5/26: Cracks in the Oprah empire
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The New York Times wrote a piece Monday about Oprah Winfrey’s empire showing some signs of weakness..
Her TV show lost 7 percent of its ratings year over year. Circulation of her magazine is down 10 percent over the past three years. And “Oprah’s Big Give” didn’t do nearly as well as ABC had expected and she chose not to do another installment.
The story speculated that her endorsement of Barack Obama turned off her more conservative viewers and Hillary Clinton fans. (She has virtually stopped actively campaigning for him, though.)
Daily ratings for her talks how was 7.3 million, down from 7.8 million a year ago. Her show peaked at about 9 million in 2004-05. It’s still by far the No. 1 talk show and has been for more than 9 years.
Locally, her ratings in May 2008 were down an alarming 30 percent to 125,000 or so households from nearly 180,000. (Then again, “Dr. Phil” is down 30 percent in Atlanta, too, as is “Ellen.”)
What’s your take on Oprah? Tired of her? Still worship her?

She has an annual salary of $260 Million and a personal net worth of $2.5 Billion. Somehow, I think she’ll find the courage to carry on.

Oprah is way over exposed. Folks were getting sick of her before her Obama obsession. Now the steady beat of her closet Lesbianism. Her harsh treatment of her employees. Studio audience buying. There are more important things going on in America than Oprahism, she just doesn’t know realise it yet. Your gig is just about up. See Ya Oprah, won’t miss ya!

Windy , stop hating on Oprah. Do u really think Oprah would hide it, if she were lesbian? Mind your business, read a book and better yet stop wishing for her down-fall. You’d do better praying that Osama is found. Neither will happen.

Her time is up. For one, she speaks all this pseudo-spiritual gobbledygook that doesn’t resonate with her audience anymore. Instead of book of the month, she should start “religion of the month”. That and the fact the woman has more money than God, and yet is not giving it away like she preaches to everyone else. After all these years, she is still fat and unhappy. Her empire has done nothing for her. Her audience is disconnected with her and most of them are showing up just trying to get some Oprah welfare un their chair.

You are right Harpo. She spoke of the sisterhood for all of these years, pandering to women about our rights and how to empower ourselves only to fall for a pretty face with no substance and join the sista hood and dump women for Obama. She needs to take herself back to a God fearing christian church and leave all of this crap she is spewing on her web site behind.

I think her time has come and gone. She made a dreadful mistake going out and “preaching” Obama the way she did. No other TV personality has ever done that. It was obvious she did it because he is black. She even sent her people over to redo Michelle’s black hair and make it look more white like hers. Oprah, we don’t need anymore. She thinks she’s god-like and has all the answers. Her estate in Calif. is a monument to her wealth. Go away Oprah!

She did a great deal of good initially, then she became full of herself and turned on the whites who had put her where she is today. I’m sick of racist white or black.

I still like her and respect her for some of the shows she’s done (plight of women in Africa; puppy mills) but am having a tougher time when she spends so much time talking about going green. She probably lives in a 50K square foot house, drives in a limo all the time and probably has a carbon footprint the size of Atlanta.

OH, shut up! She has the right to endorse whomever she chooses. I am assuming by your comments that it would have been ok to endorse Hillary because she is a woman but not ok to endorse Obama because is black. Get a life! He is bi-racial. Oprah is an intelligent woman, obviously something Obama said that she agreed with. As one blogger stated, I’m sure she will go on. Judge your own life before you judge others.. When was the last time you all did something for someone else just because? Go out and volunteer or plant a tree.

She has done good things with her money, but I agree that it isn’t enough. I’m not hating on Oprah but I really think that her ego has taken over all that she does. I was watching her show yesterday about kids who had been sent to different countries to assist the poor. They all had shirts on with a big “O” plastered on the front, and they were called “O Ambasador.” Again, she funded the trips but why does her name have to be on everything she does? I believe the way she treats her employees is a travesty. That having been said, I guess I would trip if I had that much money in the bank. It’s not because I think it’s the right way to be, but because I’m human. Also, if she does fall, it won’t be a hard one. After all, she has a 2 billion dollar account to fall back on.

