6/3: Hugh Jarrett obit, satellite radio, response to Dagmar story

Hugh jarrett.jpg

Hugh “Baby” Jarrett, a former member of the Jordinaires backing up for Elvis and a long-time radio DJ in Atlanta, died a few days ago from complications related to a March car accident, and we wrote an obituary that was in today’s print edition.

He is ensconced in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Georgia Music Hall of Fame and Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. Radio disc jockey was right there on his résumé with singer and actor. His on-air persona was “Big Hugh Baby,” and the AJC described him as “one of the brassiest disc jockeys ever to grace Atlanta’s airwaves.” Most recently he was on WWVE Victory 91.5, a Christian radio station.

-XM and Sirius, awaiting federal clearance of a merger of the two satellite radio companies, are struggling a bit financially as their ramp-up of subscribers have slowed down. Sarah McBride of the Wall Street Journal provides a snapshot.

The nation’s only two satellite services are growing slower than previously while the broader economy is in a slowdown. Fewer people have been buying new cars, which is where the companies derive the bulk of new subscribers. And as higher fuel and food costs take their toll, analysts worry consumers will quickly ditch discretionary services such as satellite radio.

-I just had a friendly conversation with Bob Berlon, who sent this letter to the editor about the Dagmar Midcap story I wrote a few days back. Here it is:

The article about Dagmar Midcap takes us back 30 years. In any current responsible organization, the author of this article would be charged with sexual harassment. Stating she is attractive, professional, competent, and intelligent or even “ a soothing voice, a pretty face and a warm personality” would be perfectly appropriate; however, this wouldn’t get coverage. References to “a hint of cleavage” and “the tight sweaters” if posted on a company bulletin board would get immediate attention from the human resources attorney. In spite of Midcap’s assurance that she is “used to the locker room stuff” doesn’t give the newspaper the right to objectify anyone. We are not prudish; we simply believe that she deserves better treatment.

Until I read the article in the paper I thought Dagmar Midcap was some kind of mutual fund.

Just an idea, Rodney, but maybe the Regular Guys shouldn’t always be your go-to people for color commentary.

Gimme a break!!!! What are the tight sweaters and the ‘hint of cleavage’ all about? She’s the one wearing the stuff. Is the author suppose to ignore the obvious reason why Dagmar is so popular? Yes, she’s a nice girl and yes, she does a commendable job as a weather reporter BUT…even in this age of feminism and equality..it would take a blind woman not to see the reason for her popularity.

Bob & Lynn-

It is folks like you …who worry about meaningless dribble like the “assault” on Dagmar Midcap when you could be investing your brains and time on something relevant and important like volunteering time with disabled veterans, volunteering for the USO, or contributing in someway to the greater good of society. I think Dagmar can take care of herself…

Think about that the next time you come to the “defense” of a “poor” soul like Ms Midcap.

What’s with all the double- and triple-posters? Itchy trigger finger?

Bob & Lynn…chill out. If you want to have a conniption fit, why not talk to the station that ditched a meterologist for a pretty face? I mean, if ANYONE is trading in that old-school objectification of women. Rodney is just reporting on it.

Oh, and Bob…does Lynn lead you around on a chain? Just how whipped are you, sir?

Dagmar has bikini pictures all over the internet. That’s not exactly “professional” either.

As a journalist, Rodney wrote an article explaining why Dagmar is so popular. Is it true that she wears tight sweaters? YES! Is it true that she doesn’t have a small chest? YES! I could understand if Rodney’s article was straight porn, but it isn’t. He wrote a factual piece. Come on, people. Grow up…..

“doesn’t give the newspaper the right to objectify anyone”

She is allowing herself to be objectify because she’s after the big bucks like the rest of us. I wouldn’t be surprise if she gets a gig on Spike TV or G4.

IMHO, I like the nickname of Dags.

I’m thinking that Bob Berlon is so uptight that he is turning a lump of coal into a diamond even as we read this blog. Most TV talking heads, both male and female, are hired in large measure for their physical attractiveness.

Even Dagmar can’t hold a candle to Ms. Melissa Theuriau…the clip works even better if you don’t understand French…
