5/15: More “House of Payne” on the way, B98.5’s Kelly Stevens in rehab
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

TBS has given Tyler Perry the green light for 26 more episodes of “House of Payne” on top of the 100 they already committed to and have been airing since last summer. The show regularly draws 2 million-plus viewers a week.
Perry turned the syndication model upside down. He paid for 10 pilot episodes out of his own pocket, gave them for free to networks in 2006 to prove the show’s worth, then sold the 100 to TBS upfront. So instead of airing 22 episodes a year for four or five years, he taped an incredible 100 episodes in less than a year. And TBS is airing them in a year’s time, two a week. Critics haven’t been too kind but the show is successful for what TBS is looking for.
Atlanta-based TBS and TNT are both adding more and more original programming. TNT has three upcoming dramas, all with big names: law drama “Raising the Bar” created by Steven Bochco of “NYPD Blue” fame with Mark Paul Gosselaar and Jane Kaczmarek; modern-day “Robin Hood” called “Leverage” starring Timothy Hutton; and “Truth in Advertising,” starring Eric McCormack (“Will & Grace”) and Tom Cavanagh (“Ed”).
TBS plans to flip its current 80% acquired content vs. 20% original content to 80% original and 20% acquired. The network, which focuses on comedy, has no choice. The pipeline of broadcast sitcoms of any note has dried up.
-Kelly Stevens, off the air for more than five weeks from B98.5’s lame duck morning show, had his on-air co-host Alpha Trivette tell listeners last week that he was at a rehab facility to grapple with alcoholism.
This was an unusual admission for such a light-hearted morning show and his cohosts apparently had no clue about his problems. It’s unknown when or if Kelly will be back on the air before July 1, when Steve McCoy and Vikki Locke take over.
Kelly & Alpha, who have had a successful run with B98.5 for nearly a decade, are under contract through the end of the year. Producer Will Gara, who will stay on with former Star 94 morning hosts Steve & Vikki, is covering for Kelly for now.

Steve and Vikki are like trying to prop up Chuck Tanner as a MGR. they are old, Stale and the shtick is gone-time to find new talent. B 98.5 will be looking, in my opinion, for new talent after a yr. S&V are History.

The House of Payne is a terrible show and everybody knows it. This is just another example of the media; of which Perry is a part of; feeding the masses more of what they don’t want. Its just like BET. People don’t like 90% of what they show, but because the powers that be have essentially “bought up the air time” the public has no choice but to look at what’s put in front of them. If you want to see black family programming on TV, you have no choice but to turn on House of Payne. And just because the characters are positive does not make this a good show. It’s very bad. People need to wake up, and send messages to TBS, BET, CW, and even Tyler Perry; and let them know we’re unsatisfied.

Whenever I see “Tyler Perry’s” before a show or movie, I know not to watch it. That guy is one egomaniac who just can’t get enough of seeing his own name and ugly mug everywhere. How House of Pain [sic, I know] has made it this far is beyond belief. Just shows that Atlanta lacks taste (let’s face it, while TBS is national, 1.9 mil of its viewers are from the ATL)

HOUSE OF PAYNE is actually a decent show. Keep up the good work. Anyone that doesn’t support positive entertainment on local channels should skip down to Showtime or HBO where anything goes. This is only the first season so give it time, it will evolve as the show makes money I know Mr. Perry will put it back into his shows like he has done with his stage plays and later movies! GREAT JOB TYLER PERRY!!!!

House of Payne is total crap, just like all of TP’s projects. But he has a built-in audience who will watch anything he puts his name on, so get ready for more of his under-written, unfunny, assembly-line garbage.

Simple Rule: If you don’t like the show, don’t watch it. People have different taste. I love The Office. But, I know several people that just don’t get the it. It’s the same way with House of Payne. I do commend Tyler Perry on taking a new and risking approach. I also think Steve and Vickie will do just fine on 98.5. They may not be young and hip, but neither are all of the radio listeners in ATL.

I can’t stand House of Payne, but I will admit it’s one of the few shows in the evening hours that I will let my kids watch after dinner, showers, reading, etc. They get sick of the same ol’ shows on Nickelodeon & Disney so this really is a good, CLEAN, alternative. I look for shows that don’t need to rely on harsh language or innuendo and this has it. (I won’t watch it because the acting is PAYNE-ful!)

