10/22: Viva Laughlin canned, Amazing Race back
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
CBS’s ill-fated and ill-conceived “Viva Laughlin” pretty much guarantees actors breaking out in song are not going to be making a comeback on broadcast TV anytime soon.
The so-called drama, which featured the likes of Melanie Griffith and Hugh Jackman humiliate themselves, was cancelled after two airings, including just one last night in its regular time slot of 8 p.m. The overall viewership numbers were bad enough at about 6.8 million but the 18-to-49 year old demo figures were so miniscule, CBS must have had to haul out a microscope to read them.
With “Viva” gone, “CSI” repeats will air it its place until November 4, when Emmy-winning reality show “The Amazing Race” makes an early return visit. The 12th edition of the show was originally supposed to air early next year but it’s good to have it back sooner. It’s definitely one of my top 5 reality shows.

This cancellation should be considered a “mercy killing!”
This show was un-freakin’-believeable —- the 3 1/2 minutes I watched.

Not surprised by this cancellation I tried watching like the first 10 minutes of this show and it SUCKED — anything else on TV (and I do mean anything else)last Thursday at 10 was better than this show; it was perhaps the worst show ever created.
As a matter of fact the whole new season for the major networks just plain SUCK. Cable TV is now putting out far better shows than network television (The Closer, Damages, Monk, etc.). But its all good it just helps me cut back on the boob tube and spend more time on more productive things.

As this was an Americanized version of ‘Viva Las Blackpool’ by BBC, there were many things lost in translation. Foremost the environment and players lacked the grittiness, hunger for wealth and tragedy of the orignal British release. The cast seemed much too attractive and moreover less character driven than the orginal.
It was sort of like CSI merged with Broadway. It was a good effort, but I wish this same show could have been released on cable where it may have been viewed by a more appreciative audience and maintained most of the story and creative approach of the original.

This show was never promoted properly and the above comments of people who never heard of this show are proof. CBS started it on a Thursday and then ran the second episode on Sunday which was delayed because of the NFL football game. Who can keep up with such wierd scheduling. Seinfeld had very poor ratings until it started its second season. I loved the music in this show and now I’ll never know who committed the murder.
