10/10: Spiff let go, Randy remains

dave-ramsey-5-randy-spiff.jpg

I just saw Randy & Spiff at the Dave Ramsey event last week and everything seemed hunky dory. But behind the scenes, WGST-AM program director Randall Bloomquist had other plans and fired Spiff today, leaving Randy behind.

Randy & Spiff, as a team, have been in Atlanta on four different radio stations over 18 years. Randy Cook has always been the straight guy and Spiff Carner the wisecracking jokester.

spiff-carner.jpg

ABOVE: Spiff Carner introducing Dave Ramsey October 4 at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel

“I have no comment,” said the usually loquacious Spiff, who is still under contract and can’t talk (unless he doesn’t want to get paid.).

Bloomquist said Spiff wasn’t a good fit for the news-intensive morning show. Did Spiff know this was coming? Who knows at this point. Bloomquist said there was no precipitating event that caused Spiff to lose his job.

Last week, while gabbing with Spiff at the Beck event, he noted that he often had to restrain himself on the air from wisecracks that would have worked fine on Fox 97.1 but wouldn’t work interviewing a politician on GST.

For several years on Fox, Randy & Spiff were a dominant presence and fueled that station to great heights. But after jarring ownership changes, shrinking ratings and aging demographics, Fox 97.1 played itself out and by 2002, Randy & Spiff were out of a job and Fox was gone.

Soon after, Clear Channel created oldies Cool 105.7 and hired Randy & Spiff. But that only lasted a couple of years before that station became Hispanic music. Randy & Spiff were moved to sister station Lite 94.9, which played soft rock. They lasted there for a couple of more years, until that format was blown up for country last December. And yet again, they were able to find another job at Clear Channel with the news/talk station WGST-AM as the morniing team this past February. But that one only lasted eight months for Spiff.

Randy will still have David Hull and Mitch Evans to talk to but for many people, splitting up that team is going to be quite jarring.

Jerry Buckner, who worked for Randy & Spiff from 1989 to 2006 as a comedy writer and player with the late Bill Hoger, said he isn’t surprised. “The way GST tried to make Randy & Spiff a serious show was just ludicrous,” he said. “That makes no sense. Why not let them do light comedy and satire instead of compete with Scott Slade and Neal Boortz?”

But he said at least Randy is more attuned to this type of show, that it’s up his alley. He also doesn’t think Spiff would be resentful or jealous at all. “Spiff will be okay,” Buckner said. “I’m sure he’s happy for Randy. He and Randy were great friends. These are not arrogant, headstrong people. They were nice, down to earth folks who treated each other with mutual respect.”

This is a major move in Atlanta radio. What station will get Spiff? The Bull? B 98.5? Dave FM? WYAY? This is a good question, and it will be answered in the next few weeks.

WGST screwed up again. They already have been on decline since firing Kimmer and the crew. They need to check with real people and see what they would like in a station. The talk shows now are boring .

Randall Bloomquist has proven that he wouldn’t know on-air radio talent if it walked up and bit him.

His answer to “programming” is to buy syndicated shows instead of paying local talent. And he wonders why he can’t move up in the local ratings. What a moron!

Just more proof, there is nothing to listen to in Atlanta for those of us over 55. Thank goodness for my I-Pod.

I would bet that this age group spends more than just about any other on cars, trips, furniture, second homes, and - yes - medical treatments. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

We also own a LOT of businesses, but may not always look at our own demographics when it comes to buying advertising.

Spiff’s got a lot of talent. He’ll land on his feet somewhere, and you can bet it will be a better gig than GST. He needs an audience that deserves him. Hope Randy can extricate himself as well. I know they needed jobs, but they are both wasting their talent at that station.

Is it because Patrice Sicura couldn’t get his name right? Man, that sucks. I guess I should’ve done like everyone else and stopped listening after GST fired Tom Hughes, Kimmer, Pete Davis, et. al. Good thing Rush doesn’t work there. He’d be off the air. Perhaps GST should pull a different person off the street every day to do their shows and then fire them at the end of the day. As soon as you get used to someone, they’re gone. I guess it’s over to WSB for me, for good. Sorry to see you go, Spiff. Hope you end up somewhere back on a music station that appreciates you.

WGST Has not been the same in the morning since Tom Hughes left. His wit is sorely missed. No one in Atlanta radio today can conduct an interview as intelligently and as adroitly as Tom could.

Here we go again. Atlanta’s corporate radio stations not using the talent they have, in a way that the audience wants to hear. If WGST had actually turned them “loose”, more people would have listened. Hey, Atlanta could use a little humor in talk radio…not everyone wants to listen to Neal and the rest of the serious guys. What a bunch of management dumb asses.

WGST has done it again. I haven’t listened to GST since they fired Tom Hughes in the morning (Scott Slade is an adequate sub, but Hughes will always be the King) and the Kimmer. I know a lot of people liked the Randy and Spiff combo so this leads me to wonder whether GST’s aim is to alienate nearly all of their listeners.

