Why is it acceptable to have a show called “black men revealed.” but no show called “white men revealed?”

As 20 something black man, I’m curious to see how this turns out. It seems as though every entertaining talk-type show on TV aimed at my demographic revolves around profanity, being a ‘gangsta’, rims, and baggy why tees… all of which I could do without. ALL TV targets specific audiences: white men, black men, white women, under 40s, kids, teenagers, etc. So why feel the need to pull the “if this were titled ‘white __’ people would be p** line”. It gets us no where fast. I agree, some shows and organizations in this country promote divisiveness and hatred(black, white, and every other group). This doesn’t appear to fit in that category.

If you do not appreciate the Stews and do not listen to them why waste your valuable time to comment.

The day any of you get nine episodes on t.v. as well as a syndicated radio show then your comments will carry some weight.

A few observations / questions:

1) I listen to the Stews and like the banter, but talk about ‘sterotypes”. Strippers, clubs, not telling the police about a crime….. sometimes it sounds like they sell it (sterotypes) wholesale.

2) Mainly black TV shows……if the characters are sterotypes, why take the parts? Boycott the crap! Make them put on positive drama and dignified comedy (remember Cosby, Family Matters and The Parent Hood?)

What?? are you kidding me? You tell me what is wrong with this show and format. Also I am sure that a polish station, a Jewish station, Cuban, Dominican, or even an Asian based show exists for their community.

Look at the Bachelor, or the Bachelorette. Have you seen any Bachelors of any color besides white? That is why TV one exists. It deals with entertainment, and issues defined by but not to exclude any other race. You know this.

eljewell - it didn’t take one comment for the “racism” to start. It was there in the article, which was the gentleman’s (or lady’s) point.

I don’t listen to the radio show, but if the hosts are going to take the LIBERTY of using a name like “Black Men Revealed”, I hope they take the RESPONSIBILITY that goes with it, illustrating true strength in heart, mind, body and soul of a black man.

Follow that course and maybe the show will eventually elevate itself to stand on the content of its characters’ characters, and earn the right to simply call it “Revealed”.

I listent to the Stews… They’re entertaining. I don’t agree with a lot of what they say and do, and many times they go “over the top” so to speak, but overall, you have to take them in perspective…. They talk a lot about nonsense, and very little sports… I use them for background noise while I work, and every now and again, I hear some real sports talk news…

Not really sure about the show. I mean, people complain about “Black Men Revealed” and why is it “Black”?! I mean, this show will be on TVONE, and breakoff from BET… There’s TELEMUNDO (I think that’s how you say/spell it), JEWISH Television, I’m sure there’s an Asian station somewhere out there… Being a minority in this country has some “allowables”… The 100 Black Men of Atlanta, NAACP, and others were created SOLELY because the groups and clubs that were already established (by whites) excluded minoriites… So basically, this TVONE, BET, 100BlackMen, EBONY, JET, “Black Churches in America”, Black-only Neighborhoods, “China Towns in the USA”, overall separation and “exclusionism” is a direct cause of the sins and transgressions of white predecessors exluding minorities… You can’t fault minorities from coming together especially when for so long, they were excluded from everything so what would anyone do in that situation? If you weren’t picked to play in the neighborhood baseball team, you’d do what? Form your own team… It’s as simple as that. Exlusionism was and historically is created by those who are in “power”… Look at the obvious “cast systems” in Indio, South Africa, USA, Mexico… I know Latinos who will slash your throat if you call them “Mexicans” and they are from some other Latin country… It’s insensitive to just call all Latinos “Mexican” and lump them all together, but you get what I’m saying… There’s a cast system amongst Latinos basically, “Mexicans” are lowest on the scale…

Black Men Revealed/White Men Revealed, It’s REALLY doesn’t matter. Personally I have listened to the Stew’s since 2002. If you are not Stewin You Don’t Know What The Hell They Are Doin (If you ain’t Stewin, what in the hell are you doin)! So if you don’t know about them get to (790thezone, 2livestews.net). What really needs to be looked at is why the need to talk about Saving Grace and The Closer during this article. Don’t hate because the second comment by Don Imus wasn’t criticized like this by anyone. The Stew’s have a very successful show for all race’s and everyone is considered a dog when you call the show. In other words you are “down with the 2 live Stews”! Listen to the show people and watch the program….you just may learn something.

