7/25: Star’s Cindy & Ray contract extended
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Star 94’s afternoon hosts Cindy Simmons and Ray Mariner (known of course as Cindy & Ray) have been given a multi-year contract extension. The pair started in early 2003 as one of the few personality-based drive-time shows in Atlanta and they’ve done as well, if not better on occasion, as the morning show Steve & Vikki. Their show sets aside about as much time as a typical morning show for talk, mostly pop-culture related.
The current contract is up in February of 2008 so they’ll be here at least through 2011.
“They do very well among women 18-49,” said Norm Schrutt, Cindy & Ray’s agent since early 2005. “It was wise for them to lock up afternoon drive because there’s going to change in morning drive.” (Vikki Locke has previously announced she is departing at the end of the year due to health reasons.)
Could Cindy & Ray go morning if need be? “That’s a remote possibility. The contract is open to that, but Star is comfortable having them do afternoon drive.”
Other stations have gone for more personality in the afternoons, too; notably, Ryan Cameron on V-103.

If Q100 went off the air, Star94 wouldn’t have any material. Vikki left because she realized Melrose’s Place and Party of 5 went of years ago and they can’t relate with the younger crowd. If I ran an old crappy Upton’s, I would play Star94 over the intercom while the blue hairs shop.

I heard that Cindy is going to celebrate the new contract with several bottles of champagne. Atlanta drivers should stay on maximum alert until further notice.

I was never able to stomach Cindy’s voice. She always sounded like she had a mouth full of oatmeal.
I stopped listening to Steve & Vikki along time ago and haven’t listened to Cindy & Ray in about 2 years.
Sara was right about Q100 - from what I hear, they provide Star 94 with their best material to date.

My picks are: 99X for drive-in (Jenners is pretty funny) and Dave FM for drive-home (Retro in the Metro).

Cindy and Ray for afternoon show! Thank God, cause I wouldnt want to have Dylan as my only choice. He and Q100 are horrible. The only person I respect at Q100 is Bert Weiss….he deserves to work at a better station.

Steve and Vicki were spent years ago. Have not listened to that show in years. I hate talking unless it is educational..Got sick of the 10 minute commercial blocks. Now i load my ipod and listen to it all week. If i want talking I will listen to Boortz or Clarke..

Ever since I can remember Star 94 has been my station in the morning and on the ride home. Steve and Vikki are as much a part of my family as my kids are. They’ve supplied endless entertainment(including every mascara alert). I’m sorry to hear Vikki is leaving but her health should always come first. Cindy and Ray make the ride home in traffic so much more bearble. If I had to listen to Q100 , 95.5 or 99X I would rather eat glass! I haven’t really heard a rap (song) that doesn’t sound the same as the one before it. They all have the same beat and pretty much no melody. Give me Star94 anyday!!!

This quote was incomplete…I have fixed it. Sorry for the mistake: “They do very well among women 18-49 who are not married, weigh at least 200 pounds, and own multiple cats,” said Norm Schrutt, Cindy & Ray’s agent since early 2005.

I moved to Coastal Georgia from Atlanta a year ago. One of the things that I don’t miss about Atlanta is, of course, the afternoon traffic. However, in the afternoon traffic I loved listening to Cindy and Ray. They really made my ride so much better. Now that I don’t get to hear them everyday I truly miss them. One of my favorite things about coming back up to Atlanta is hearing their show. I hope they stay on Star94 a lot longer than five more years! They are by far my favorite radio personalities!

Let’s face it, Atlanta radio pretty much blows chunks. In a city where V-103 continues to dominate the ratings, we should not expect the DJs that we’re getting and the “entertainment” that they offer to be all that great.

Can someone explain how Q100 gives Steve and Vikki material? That doesn’t even make sense. Like everything else radio personalities are geared towards a demographic. What works for one doesn’t work for another. That’s called the freedom of choice. I happen to like Star 94 and don’t see the need to be so critical.

It became hard to listen to Vicki’s obnxious laugh in the a.m., so I switched to the nicer folks on Dave 92.9 FM 3 years ago and have not changed my dial. More personable hosts and MUCH better music. Star 94 caters to the suburban SUV/minivan audience who have no taste in music and that only know top 40. Cindy and Ray are a little better, but still a bubble gum program. Steve and Vicki have outgrown the times - Cindy and Ray may be ok in the a.m., but morning drive radio in ATL is a competitive market. I know, I used to sell it. The best PM drive time music is my choice of CD. Who wants to listen to any of them after a day of work! DJs need to realize that we don’t care to hear about their personal lives (this is for Star 94 Steve) and talk but want to hear good music, Hollywood dirt, traffic and weather. Entertain me and you will have a faithful listener!

Cindy & Ray—Ick, ick, ick! I cannot stand their show, and I am a white woman between the ages of 18 and 49, over 200 lbs., but no cats. I can tolerate Ray most of the time, but Cindy, no way. They sound like a couple of just barely out of college gossips trying to show everybody how cool and intelligent they are, but they are really about five lightyears behind everybody else. And they sound so scripted, it’s pathetic.

