’s bold but smart outfit didn’t win. I do like how Brooke Shields was a little more frank to the contestants’ faces than Sarah Jessica Parker, who clearly didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings last year. But more importantly: WTF on Kelli getting auf’d and not Blayne? As she pointed out to the judges, Kelli’s won a challenge, has never been on the low end of scoring, and what the heck has Blayne done? He’s Christian Siriano without the talent. (Ah, he’s good TV! Gotcha.) I had Kelli as one of top four to challenge for Bryant Park. Still, here’s to Stella finally getting her groove back!

I totally agree with you PR Fan,

I think “fake bake” or “no talent bore” should have been booted.

I did like Jerell’s dress better, seems like it would look better on Brooke…

If i were designing, I would have done a cream and brown zebra print flowy tank dress, with a cotton/santeen/silk safari style jacket in a dark rich khaki color…accented with a big burnt orange tote and killer pumps from the bluefly wall…lol..

I was terribly disappointed that Blayne did not go home. He can’t hold a candle to Christian in any way!! Yuk, he is disgusting. And I am SO over Stella…She should have gone home in week one. If the rain coat had lost the gloves it wouldn’t have been nearly as bad as Stella’s garbage bags!! I still love the show and I don’t think anyone should go home next week. It should just be for fun!!

Has anyone ever decided to ditch his/her model? I agree that that segment, though short, is useless.

I liked both of the top choices—I also would have picked Jerell/Stella’s, but the high-waisted thing was a beaut too, I thought. And I actually liked Stella. Go figure.

Can’t believe Kelli lost to those two twerps. Her design this week was whack, but shouldn’t she have gotten extra credit for having had Brooke choose her design as one of the top contenders at the beginning of the show? Or for not having a fake tan? Or for not being a whiney brat? I don’t get it.