Initially I thought House of Payne was garbage, but after watching it more recently the show is pretty good. House of Pain deals with a regular middle class family having issues that affect much of america. It is not vulgar in any way so i feel comfortably allowing my nephews to watch it with me. HOP teaches many of the same lessons that I try to instill in my boys. Children have a tendancy to emulate what they see on TV. Here they see positive role models and even the effect that each decision (good/ bad)made has on your life. Wheteher you like Tyler Perry and his mannerisms or not know that positive is positive no matter what the source.

I like Tyler and he is definitely breaking molds, etc…but this show is very wack. To me, its not very well thought out and only half the actors are good.
GaDown - I do understand your argument that we should give it time, but he has been in this business a while so he should know the market by now especially having the experience in stageplays & movies…a tv series is not that far off for him. Its all about content, actors, etc in all markets.
There is no real connection to these characters and the only reason he is on TBS is because of his name and his dollar bills…like the article said TBS doesn’t have a lot of choices for original comedy series - so this is what we are stuck with.
Tyler must only screen these episodes with his buddies or something…not real people

I loathed the show at first, and despised the laugh track. I watched it last night (I am not going to lie, Allen Payne is fine.), and I liked it. The acting was better, and the actors/actresses are getting more comfortable in the roles and are ad-libbing.

House of Payne isn’t too bad. It had to grow on me though. At first, it was too something..it was like a play and something else, I don’t know what. The characters were too dramatic but comedic at the same time, there was some confusion or conflict or something. I just can’t name it, but I kept watching for some reason. It’s kinda’ different and it’s positive, so I say “do the darn thing.” Not every show or movie or sitcom or television program will satisfy everyone. We need different flavors and this is just one of many.
My only wish for the Tyler Perries, P’Diddies, and JayZ’s of the world is that they’re giving back to their communities in a significant and effective way. Their community is supporting them and helping to make them extremely wealthy, so they need to find ways like Magic Johnson to give back to the community.
Why haven’t they invested in media programming where Black journalists and commentaries can share our perspective on the presidential race, for example. Or, why haven’t they invested in owning hair care stores where all of our weave and wig wearing mothers, daughters, cousins and nieces buy their hair care products instead of making other cultures wealthy off of what we use? I’m just saying, the community supports them, they need to support the community and place their family and friends in businesses.

Tyler Perry fans just cannot accept any criticism of Tyler Perry. Sorry, but we have a right to say what we want about his show or any other show, just as you do. And in the opinion of A LOT of people, House of Payne is a bunch of crap! The writing is horrible, predictable and infantile. Family show? That’s nice. But at least be a well-written show, which it isn’t. This isn’t about black programming, family show or anything else. This is about a writer who writes dumbed-down stuff for easy consumption. I wish the brother was a better writer. But he isn’t and his work shows it.
Like it if you want, but it is what it is. It’s not personal. Just opinion. Critics aren’t making this stuff up because he’s black or anything else. Perry’s work is not that good, even if 2 million people a week watch it or his movies and plays (which are pretty much the same themes over and over again) sell bunches of tickets.
I tried over and over again to support Tyler Perry and this show, but sorry, it’s not very good.

Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion. I think House of Payne is a dreadful show. If you like it, great. Did I say that it should be canceled, or that you shouldn’t watch it? Did I say Tyler Perry doesn’t have a right to make a living? No. I just think the show stinks.
I think “hating” is kind of a dumb word in the first place, but if you disagree with my opinion, and that’s “hating,” then so be it. I just don’t like the show. Is that not okay?

I totally agree with MT. Kay, your comment wasn’t well thought out. You post your first name without your last, and some how you’re not being secretive about your identity? But it’s not your fault. The dumbing down of black America by constantly putting Tyler Perry type productions in front of us has crippled us a people. We’ve become these ignant characters we see on TV all the time, a la J.J. on Good Times. As for Tyler’s show and movies, they can be summed up in one word…Buffoonery. His show is not funny and is poorly written. Couple that with the bad acting and it is, as someone said previously “Payneful” to watch.