I’ve never watched Oprah, except for maybe a total of one hour over the years — I’m at work when she’s on, and she’s just not a factor in my life. I have almost uniformly loathed her “Oprah’s Book Club” selections, finding most of them dark and depressing — odd, that, given what a positive person she seems to be in all the other areas of her life. It got to the point where if it had an “OBC” sticker on the front of the book, I avoided it!
I respect her for her accomplishments — but her politcal opinions (and the opinions of other celebrities) has NO influence on my political views. And while any celebrity is entitled to their own political views, I’ve always been exasperated that there is a sub-set of people in the world for whom a particular celebrity’s political opinion takes the place of thoughtful evaluation and judgement. Augh!
It’s hard to stay at the top of your game for years and years and years, and keep fresh. She’s had a good run, and I think there’s still a place for her, but basically, she’s irrelevant in my life. I long ago grew tired of her weight struggles — I have my own to deal with and hearing about her failures and struggles with her weight, even with personal cooks and trainers, is depressing.

When people become too successful, too rich, they find it hard to keep their humility. But this is in part the fault on her fans who have worshiped her every word,or advice as their Goddess. She is only human. However she should know better not to endorse any candidate publicly.

I still love Oprah. That doesn’t mean that I subscribe to all of her thinking, ideology. Listen, folks, you can’t have that much money and that many yes people and not go off the deep-end now and again. I think she tries to stay grounded, but it’s virtually impossible not to expect everyone around you to worship at your feet. So, take each show on its individual merit and decide for yourself it you love or hate the messenger. I couldn’t even begin to read the Eckart Tolle (sp) book, because I already know all that stuff. But I respect her for putting it out there for younger people. I wouldn’t do a class on the book, but she has creative license here. When y’all get your own show, do your own topics. Also, on Obama, he’s her senator in Illinois. So, she probably has more in common with him because the legislation he has worked on has benefitted her and other folks from that state. And yeah, he’s bi-racial. Just as white as he is black. The problem with society regarding bi-racial people is that society often makes these people choose one race over the other to identify with. He was raised by his white mother and grandmother. So, he can’t possibly be all pro-black. And neither can Oprah, since the overwhelming majority of her audience is white. Go smoke that over.

If anyone remembers, Oprah built her kingdom first on “sensational” TV. Then found “gods” and then made herself over a spiritual advisor to the world. She keeps one toe in Christianity, but most of her other beliefs are far from it. Deep down inside, Oprah is unhappy. Spirituality, money, fame, weight-loss, et. has not fulfilled her life. She is constantly searching for something to fill a void in her life. This is one thing that her audience is tireing of. The other is the disconnect with her being a kabillionaire. She goes to Africa and starts up an ultra-privileged school fro girls that has a beauty salon in it? Please. Anyone one who has been to Afria knows, that that is not what they need. She could have taken that money and divided it into many schools for boys and girls that would have done soo much more. That school was built for Oprah. To make her feel good.

Oprah’s decline is due to many things. Despite her doing MANY great things, I feel Oprah 1) has become a PRAISE-HOG. She has become very self-important and thinks that she is above others. That Hermes incident is just one example; there are many. 2) She feels she is god-like and everyone should do what SHE wants; she thinks she is a sage. Her “And I BELIEVE” is just a way for her to make you think that you should believe the same as she. 3) I feel Oprah and Gayle are in the closet and are homosexuals. NO real woman hangs with another woman that much. Come out; stop playing folks. Get real, people! Stedman’s answer on Larry King about O & G was very telling: “I don’t focus on it.” 4) Oprah does NOT give voice or visibility to other Black people—especially not other brown-skinned Black women. I feel she wants to be seen as “the only ‘good’ Black woman in America,” (especially ‘brown-skinned’ Black woman). As a Black woman, she KNOWS how hard we have it in this country. But it has only been a RARE day when she has touted or shown some product of a Black woman (though she often does it for Whites), and the only Black women she has on her show are either already in the media/celebs, are light-skinned or are people she knows. Rarely does she divert from that. And now 5) many of her White followers have shown their true colors and turned on her because they feel her Obama endorsement is race-based. Even with that, she may have a private wish of trying to see if she has that much power to even influence everyone and “change a nation.” She is solely seeking ultimate power. She has so many people snowed.
Personally, I wish people—especially Black women—would STOP feeling that Oprah is your savior. STOP needing her to tell you what books to read, what good work to do, etc. Get your own life. Think for yourself. Pick your own books, etc. Oprah is NOT going to HELP you, sister. She is out ONLY for the shine on HER name. Her motives are not as pure as many of you think. She is a celebrity, a person who loves the light on her, and she has great producers. Don’t ever forget that. And she does NOT support her own. Yes, she gives her money to causes, but again, that is for another jewel in HER crown. She does NOT let the light shine on the rest of us, esp. Black women.
I was SO READY for her to go away in 2011, but now she’s going to start her OWN network. Again, great success, but her motives are suspect. She seeks Praise and Power. And no, I do not watch her show anymore; haven’t for years, since 2003.
Remember: “Power corrupts; and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Her private life is her business, not yours, good grief, give it a rest, find your own business. I will watch her show as long as it is on! I will buy her O magazine whenever I can afford to, and will pray her strenght against HATERS LIKE YOU!