The Stews actually have the best radio show on 790. They are the main reason the station keeps flipping the line up. If they put any one of them dry personalities on during 1-4 no one would tune in. The morning show doesn’t count, those ratings are are easy to get.

People will always have something negative to say, even when you’re doin something positive.

Chicago POW, if you listen to their show, you see two guys that entertain and are very interested in giving back to their community. Why not have dialog on the plight of black men. CNN is having a big two day series of Being Black in America. If this is there way of giving back, and TV one will give the forum to do it then what is the problem?

BTW I am a listener of these guys since 03, met them on location several times, and can tell you that they are two of the most don to earth guys you would ever meet. They give a different perspective to sports talk that I love and many respect. When your star power can take you top the level they have achieved it is almost right that they have a forum of this type. It just might bring in people that would turn away from these type of issues.

Now the racism, go to any message board or blog, and see for yourself why anything black is disgusting by some of these people. Hence my first response.

You absolutely can fault any group who does not do unto others as they would have done unto them - black, white, Latino, Asian or Jewish. You can’t fight exclusivity with exclusivity unless your goal is perpetuating socio-economic segregation.

You can use “that’s the way it’s always been” as a justification for exclusivity, but I’d rather live in a world where friendships and memberships are made using a higher standard than skin color.

When they man up and explain that, then and only then, can they say they are really “keepin’ it real.”

It appears that the people on here complaining about why minorities have their own outlets are upset that they are not included in outlets directed at them. Why does it matter if African Americans, Hispanics, Jews, Native American,or any other minority group have their own tv shows or social organizations? Do you feel left out? Do you think you are missing any opportunities for your advancement in this society? How do these entities affect you? Unlike groups like the KKK, Skinheads, Aryan Nation, which seek to hurt others who are not like them, minoritity groups like NAACP,100 Black Men, Anti-Defamantion League La Raza and others seek to improve the conditions of people like them and not at the expense of others. None of the organizations take money from you personally to advance their cause so again why does it bother you so much. This country is large enough and diverse enough for every one to have their own niche in this melting pot we call America. Grow up and realize this is not slap in your face but rather a hand up for others. As far as the 2 Stews are concerned,they are just a small drop in the large pond of sports talk show hosts. If I am not mistaken they are the only minority syndicated sports talk show hosts in the country. They are not a threat to white sports talk show host. They give a different perspective on sport contrary to the mainstream and now they are doing something wrong. All radio sports talk shows talk about everything other than sports. So they are not doing anything different other than their delivery. We need to wake up America.

Not a racist….I just wonder when we all can drop the color labels so we can dialogue about “men” and “women” and “people” as all inclusive while discussing issues like morals, integrity, ethics, heart, etc. When exactly can all of us expect to leave the color label off and quit using it as an excuse. Fact is red, white, blue, black, yellow, and green…there are good people and jerks of all colors. I’m white and I’m just as tired of the white elitist as I am of the race card played by black Americans. Men should be judged, allowed, promoted, accepted, and loved as men. I do think the black this, black that group stuff does nothing but get in the way. I have friends of all colors, from all walks of life, from all socio-economic situations, and its amazing how we never mention color. Just “he’s a good guy, he’s a jerk” based on qualities, not wrapping paper. Time we get over it! Can I not watch BET because it’s not intended for me? How about we start the 100 Men, period, and reserve it for role models for all? Time for all to lose the labels. A man rises to the level of his incompetency socially, financially, spiritually and otherwise based on his fabric. It’s called the Peter Principle and it is a scientific fact. Those that choose to hang a color label on themselves or their group only compound racial stereotypes and create barriers for themselves. By the way, my lab puppy is black and he only responds to how he is treated and treats others.

But they do harbor some very anti-white sentiments and sometimes don’t do a good job of hiding it.

*2LiveStews4Real? * If someone chooses to rent-to-own furniture, then that’s okay with me. How is that exploitation? Yes, the furniture is overpriced, but have you seen the interest rates on retailer credit cards? It all equals out. My community is not being exploited. I can assure you that many whites rent furniture too! It’s about economics, not race!