I was not a House of Payne viewer until my wife was slated to appear on an upcoming episode. She told me that TV does not do this show justice. She said that on the set, this show is hilarious. How can we be mad at anybody for doing something that has never been done before? With some people you just can’t win. If Tyler Perry made a show showing Black people in a negative stereotypical light, then some/many would have huge problem with that. Since the man is showing Black people in a positive light, some people are having a problem with that. It’s one thing if you don’t think the show is funny. However, putting it down is not a very mature approach.

To all you Tyler Perry praisers: If he was selling chocolate chip ice cream, and he sold a ton of it, and then it was pointed out to you that he was using rat droppings for chocolate chips in order to cut costs, would you still praise him for being a marketing genius and continue to support him?
Sadly, I know a lot of you would continue to eat the ice cream with a big smile on your face and actually thank Tyler for the opportunity. Nothing wrong with that(I guess), but I would be embarrassed if I had to constantly defend his show just out of a sense of loyalty to a man who doesn’t even know that I’m alive.

i watch the show when i can…at first it was just painful to watch because the acting was so bad. but the acting has gotten better. the storylines speak to real everyday people and is not the MSM stereotypical interpretation of AA families.
i don’t think anyone can deny the fact that what he is trying to accomplish is very noble! there are no family-oriented, clean, positive tv shows on anymore. and, i don’t think anyone else besides TP cares about it. So, I give him much much much props for that!

House of Payne is a good show. I like the fact that Tyler Perry was homeless and made something out of his life. I just want to ask one question to the criticizers, Can you do a better job and do you write for tv shows? The show may be bad for you but it deals with many issues that are prevalent in the African-American family, especially about crackheads. I say Kudos to you Tyler Perry because I was almost homeless myself and used to be married to a crackhead.

Norcrossgirl - I never said I was a tv writer. And I’m not sure if I could do better or not (although the fact that it’s even debatable is reflective of how bad I think the show is). Again, it’s just my opinion. If you don’t agree with it, that’s fine; and that is also your opinion. Do you see how this works?
Have you ever criticized something? Have you ever said “That song sucks?” Does that mean you think you can make a better song? Not necessarily. Have you ever read an article and said “That was really stupid.” Were you implying that you could write a better article? Of course not. It’s merely your opinion.
I can sit here and say House of Payne sucks until I’m blue in the face, and I will not be required to produce a script that’s better than HOP to validate my opinion.
But congratulations to you on home ownership and on escaping a crackhead relationship.

The best thing about Comcast digital cable is you can block channels that you aren’t interested in.
I watched the first two episodes of House of Payne and then I blocked the channel and buried the remote in the backyard.
It’s a terrible show, full of stereotypes, poor language, and outright facutal lies.
I wouldn’t recommend it to the blind and deaf.

Every one is entitled to their opinion. The show is one viewed by the public, so there’s nothing wrong with critisizing it if you don’t like it. We love it. I will admit that at first the laugh track was bit off on the first episodes. But the show has gotten so much better. I really started loving it when Jeanine was hanging out on the Boulevard. We used to live over there, and those episodes hit home. Also, the discretionary sentences handed out by judges in the state of GA depicted in one episode was hilarious, sad, and unfortunately true. For all of those who tuned in early, try it again. I think you will like it.

Thank you Carolina Panther, among others. Well said. The guy is a hack. Plain and simple, yet his stuff is bulletproof because of his loyal, target fan base. I just don’t get it. You can’t blame TBS or Lionsgate or any other media outlet that carries his stuff because they’re in it for the money and his mass-produced, because it’s all the same stuff, shows and movies make them lots of it. I’ve given it a chance and find it utterly unwatchable. It’s sad but it’s business. As long as people keep begging for more of the same tired fluff he’ll be more than happy to keep dishing it out at record speeds. It’s assembly line nonsense. A letter writing campaign isn’t going to make a difference. He knows his audience and until they stop watching or wise up, and everyone involved loses money, he’s not going to change a thing. Stereotypical or not it’s easy money. You would think he would want to grow as a writer and that he would challenge himself and his audience but he’s afraid of losing the faithful. It’s paynefully, get it, obvious that they want exactly what they got the last go around. In mass quantities. The more the better. It’s all about ego and cash. His name isn’t attached to everything by accident. It’s all marketing and he’s found his cash cow audience. Plus he needs to cash in heavy before everyone eventually figures it out. Sad but true.

aome of these post just goes to show how jealousy is easy to come by. The negative comments could have been kept within yourself because this show is doing great,Tyler’s doing better than any of you ever will, and your opinion is pointless!
IF you dont like the show, dont watch it…simple…But me, I love it and Im watching reruns and all!
Good job Tyler!