Well said “Voice of Reason”
I am so tired of the “Gospel According to Oprah” - oooh if Oprah says it is must be good.
The Big Give was nice - but really did she put up the $$$$$ out of her pocket or was it the sponsors of the show?
People like that who have to have full media coverage everytime they give $$$$$ are just publicity hogs. Oprah go back to the Bible and read the story of the “widow’s mite”
And Oprah nobody cares about Tom Cruise…
The ride is over Oprah - you had your moment - made your money so once and for all just be like Michael Jordan and retire. You won’t be forgotten - let someone else have a turn!

The “kiss of death” for Oprah was her political stumping for Obama.
Entertainers (actors, personalities, musicicians, etc.) need to stop endorsing political figures - PERIOD. All of them should have learned from the Dixie Chick fiasco. Americans don’t like their entertainment politics to mix.
Everytime an actor or musicisian utters a word about their political leanings, wheather I SUPPORT that candidate/issue or not, it automatically makes me dislike that entertainer!!! I refuse to line their pockets with more money - a personal boycott if you will.
I think Ellen DeGeneres does the best job of ANY entertainer out there - she knows the boundries although she slips at times. Rosie O’Donnell, on the other hand is horrible at keeping her mouth shut! Watch out Oprah - if your not careful you could be headed in the latter direction!!!
Take control of YOUR show - your Nate Berkus decorating segements, Suze Orman / Jean Chatsky money shows (regarding the deep personal debt of our citizens), etc are what people want to see…

I don’t understand why some people keep thinking this is about “Obama” or “race”. I’m white. I don’t care. I see Oprah as a woman. Not a black woman. Not a “Shade” of a black woman. I didn’t care for her endorsement of Obama, but I don’t think that is knocking her ratings. She is getting long in the tooth for one, and isn’t delivering her spiritual goods. Most people like a celebrity because of a feeling of mutual ideas or core beliefs. Sometimes it is because that said celebrity could be the kind of person you could sit down and have a cup of coffee with. A sense of believability. That is where she has her “disconnect”. The only people who could sit down with her and have coffee is Tom Cruise or such. Not her audience. That is how she connected in the beginning, by being one of “us” so to speak.

A part of becoming rich and famous on the dollars of common folks is knowing one day they will turn on you. Here we go. Oprah didn’t need you, you needed Oprah and that’s why you elevated her above yourself. You do the same thing with your preacher, who has no more need to be elevated than Oprah did.
Most will jump off Oprah’s train only to jump on someone else’s. This is what happens to folks with low self esteem. Quit trying to rip her apart and spend more time trying to heal yourself. It was you that gave her the power, and your money, anyway.
She’s had a long and prosperous run and has exposed many people to things they may never have encountered. In that sense she was successful. That’s her job, to get you thinking and seeing other alternatives.
If you wanted the same old thing you could have just kept going to your same church and hanging out with your old friends. You were looking for her to fill a hole in your life and she did. Now that the love affair is over be gracious knowing that she carried you for years and you didn’t have to deal with your own pathetic selves.
The sad part is now you’ll go back and bring down your old congregations with your low self esteem and “never happy” selves.
I speak for “O” when I say good bye.