Secondly, these are two men trying to make a difference. I commend them for their efforts. I cannot begin to understand some white people’s frustration at Blacks feeling pride for themselves. We were excluded from so much, and we still have exclusion today. If you want to have a “white” pride organization, please do so. Forget Jesse and Al. They don’t represent me anyway. I can speak for myself. And I can’t think of anyone in my age group or younger that feels differently. We see them for what they are.

Additionally, TV One is one TV station. Personally, I get sick and tired of turning on the TV and seeing only white people. Rarely do I see images of myself. Even in commercials, the black actors aren’t really Black, they’re mixed. They have to have light skin and curly hair. This is why I rarely watch TV, but instead spend my time reading. I don’t define beauty based on the white man’s standards. Please get your heads out of the sand.

You know what, it burns me that most of you white men have the gall to question the title of this show. You guys have to have everything and when you feel like your excluded you quickly shout reverse racism. Please understand nearly everything is catered to white’s, movies, most talk shows, television shows, most radio, school systems, gov’nt, laws, fashion, etc. WHY, WHY, WHY do you have to have everything. The reason is because you’re selfish and envyous. The bad thing is that our shows do not excluded you they just give black mans perspective. You could probably learn something from it. When you all have so many things that are formed and operated with only white people in mind. And even though these things may not be labeled “white” you know that they have no real intentions of catering to blacks. Why does it make you so (SICK-OF-IT) when blacks developed shows with mainly us in mind. I’ll tell you why because you just have to have everything like whining babies. As a white male I am an avid listener of the the Stews when in the area. I m 41 and don t find their show offensive and wish everyone could become less sensitive to these issues but it will never happen until JESUS comes. All races are guilty of racism.

Just because others buy Rent to Own, doesn’t mean that Rent to Owns, Payday Loans and the like don’t target the black community. And yes, ultimately it’s the consumer who makes the choice; but still you’re talking about $300.00 televisions that can cost well over $1500.00 under Rent to Own.

If that’s not exploitative, I don’t know what is, and I would think the Stews have enough pull in the industry by now that if they wanted to “keep it real” they could seek other sponsorship.

That tells me ultimately that “keepin’ it real” is just a shtick , albiet it one that pays well, but nothing of any social relevance. Kinda like the Olsen twins.

For goodness sake, there are so many junky/trashy shows on television regardless of the color and perspectives of the host… There are very few shows on television now that are insightful and/or well put together. It’s a simply a thing called choice people.

Everybody stop being so sensitive and if you like them…tune in… If you don’t like them…find something else to watch/listen…

If I remember, I may turn to the show on 7/20, check it out, if I like it, I’ll watch it. If I don’t like it, I’ll change the channel…

Is it truly necessary to reveal color when presenting a TV show? We all have color TV’s and will know the race of the individuals when the show comes on. I do agree with Dave and the need to leave color out of titles and conversation. To continue to point out race will only allow racism to carry on. It appears all sides have good points but when color is mentioned you separate others. The very same reason others defend the name of this show, exclusion from past and present. When does it stop? Who will be the bigger person?

If we all were blind would there be a need to say Blind Men Revealed.

What is all the fuss about. Look, the Stews do cater to the black audience. That’s why I don’t listen. They can not be fair and objective to anything. That’s what they feel they need to do. So, I understand they’re thinking and they are becoming very rich off of it but you have to admit, they are not helping with the race problem in America. They only get the “brothas” more fired up against white people.

I took my two daughters to the park last week and they started playing with a little black girl. Her father immediatley pulled her away from my daughters and said she could not play with them because my daughetrs are white. Really nice…..So, you see it goes both ways. The Stews are no different than any white groups that cater to white people. Until both sides are ready to work together, racism will never end.

This is off topic but,I don’t listen to the show because of the content. I don’t find it racist or offensive, I just don’t get their humor nor find the topics all that interesting personally. As a matter of fact, all Atlanta talk radio I have listened to isn’t very good. Politically I like Herman Cain. He has a common sense approach. As for sports talk, I like The Afternoon Saloon.

Actually, I think that white men revealed, latino men revealed, and asian men revealed should all be subsequent shows. These shows could help dispell some of the myths we have about each other. They could also explain some of the cultural perspectives.

From my perspective the title narrows the message down to a certain group of people. For example, if the show was called Asian Men Reveal, I would not be offended. Would we still have these dialogs?