Cindy and Ray are the 2nd worst afternoon drive show. They rank just ahead of the 2 Live Stews.
At least Cindy and Ray have a little variety, the only thing the Stews talk about year round is the NBA.

WOW….some of you people on this blog have got to get out more and STEP AWAY from your computers…if you don’t like Star94, don’t listen to it! Everyone has their own opinion on radio shows, which in this case, is likely driven by the type of music you prefer..one is not better than the other..it’s a matter of preference and music taste….god people, get the poles out of your a**!

Do you guys not read the papers? Star is being sold, most likely to Cumulus, so they had to lock up their key talent ahead of a deal. I would bet the announcement happens any day now. Star won’t pick up a new morning show because Cumulus will just move Bert over- Bert in the morning, C&Y in the afternoon. Great deal for Star when under new management. They couldn’t be more obvious.

I ran the Peachtree Road race this year, primarily because I needed the t-shirt. I was tired near the end of the race but the crowd kept me going. I heard loud cheers and words of encouragement like “You’re almost there”, “You can do it”, and “hey kid, clean up your vomit”. The applause was getting louder and I felt really good until I got passed and realized the applause was not for me. It was for the guy wearing a shirt that read “Oregon Special Olympics”. That gave me my motivation to push myself. I said to myself “There’s no way I’m getting beat by this guy, there is no way I am getting beat by this guy, there is no way I am going to catch this guy”. My focus then shifted to not hurting myself.
As if getting beat by a person claiming to be a special Olympian wasn’t bad enough, I also was passed by an 8-year-old girl; overtaken by a three-legged goat; and was knocked to the side of the road as a 9-month pregnant woman hurried past me, before I hitched a ride to the finish line in a miniature Shriner car.
At least I still know I am better than Cindy & Ray, Johnny Knoxville, and Paris Hilton. * At the same time I know I am not as good as other people, so I have room for improvement, and *I can aspire to be better. Like that speedy Oregonian crippled kid.

Dear Poo,
I think I remember you! I was only able to pass a few people during the race. Were you the one I saw sitting on the sidewalk crying and talking to yourself? If you decide to run again next year let me know and I’ll send you my SO shirt to wear. I’m not going because it’s my personal protest against Mike Vick and the city of Atlanta.

I would hardly call the bert show trailblazing radio, bert’s ok, hobby is ok, dauler is worthless and melissa has gotten by on being the gay dj for far too long. steve mccoy hasn’t been creative since the 80’s. Atlanta raio is pretty much horrible. Thank god for satellite radio.

I too listen to Cindy and Ray in the afternoon. While some of my favorite bits are “Smarter than Cindy” (Which may be an oxymoron depending on who you ask.) Also I like Dr. Blue and Cindy says. All in all Cindy and Ray aren’t THAT bad. Steve and Vicki are much worse.
I have noticed that the Bert Show will do a bit, ask a question, or open up the phone lines and Cindy and Ray will do the exact same thing about a week or two later.
The best example of this is for years on Q100 when the announcer says “You’re listening to the Bert Show with Bert…” It is usually followed by some random comment like “I like cheese.” Then they proceed to do the same thing with the rest of the cast. Well about a month ago I heard the same thing on C&R.
I guess I would call STAR 94 lazy rather than Copy Cats. Whereas the Bert Show probably stole 90% of their material from some morning show out of our market. (I’ll say maybe 10% of it they came up with on their own) Instead of doing research and getting bits from other markets, Star 94 just decided to copy Q100, it’s just easier.

I know for a fact that The Bert Show steals bits from other stations. At least most of it is out of market, but one DJ in Florida called out Jeff by name for stealing a bit. But you know what, who cares? If it is entertaining, let it be. I think it is good we basically get to listen to a “greatest hits” show rather than trying out scome crap that won’t work. I bet Carlos Mencia would ROCK on radio, he’s never had an original idea. (YouTube Bill Cosby, Mencia, Hi Mom to see what I am talking about, if you don’t already know).
If they do what works, and I don’t have to think to listen to them, I am happy. Entertainment is for the masses, and the masses (me included) don’t want to work to be entertained. We want it quick, easy, and without having to think about it too much.

Hey Yadda yadda! Shut up with the racist comments. Oh, they’re talking about a black man-I have to come up with something about a white man. VICK killed dogs and no one in the south is concerned about a Connecticut Dr’s wife! check your 10 and 11pm news and see the countless crimes being committed. It’s like NEGRO’s IN THE NEWS every freakin’ night! Killing, mugging, pimping, screaming that their rights are violated because they can’t hustle someone or rob a bank! Get your community straight “SISTA!”

Way to go WAR EAGLE! yadda sounds like a congressional Democrat-always spinning it to THEIR advantage by pointing out 1 or 2 examples when there are plenty against them. Here are some statistics for yadda-Blacks are 13% of the population, yet account for about 49% of the crimes. Vick is going down, just like OJ should have. And there is no Johnny Cochran to pull the race card out of his butt to save him. Prosecuter should pull the plea off the table and go to trial. Only then will REAL justice be served and we see that the Vick brothers are what most thought they were to begin with-nothing but trouble, in my opinion.