Nobody has mentioned that her show just isn’t as good as it used to be. She’s chopped it up into smaller segments and will have multiple (and sometimes even unrelated) topics in one one-hour episode. Also, she talkes to celebrities/authors pushing movies/books entirely too much. It feels like an advertisement a lot of the time. And all of it carries with it a message that I have a problem and Oprah has the solution… I doubt that.
Long ago, her show would be an hour-long study of a topic…sometimes hard-hitting and sometimes lightweight. It would be on cooking or alcohol abuse or fashion trends for spring or an event in the news. (Remember Baby Jessica in the well?) And most of her guests were REGULAR PEOPLE. Remember the lady whose son died and she could still remember his “puppy dog smell?” This was why we watched it. We wanted to see people like us who had been through something extraordinary and lived to tell about it. We learned little lessons from THEM, not Oprah or her experts, necessarily. I quit watching a couple years ago when it seemed like every episode was some love-fest between her and John Travolta or Halle Berry or Holly Robinson-Pete. Most of us aren’t as star-sticken as O’s producers think we are. It gets boring watching them. The only celeb story that was really moving to me was the episode where she featured Tracey Gold after her drunk-driving incident. That was eye-opening to me. And that episode wasn’t at all about her career. She came across as “any-mom” and I really felt for her.
I’m rambling. Nutshell: politics aside, her show’s just not as good as it used to be.

This is rediculous. First of all, who cares if her shows lose a few points? She has a gazillion dollars and can retire anytime she wants to. Secondly, she is not gay. She said herself if she were she would tell you. For God’s sake, the woman confessed to using drugs early in her career. Do you think she would lie about being gay! Being gay is nothing if you’re rich. It would open up a whole new audience for her.
Finally, stop being jealous of her money. She earned it and she can do whatever she wants with it. She gives a lot to charity and builds schools in Africa. What else do you want her to do? We have televange- lists worht tens of millions of dollars that are bilking little old ladies out of their social security checks. That’s who you should be talking about. Oprah has no children. It wouldn’t surprise me if shen she dies the bulk of her estate will go to charity. Give it a rest.

My mother once told me when I brought home a friend from school who was considered quite the ‘undesirable’ that at least he wasn’t of the colored persuasion …whatever that meant. I don’t know what I said that would cause you to cast that off as liberalism but I know that is your way of trying to take the focus off the issue. That is what people do when they are in a corner and have been called out! Change your heart towards people that are not like you!! Accept that we live in a free society and that while you can watch whatever program it is that you choose, you should be more of a human being by not hating the host simply because they support a black candidate or they are just black period. Stop finding excuses to hate. In the end, it is all just an excuse. You will not win. Get over yourself.

Oprah made her vast fortune from the pockets of wealthy white women. It was not the black community that made Oprah a rich woman. Look at her television audience and you’ll see who her strongest supporters are, they’re higher than average wage earners who happen to be white and female. I think many were disappointed she jumped on the Obama bandwagon as quickly as she did. Naturally, it was all race based, as most of Obama’s support within the black community is, which is fine, just own it and don’t deny you’re voting for him bcause of his race. All celebrities come and go, their star begins to fade. It’s time hers does as well, it’s bound to happen. She will still be a very wealthy and somewhat powerful woman, albeit not the same power she once held but still powerful. With her ego I think being number two or three will be a slap in the face to her but this is something she’ll have to deal with as her star fades and another person steps in to fill her shoes, she’ll do okay. Calm down Hillary, it’s not all that important in light of what’s going on in the world about how people feel about Oprah. At the end of the days, she is the last thing on peoples minds as most celebrities are. They can all be on top and then lower than a whale turd the next day, ask Michael Jackson.

I wish more people would think like you the world would be a better place. both black and white all they do is fine fault in each other or difference. I personally, have been sick of Oprah since the 90’s. So I just chose to stop watching her, and that was the end of that. People, you all have the right to turn that channel, not buy her magazine, etc. Exercise that power if you are so sick of her. But, at the same time, I do admire her-Anyone who builds an empire and wealth for themselves who was not born into it, I say more power to you. Also, as sick of we are of these overexposed celebrities, Oprah and others do give a lot of their earnings to charities and to the common good of the people— they could just hoard all of their earnings, so that has to be commended.