All of you who complain about the lack of a “White Men Revealed”, I challenge YOU to be a difference maker rather than a whiner. Why don’t you present your request to TVOne???

Write a letter, tell them how you think it would be beneficial to be able to draw contrasts between the perspectives of men of different racial/ethnic groups. Sit amongst a group of intelligent Black men in a forum and have and open, honest dialog about perceptions, realities, family, our roles and responsibilities to society, cross interacial interaction etc.

I’m sure you don’t really want to do that though now do you? You just want to have a reason to stir up racial tension.

WELL, “if you do not like the show then turn the channel silly boy or girl”. it’s interesting to see a show that discusses the good and bad perspectives on the lives of blk men. in the past most programs dealt with the negative. for example,a popular blk man from a poor background does well but trips up on too much money, women and/or drugs then returns to the hood pennyless, disgraced to become a “has been”. this show should enlighten people to the fact that most blk professional ballers about 95% or more do well at the end of their careers. also, most blk professionals go on to help others. so, do not be a hater or be jealous. these men are not perfect but they serve a purpose to enlighten!!!

The show, nor it’s title, doesn’t appear “separatist” or “racist”. Nor is the show aimed at only Black or African-American people. The title isn’t “Black Men Revealed TO BLACKS ONLY”!! The show is designed to present the perspective on issues from a Black Man’s perspective only. Just as TVOne was created to air shows, news, issues, & entertainment from a Black perspective…..not JUST for Blacks. Why would a Black man need to reveal himself to another Black man anyway? (no jokes please, lol) That’s stupid! The show, nor it’s title, was created by them. I applaud them for doing a show aimed at presenting the perspective of positive side of men of the African-American men. It’s a demographic often ignored & misrepresented in the media.

Maybe if you all stop waiting with baited breath on every opportunity to spout the racist and separatist venom everytime the AJC posts a story, whether black or white, then maybe we will grow as a collective people…..ALL races.

For all the people that THINK that it’s a racist show, why not wait & tune in & learn something. THEN post your comments.

Wow wee all this over the title of a show. If I’m not mistaken TV One has had a variety of programming with the words African American or Black in its title. It is programming targeted for an African American audience after all!!! I happen to like the Stews. The show content is entertaining and holds my attention. My husband loves their show and while listening I have learned so much about sports. This has given me and my husband a stronger bond ESPECIALLY DURING FOOTBALL SEASON. HE CAN REALLY TALK TO ME ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON AND I REALLY UNDERSTAND THANK YOU DOUG AND RYAN!!!! I think a person who is not a “sports fan” can listen and enjoy the show as much as a sports fanatic. This is the unique draw of the show. Hey the Stews are syndicated now. I see them on other sports shows and hear them on other syndicated radio shows. Somebody is listening! I predicate will we see these two for years and years to come. If no one is criticizing you - you probably are not doing much of anything And I’m gone.

I actually kinda liked Saving Grace the few shows I got to see. I liked Touched By An Angel. Saving Grace is a quite a bit different from that but I found it a likable show. I haven’t really watched anything since Alias went off the air.

You wonder why everything is made for white people? It’s because they are the majority in this country. Black people make up 12% of the population, that is nothing. Whites and Hispanics are the majority in this country, not blacks. White people also have more money on average and a higher education level than blacks on average, hence why you see more products marketed to them. They have more money to spend on crap.

Wow…it’s getting pretty rough in here.

I’ve listened many times to their show and it’s really NOT a sports talk show. They talk about sports sparingly and when they do, it’s very obvious they are extremely ill-informed.

That said, they are an entertainment show that is doing very well with the black demographic. 790 is smart enough to promote them and let their success grow.

As far as race is concerned, uh, let’s just say that they constantly make racial comments on there. Argue if you want but it’s there a lot. Daily.

The most unfortunate thing is we are far too preoccupied with identifying people by their group and not as individuals. As far as the outcry over a “black” show it comes down to simple economics and business. There is a market to cater to. If it doesnt get ratings its gone off the air. Its all about capitalism. Face it, black people make up about 13% of the population thats why you dont see as many black faces on tv. Its an untapped market. For those who object, just turn the channel or dont surf by it. Unfortunately we are at least a generation away from ceasing the polarization of race. Its starting to happen a bit now, but as the old guard dies off new perspectives will emerge and the group mentality will fall by the wayside……hopefully
