7/31: What do you think of the spring radio ratings?

As I noted in this story, there’s been lots of action in radio land the past few months.

The key spring Arbitron ratings book just came out, numbers that stations use to set rates and sell ads. Among the new and returning shows, the Regular Guys (Rock 100.5) and Giant Brian (Project 9-6-1) pulled in really strong numbers while Cledus T. Judd (94.9/The Bull), the Morning Mess (Star 94) and Zakk Tyler (Dave FM) all showed some signs of life after miserable winter numbers.

People seem to have transitioned fine at Kicks 101.5 with Dallas joining Caddy. And Don Imus over at 106.7/True Oldies brought in comparable numbers to predecessor Rhubarb Jones.

Tell us what you think!

Well is anyone shocked that some thug show is number 1? What else would you expect in a thug filled city like Atlanta? My question is how do you listen to that crap when you can’t even understand the words they are saying? At least 680 The Fan beat 790 The Zone. 790 is by far the worst sports talk station in the country. Those thugs are awful!

Hopefully The Morning Mess is getting the message: They suck and everyone knows it. When you hang your hope for ratings on the whims of teenage boys and girls, you are asking for disaster. The fat guy on The Mess is a stooge, sent out to perform fat tricks and embarrass himself. Dave fm is the best morning show in a weak field.

Whether it be a “thug” show or “redneck” show they ALL are lame in my opinion. Both winning stations are racist against anyone who is different from them and they harp on that all the time. None of the stations play enough music. They all talk way too much and it’s normally very negative and I am tired of all of them. 97.5 The River plays the most music but they play the same music over and over and over again. Atlanta radio is the worst and to try and vote on who’s the best is a big joke. Get back to playing music, and stop being so negative!!!

I wake up to Dave FM everyday, they are #1 on my car preset and listen at work. Their morning show started out weak, but Zak Tyler grew on me. They are personable and have good subjects. They play music to get you going in the a.m. but not too hyper or too slow. Dave has a unique format all day. 2nd in line is 97.1 but they need a personality. The music is fab!

Definition of Thug (according to Merriam-Webster): A brutal ruffian or assassin.

So who exactly did the folks at V-103 rough up or assassinate?

I love how that term is always used when referring to a black person who is regarded in a negative way.

By Tetong

July 31, 2008 12:08 PM | Link to this

Who did these ratings? I don’t know a single person in my 15 years in this hole of city that listens to V-103. If the ratings were done by race I bet V-103 would be first in the black market because that is where they can get all their racist music and obama filled bs throughout the day. White guys listen to rock 100.5 and white girls listen to Q-100. Over 30’s white guys listen to 100.5 and the river. I think everyone is glad that 99X is gone now if we could only get V-103 to leave the planet and any of its sister channels. McCain ‘08!

By Need more data

July 31, 2008 12:18 PM | Link to this

Tetong is correct. It would be helpful (and more accurate) to see the ratings by race/ethnicity and gender (along with age).

Without these data the ratings are somewhat meaningless!!!

I am a avid listner of V-103 and the Steve Harvey Show and Im happy they are at the top. For all the people who are jealous that the “Thug” shows are higher rated than the “Cracker” shows, should relocate if they dont like it. or they could hook up a CB Radio to their car and listen to the Truckers.

Keith, A ‘thug’ show? Are you serious? Bored at work, huh? Just wanted to start some crap, huh? Girl didn’t give you any, huh? Can’t satisfy her, huh? LMAO.

I’m not partial to any one show. I listen depending on the topic to: Frank (Not a Sophia fan) Tom Steve A-Team (lame name for real) The Mess (they are funny sometimes) Yolanda (need a little inspiration)

However, I often find myself turning the radio off and simply having an interesting conversation with my 2-year-old.

Ummm… Why is this list only showing FM shows? Anyone with an IQ above 100 will turn on an AM show in the morning, regardless of their race, gender, or political views. I turned off FM radio at the age of 19 and have been listening to Boortz ever since then. But I’m sure at work, they’re all up in black folks face…the only thing white folks (some…I’m not ignorant) know how to do is paint ALL black people with the same brush. Otherwise, they would realize that there are ‘thugs’ in every race. It just makes them feel better…understand that. Sad for them…they will soon be getting only the short end of the stick…in case they haven’t been paying attention…spell MINORITY!!!

on a side note - the worst of the worst are: #1 John Kincaid of 680 the Fan. He can’t kiss and love himself enough. Take about pompous self loving people, he takes the cake. #2 - the Giant Brian show and #3 - The Regular Guys. Can that “yeah, come on” be any more stupid?

Radio: Atlanta’s not a “major city”? That said, any city can have bad radio and the all do. I’m just saying that if the lemmings keep supporting broadcast radio then you get what you ask for. I can’t imagine having to sit in my car and listen to that tripe. I would listen to the radio if they played any music, but they don’t. It’s nothing but a bunch of wind-bags spewing their drivel. There’s plenty of good music out there if you know where to find it. www.thepointfm.com is one of them. Best radio station I’ve ever listened to. Also, there’s www.wdvx.com which started in a trailer and has grown to a huge station based on the fact that they play music. www.pandora.com is a great internet based streaming music location where you can pick the types of music you want to listen to.

I equate broadcast radio with 8-track tapes. It’s a 19th century technology in a 21st century world. Just look at the music they do actually play and you can see that it’s aimed at a specific audience…that of people with very poor taste in music.

I’ll tell you why the Fish is losing ratings — they can’t figure out what kind of station they are. I listen off and on because I like Christian music. I also like a lot of other music, too. Last Sunday as we were leaving church, the Fish played Unwritten by Natasha Beddingfield — which is one of my favorite songs, but not Christian that I can tell — and their audience at that time would have been tons of families leaving church at noon. They need to decide if they’re Christian or not because that’s what most people are expecting from them. There’s lots of non-offensive easy pop/rock stations here and the Fish doesn’t need to add to that market.

HERE’S WHY RACE IS SO IMPORTANT TO RADIO RATINGS …

Most people don’t realize that blacks count as 1.3 (non-black) listeners for Arbitron ratings - accounting for much of V-103’s success, which has been skewed too high for the last 20+ years.

Arbitron believes that blacks don’t fill-out their radio ratings diaries with the same consistency as “whites” (sorry to simplify the racial terms - no offense meant, just used for explanation), so Arbitron “weighs” the diaries from blacks heavier than whites.

Remember this fact when you examine Atlanta’s radio ratings!

People who listen to Q100 must have an IQ of less than 90. The show is nothing but Jerry Springer for the ears. Jen H. is so fake with her entertainment reports…my dog could do better. Bert is a poser who pretends to be cool. Jeff is a moron who speaks down to people.

Their playlist (and Star 94s) is so generic. I have yet, for example, to hear Madonna’s new song, “Give It 2 Me.” (But, they will be all up her rear end when she comes to town.) Why do I have to hear “Take a Bow” five time in a two our span on one station (Q100)? Why are they scared to play music that is truly top 40 and not top 15???