Your wrong. I was born in a predominately white neighborhood in Detroit. My mother took us to the black neghborhoods to play with the kids so we wouldn’t be surrounded by only “us”. I married a brazilian woman who has black in her. Two of my brothers married black women and a thrid married Puerto Rican. We ain’t all haters. Most people that I know aren’t haters. Most people I’ve ever met aren’t haters. In fact a lot of black people make more of an issue of what color or shade you are. Most of the talk here has been about Oprah as a person. Not as a color. I feel that there is a dissconnect with a lot of rich white stars as well. Look at the likes of Madonna or Angelina Jolie. Most of them bash people for not giving enough money to other countries, but they give a couple thousand here and there. Ted Turner (an arrogant jerk) called a lot of the rich people out on not giving enough. 20/20 did a report on it. Poor people give a larger chunk of their money than the rich do. Until we stop looking through those “whitey hates blackie” glasses, racisim will stay strong. You’re the hater. And you will never win.

It’s so sad that all some people can do is criticize Oprah and not get their lives together. She has been simply phenomenal as long as Oprah is true to herself then ” So be It ” all of this unnecessary speculation about her demise, lifestyle and support of a political candidate are laughable. Move on people, be positive, quit living in the past. The Power of Now !!!

Yes Harpo I did win. You marrying a person of mixed race does not make you any less racist. God knows how you REALLY are. You can front up and down this board all day but GOD knows the truth. I can’t stand when people use the “I have black friends” argument. As if that makes you any less racist. No one has said one thing about Ellen’s ratings being down. No one has said a word about Dr. Phil’s ratings being down but boy one thing about Oprah and you vultures come out to feast. Your thinly veiled views aren’t fooling anyone. Get off this board and go use that time to soul search. Obviously you need it. And this is what makes me a winner.. I was born into a very RACIST family…my mother is from Sweden and my father hails from Germany and both of them have taught me everything I need to know about hating people who are different. I didn’t allow their sick views to permeate my mind. I love everyone and I TRULY mean that. People are people. Judge them on their own individual merits. Until you learn to do that, you will always be a LOSER. A delusioned one at that.

Oprah needed to go several years ago. It amazes me that celebrities actually believe they are intelligent enough to make political, financial, and personal statements that viewers are interested in following, simply because they are on the “screen”. Very few are educated and most can’t think without a script or teleprompter, but that doesn’t keep them from opening their mouths at every opportunity, Oprah included. Her job was ENTERTAINMENT, not candidate endorsing or creating another talk show host parapsychologist. Unfortunately, the general audience watching these celebs take a great deal of their ramblings as gospel, and therein lies the problem. Eventually, they all succumb to being just what they always were, uneducated dummies who can speak with inflections in front of a camera. Most of them need to go, taking their reality counterparts with them. Yes, Oprah needs to go.

That being said, that is not how everyone else thinks. You lose, because you are hating everyone through your tainted view from your parents. You have a predisposed view. If you truly love everyone, me as well, you wouldn’t call me delusional and a loser. It seems that your parents hate really did permeate you. Deeply to the point of self-loathing. Admit it. You hate yourself (I’m talking like Dr. Phil now). Let’s hug. Maybe you need to go on Oprah and talk about your feelings. Oh, she doens’t really do those shows anymore. Maybe you should write a spiritual book on how you overcame your racist parents to hate all people on message boards, then you can get on her show. Or become someone famous.
Oh, and I don’t need to say “I have black friends”, they say it for me. :p

I am laughing that you all think that she endoresed Obama just because he is black! Just another example of how people always make things about race (and yes, I am a black woman). Did you ever stop to think that maybe she endorsed him because she KNOWS him? Obama is an ILLINOIS SENATOR (and I do believe that Chicago, where she does her show, is…IN ILLINOIS!), so I’m sure they’ve been running into each other at society events, etc in the last few years. She’s seen the man on her local television and newspapers for years, so it would be her natural inclination to want to vote for him, just as a lot of Georgians may now vote for Bob Barr for president- because they are familiar with him. Let’s try to see the bigger picture, people.

First off, this Amercia and Ii can like her or hate her and I don’t care if she’s blacker than the ace of spades, I have my own opion and if you don’t like it, well…hump you. When you put yourself out there for public opinion then that’s what you get, public opinion. You blacks don’t own Oprah’s image so get off our backs if we say we don’t like her. THE TRUTH Actually, I spent quite a few years as an entertainment attorney and have had a great deal of experience with celebrities. My knowledge of their intellect and impact on society is not without merit. They are generally intimidated by politicians, and usually, it is because politicians are at least educated, but certainly not because they are intelligent, as education and intellect are not exactly synonymous. Celebrities are insecure beings with huge amounts of disposable income, which is one reason there are so many substance abusers in the industry. The fact that they are able to meet those politicians for whom they back and vote is not made on an intelligent decision based on issues, but merely their own “star struck” personalities.

