8/4: Spiff Carner joins True Oldies 106.7
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Spiff Carner, best known for his 14 years with the Randy & Spiff show on Fox 97, will be joining True Oldies 106.7 on Monday, August 11, with Freddie Brooks. He’ll be on from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays.
Carner has been rather peripatetic since Fox died in early 2003. He and Randy Cook went to True Oldies 105.7 for two years, followed by 18 months at Lite 94.9, then nine months or so at WGST-AM. This will be his fifth radio station in six years.
Management at GST, Carner said, wanted a more serious morning show so Spiff had to go. Meanwhile, the True Oldies general manager Paul O’Malley said hiring Spiff was a no brainer.
“It’s pretty simple math,” he said. “He’s a recognizable name in the market. There are two things we look for: ratings and revenue. He has the opportunity to bring in both. This has a chance to be a home run.”
Spiff is just glad to be able to talk to his fans again and get a regular paycheck.
“I’m happy to be part of True Oldies and I don’t have to move!” he said.
Asked how he got the job, he cracked: “They finally spotted me at the end of Barrett Parkway with my ‘Will tell jokes for food’ sign.”
He expressed interest in working at the station on this blog practically the day it launched back in early March. But management waited until the music mix and audience settled a bit before they committed to Spiff.
During his nine-month break, he said he spent a lot of time working on his photography skills, watching sports and taking long walks. “I lost 20 pounds!” he said.
Also, if you’re a Skip Caray fan, WSB-AM and Mark Arum are prepping a special commemorative show on his behalf tonight from 7 to 9 p.m.

A great big THANK YOU to TrueOldies 106.7 for coming to your senses and bringing Spiff back to the airwaves in Atlanta. Spiff’s web site,(www.spiffhappens.com), is also a great site for keeping us informed on what is happening in the world, well maybe not the world but at least keeps us of something. Welcome back to Atlanta radio, you we’re surely missed.

Bloomquist, you big idiot!! You hired Spiff Carner, then fired him!! Other than cleaning the toilets in the Building of Death, I have no idea why we keep you around. You are the Colonel Klink of Atlanta radio programming.

YES, YES, YES and a great big WOO HOO!!! Thank goodness someone finally came to their senses and got this man back on the radio. I love 106.7 and have all radio dials set there (except for the a.m’s, I don’t care for Don Imus or talk radio).
Now, go get Randy!!!!

Glad to hear that Spiff’s back on the air. Now if 106.7 wants to really please its potential audience, GET RID OF IMUS. He could offend and iritate anyone. I don’t listen when he’s there.
How ‘bout replacing him with Kelly & Alpha, the only good morning team in town and now the victims of the Steve and Icky revival.

great to have Spiff Back. Loved him and Randy on Fox. Imus can’t call a spade a spade any more unless he moves to a radio station that Jackson and Sharpton don’t listen to. It’s the old “Civil Rights” Act thing-blacks can say anything they want and offend but Whites have to get clearance and permission to use certain words.

YES YES YES!!! Please get rid of Imus NOW!!! According to the last ratings, Imus wasn’t doing any better than Rhubard and the country music format. And he was apparently let go BECAUSE OF RATINGS!!! Besides, NO ONE here cares about his mindless ramblings about what is happening in New York City!!!!

On May 4th, I got a Chinese fortune cookie with this fortune inside: “Remember three months from this date. Good things are in store for you.” I taped it to my calendar. Yesterday, I waited all day for something great to happen. Little did I know that it HAD, and I just didn’t know it. Congrats to Spiff and Atlanta oldies fans. This is excellent news!

Spiff - if he’s willing - can get his sidekick back ere much longer. It’s no secret in the B of D that Randy is sick of Randall. Of course, it’s no secret because so’s everybody else. Shhh, pass it on.

ADL, Rhubarb was let go because of money not just ratings. The opinion was the Eagle didn’t bring in enough money via advertising to offset salaries and music royalties. TrueOldies can have the same 12+ ratings and be more profitable by having more lucrative advertisers and lower programming costs. Now with that said, I miss Rhubarb terribly as his was the only morning show I listen to (I mostly listen to WSB-AM or the sports station in Gainesville now). I also think the risk on Imus is greater than the reward long-term but that’s just my opinion.

Way to go TrueOldies! You hit it out the of park! Spiff is a great addition and a genuinely nice guy, rare with the host of other egomaniac personalities on Atlanta radio. Others here are correct: show Imus the door; he’s a dithering old fool and I listen EXCEPT in the AM. Pay a local talent instead of lining that creep’s pockets. Good ideas of trying to snag Randy, and get someone for the AM drive like Kelly & Alpha, or McKee, all of whom are class acts, just keep it minimal talk. Something to ponder…

Message to Radio Fan: As a former CC employee at the Building of Death, I can tell that it’s a fact that Bloomquist and Deskins have no idea what they are doing. The people who post here using the Bloomquist or Deskins moniker are correct regarding their persona. Both are idiots.
And no, I was not cut from CC. I quit as I was disgusted in what those two idiots were doing to the entire CC cluster of stations in Atlanta.
To say that those two are qualified at their jobs is like calling a monkey qualified to do brain surgery. They have you fooled!

Oldies is referred to as “feel good music.” I believe this to be true. People have noticed this and that’s why it’s still alive today. I feel DJs adds to this feeling. I followed Spiff Carner and he is that important to me as well as the feeling we have for music and laughter. If I didn’t listen to 106.7 a lot, you can believe I will now. P.S. Need Randy too someday..maybe

Way to go Spiff!
Hey Bloomquist, you didn’t care what I had to say to you months ago about what a stupid thing it was for you to let Spiff go. (Your comment to me was “well you can’t please everybody”). I hope you are singing a different tune now. Don’t discount the listening audience, not even one person. Hope your resume is updated. Also, lose that pompousness, or you won’t stand a chance out there. People aren’t as dumb as you think they are. Whatever they are paying you at this point is too much!
Welcome back Spiff…..We all missed you! You are the king!

“If the Kimmer and Wayne and Davis and Hughes were soooo good, how come they haven’t been hired by any other station?”
Kimmer and Hughs retired. It’s hard to be hired when you aren’t looking. Wayne was at another station. He’ll probably land somewhere. Pete is a mystery. He’s an outstanding sports guy, in my mind, because he’s like one of us. He points out the obvious crap involved in a given story and isn’t afraid to do so. I miss the old 640 and I haven’t really listened since they left.

Great to have Spiff back spinning oldies again! And sooo great to have oldies playing in the ATL again finally. My advice…stick to 60’s music. That “NEW” River station has the 70’s covered (and they play the same songs over and over and…) TrueOldies please dump the Fleetwood Mac and Eagles. I want my 60’s Oldies!

Wow, I have thought about Randy and Spiff this whole past year.I know where Randy is, but I have been worried about Spiff. I have looked at his website to keep tabs on him. I am so happy I will hear him again. Those guys helped through the death of my mother, cancer, divorce and job disappointments. At one time I though I’d have to move where they landed. This has made my year.

Thanks for bringing Spiff back. Just keep playing some (new) oldies so the station doesn’t make the same mistake as 97.1. If you run low, I have 27,523 that you can borrow for nothing. Go get the Kimmer…even if it’s only for 1 day a week. We’ve been going through withdrawal. Where is “Bobby Gabore”? What a hoot. Monty in Marietta.