At first I didn’t like the show but I took Tyler Perry’s advice and gave the show a chance. It is one of the few shows I make an effort to watch weekly. It is a very good show. The writers took our suggestions and toned Curtis and Jasmine down. They were too over the top in the beginning. I wanted Tyler to succeed because his deal with TBS was unprecedented. Hopefully, this will cause other networks to give us a chance. Give me House of Payne anyday over Flavor of Love, College Hill, Keisha Cole etc.

I have tried to stomach House of Payne, but it’s hard when you have the Uncle, Wife, Son and the chubby nephew who can’t act. The only actors IMO that play their parts to a T are the little girl and Allen Payne. There is so much over acting on the uncle and wife part, and the son I think he’s just there fore looks, cause he surely can’t act.

First of all.. Congratulations Tyler Perry. Despite all of the negative comments, you stay true to yourself. Thank you for putting on a program that my kids can watch and be proud of what the characters are respresenting. Thank you for taking a much higher road than shows like (Flava of Love, Hell Date), etc. that depict negative stereotypes. Thank you for showing our young people how to give back to his/her community.. thank you for being you. Keep up the good work.

Initially the show felt forced and sterotypical..and then it grew on me. The characters, the situations, and even the acting has gotten better and better. While I’d completely stopped watched BET the past 7 years (the 24 hour hip hop video hoe shows are sickening), and the most “talked about” shows featured those idiots Flava Flav and Ms New YOrk…HOP is a breath of fresh air. Along with Everybody Hates Chris and reruns of All of Us…they’re the only AA shows on TV I can stomach. (Tavis Smiley is still outstanding but even he defected to PBS).

First of all, I don’t watch any of Tyler Perry’s shows or have I seen any of his movies. I wouldn’t know who he was if it wasn’t for growing up in Atlanta. But, I’m happy for his success. And that is exactly what it is, success! The African-American community should be praising his work ethic and use him as an example of what doing the right things and living a good life can do for you. Instead, you trash him and cheer for Michael Vick’s return. Which, isn’t going to happen. That’s not only stupid, it’s sad.

I believe that House of Payne is a great show. It’s deals with real issues and it’s family friendly. My kids and I try not to miss a show. I guess since there is no cussing, violence or sex, poeple want to call this a bad show. I’m sure most of you who say it’s a bad show watch it weekly. I hope it stays around for a long time because it’s a good positive show and that goes for his movies as well. And for you guys that don’t like the show, change the channel. Watch something that’s a little more R-rated.

House of Payne is the WORST show I have ever seen!!!
Why do Blacks think that just because someone Black wrote the show, we’re all supposed to love it!?!?
IT SUCKS!!! I wish to God they would take that piece of crap off the air!!!

Good grief, what’s not to like about “House of Payne?” It’s great fun. My upstairs neighbor always knows when my husband and I are watching it because we’re laughing so loud, hard and long.
If it means anything to Tyler, well, my husband and I are both white. I’m 56 and he’s 48. We may not use some of the terminology in the series, but we can still relate to the family, friends and co-worker situations. We own most of Tyler’s movies and plays, (not bootlegged, Tyler), We love them all and find laughter, meaning and hope in each one, just as we do with “House of Payne.”
Lighten up, you naysayers. Tyler Perry has a gifted, brilliant, creative mind, and he’s willing to share it with us. Love and laughter are good medicine. Vicki Collins Nashville, TN

House of payne is one of the best shows out there, it relates to a lot of middle class minority problems and some topics that other shows won’t dare approach. So I will continue to watch and support it!! Tyler I’m an Actor Hire me, lol.