Some of you people have got to be the most hateful jealous people on God’s green Earth. There is nothing that this woman could do or say that would change your opinion of her, because the majority of it is not based on facts anyway. This woman has what a good majority of us aspire to have in our own lifetime—wealth, freedom to do what we want, and the desire to help others, but it becomes too much of an issue when the woman happens to be a woman of color, and when she is not doing what you think she should be doing with her money, or doing too much for one group as opposed to another group, or endorsing one candidate over another candidate, and the list goes on. Some of you have formed opinions of her after watching for an hour in over twenty years, and that is just idiotic in itself. Obviously the people that still watch her show are the people that still love her, and judging by the looks of the audience, I never see any empty seats in the house.

Her backing Obama did take away some of her shine in my book. Not solely because I am not an Obama fan, I just did not think it was appropriate for her to officially back a single candidate given her status. Does anyone remember the beef industry’s lawsuit against her? I do think there was some merit there. Oprah is a wonderful humanitarian, an intelligent woman and a great inspiration. I see her as a bit of self made nobility and I think that is what gives me the rub…For me Oprah backing a candidate would be the equivalent of selling ad space on the Washington Monument. Just a personal opinion.

I don’t have to like Oprah, Madonna, Tom Cruise, Paris Hilton or any overpaid, over-hyped Hollywood clebrity type. I am white and if you don’t like a white celebrity, then good for you. Who cares? You’re an idiot if you vote for someone for any office based on the endorsements of those that do not live in the same world that you live in. You can buy all the things Oprah endorses and vote for whomever she likes and you still won’t be Oprah. At the end of the day she is just another person who battles her weight like most women do. She is another person who gets lonely like anyone else and sits on thwe toilet like we all do. Who cares? For all you defending her, is this really your place in life to defend a woman you don’t know? No wonder Britney Spears is always in the news, celebrity stalkers like some of you make her a public hot commodity when she really is nothing more than a pile of yesterdays bad news.

Many things have been said about “The Gospel According to Oprah” that I agree with. But what I have noticed the most is that she doesn’t let anyone on her show do much talking. It’s such a shame that so many people have so much hatred in their hearts towards any person regardless of race, etc. This is why America is so screwed up. Why does Oprah need to give away all of her money? Do you have to be wealthy to give back? Nope. If more ordinary people gave back to their communities, our youth, and schools, we’d be doing a lot better and you’d be a lot happier.
You don’t have to watch Oprah’s show, read her book club selections, or adopt her ideaologies. Obviously some of you are avid followers to know so much about her. You all just have to have SOMETHING or SOMEONE to complain about.

Oprah’s probably paid Steddy off big time to keep his trap shut, especially about she and Gayle’s liaisons. Even her daddy was going to write a tell-all, but for now, O’s got everyone feeling like they’d better not cross her. She thinks she’s above reproach. Nauseating self-importance….I would LOVE to be Oprah’s housekeeper, just to find those journals where she’s laughing at how she has snowed all of you who worship her while she’s deceiving all of you [she and gayle]. I’d get some tabloid to pay me Mega-Bucks (cause you know I’d never be able to work again!) for the books. And SayItAin’tSo you obviously can’t read. Read my post from ~8:30 Tuesday morning.
And since you guys turned this into a race discussion—which it wasn’t—can you white people PLEASE go back to being White? Leave the tanners, bronzers, etc., alone. WE have nice, rich skin color, not you. Funny, you want to buy it artifically—even risk skin cancer!—to look sexier, etc., but if you were born with rich color, you’d freakin’ die! Go back to being White, please. Thanks.
And to you folks who worship Oprah, stop overreacting. Someone can make a comment that’s contrary to yours without being a “hater.” I am not blinded by the glare of the shadow she casts on herself. I can see past the image. Oprah is all about fame, praise and power. I sense Oprah is, internally, a troubled soul. Good night. And bye.