Nibbles—Usually they negotitate separate contracts though in many cases, they are paid because of the value of the team and have concurrent contracts with much of the same language. Most of the time, when a team is successful, they are less valuable as single entities. I’m not sure when Spiff’s contract is up and I was never clear whether they simply got a revised contract when they went to GST or a brand new one.

This has to be the worst radio town in America. The morning drive-time serves up enough machine-gun chatter on WSB to make one a nervous wreck. The WGST broadcast signal is so weak it won’t reach the suburbs. Bill Bennett is a misfit if ever there was one. Following drive-time is the “all-about-me” guy on WSB competing against the “gone-again, back again” talker on 640. Honestly, I turn on my radio in the bathroom and have a morning constitutional by Boortz, nap by Howard, and go to sleep by the insane Crock at night. None is a real credit to broadcasting. Wise up management before the new electronic Arbitron shakes up your little world.

While I never listened to R & S on GST, I used to be an everyday listener before Tom Hughes, the Kimmer and others were let go. Also- I liked Glenn Beck who they let go, only to bring back.

The management at GST is terrible. I can’t believe they still have jobs. I hated it when Boortz left GST many years ago for WSB, but apparently he knew some things we didn’t.

Also- I would listen to Rush in the afternoons, but the reception on GST sucks.

I would like to see them go away, and the management fired.

When I turn on morning radio - I want music - not Blah Blah. All the stations have too much talk in the mornings. All I want is weather, traffic, and the music. I usually turn from radios to my CDs — want me to listen to your ads - play MUSIC ( I bounce between 107.5, Dave FM, River - used to listed to Z93 and Peach,Lite 94.9 before they were mangled) * I am sorry the team was split though — what were they thinking hiring a comedy act for a news station? *

I bet he makes his family proud,( I am just guessing that anyone would marry him in the first place,) with the ways he destroys people. What a piece of dirt. Spiff will be better off, Randy is the one we should feel sorry for. He will be waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Unbelievable! I gave up on GST after the house cleaning of Kimmer for my afternoon drive and “The King” Tom Hughes to wake me up in the morning. I finally came back when they picked up Randy and Spiff. What a great team! There was nothing better than watching Fox & Friends every morning, then getting in my car and having R&S keep up with the news & some humor. Now that team has been screwed by the simpletons at GST. I’m gone for good this time. May have to seriously consider XM now.

Although I gave up on this station when The King was dethroned, it’s still very sad to read about this latest debaucle. AM 750 is too boring for me and I’ve found happiness at 920 WGKA with Bill Bennett and Laura Ingraham. Bloomquist will get his and will have plenty of time to think about the havoc he wreaked in Atlanta. It’s time for him to get out of town now.

I can’t believe that they split Randy and Spiff up. Those guys fed off each other. They were a great team. I wish Randy well and I know Spiff will come out on top. What is happening to the radio stations in Atlanta? It seems like Atlanta is the only city that doesn’t have a oldie station.

I go away for a few days and Spiff is gone. I can’t believe it. R&S were the best thing to happen to morning radio no matter what station they were on. Atlanta does have the ABSOLUTELY worst radio of any city I have lived in, which are many. R&S in any format was great. But they were best with thier humor. Why don’t the radio programmers wake up to what the baby boomers want, a good show with good music and humorous hosts. Make us laugh. Life is hard enough without R&S in the morning.

By Dennis Jones

Bloomquist is a fool but who cares. This is a blessing because I continue to hope that R&S will soon be involved in bringing us a new “Fox-97” type radio show. We may be in our 50’s but WE ARE NOT DEAD!!! R&S need to bring us a station that plays oldies. Timeless music from We Five, The Hollies, The Tokens, The Drifters, The Four Tops, The Swingin’ Medallions, Jay and the Americans, Doo-Wop to the Beatles. Millions of us LOVE this music so come on Randy. You and Spiff pleeeeease make it happen. Atlanta loves you guys and we miss what you do best. We need ya’ll.

wgst is now off my dial and deleted from my bookmarks. Randy is great but Spiff is as well. I gave wgst a second chance with Randy and Spiff after the stupid firing of The Kimmer. The Kimmer show was my preference to WSB’s Shawn Hannity. Atlanta’s radio needs Humor. their is too much self-righteous blowhards. I am sure I can find someone on the internet to listen to in the morning. after all I do listen to Rush at a non-clear channel radio station over the net. sorry Randy b ut I have had enough of clear channel.

The only reason I listen to your station is the funny and uplifting patter between Randy and Spiff. You have lost a consumer and supporter.

I for one am glad Spiff is gone. He has no voice quality, no intelligence, and not an iota of wittiness. He really is more suited to a job as a plumber or something of that sort. The show is better without him, although it would improve even more if Tom Hughes were back— even Randy can’t hold a candle to him.
