7/15: Net radio gets a break

If you were worried your favorite Internet radio station might be forced off the air today, you’ve been given a reprieve.

SoundExchange, a nonprofit organization which is assigned to collecting royalties for song copyright owners, was supposed to start collecting sharply higher royalties today. But late last week, with a lot of pressure from Net radio fans, SoundExchange told Congress it will continue with the status quo since “good faith” negotiations are continuing.

“For the people who want to comply with the law and are in bona fide negotiations with us, we don’t want those people to be intimidated,” said SoundExchange executive director John Simson to Kurt Hanson, who has his own Net radio operation and newsletter following the business. “And we don’t want them to stop streaming.” Simson qualified his statement by noting, “That’s just so long as they’re continuing to pay under the license they had.”

More information is available here at Kurt Hanson’s site..

My wife and I own and operate www.MountainEchoesRadio.com, a full-time, commercial bluegrass radio station only on the Internet, webcasting from Dahlonega, GA. We’ve been operating for four years and have just this year began to cover the costs (no salaries or paychecks for us)through a combination of advertising sales, donations and rebates from Live365. The new royalty rates proposed by SoundExchange and mandated by the Copyright Royalty Board will put us out of business. We estimate the royalties will equally 125% of our annual revenues. BTW, applause for Rodney Ho and this column. It’s a daily stop for me, an old jock who was at WQXI/94-Q (now Star 94) back in the day.

That’s good news. Hopefully streaming audio can continue to flourish and grow. You’ll never hear anything quite as groovy as http://www.1.fm/wm/energylux128k.asx on $atellite or Terrestrial radio.

P.S. to “Mr. Baloney” on the July 16 homophobic statement about support of Mara Davis and how it must be a ‘butchy woman..’ From what rock did you crawl out from and what century did you originate, you disgusting, piece of tripe? Some of us straight well-adjusted married ‘men’ actually recognize talent. And you wonder why the south is so stereotyped? pitiful, case closed….Now, really go away, far away.

MR. or MIZ VanSky…Interstate 75 does run NORTH if you would like to try it (please do!). Although, it has been this “po suthern’ boy’s ‘sperience” that folks from the “NOTH” are so much more prejudiced that us “bumpkins”, “crackers”, “whitey’s” or “hayseeds” that actually grew up up here, where “youze folks” moved to. By the way, I still “drawl” and talk “suthern” so I can watch people like you get stupid about it.

People like YOU are the one’s that STEREOTYPED people who were born, and raised, in the SOUTH. Personally, I could care less about a person’s skin color, sexuality, or prejudices (well, for the most part). Your prejudice is obviously showing, too. In my high school (in south Georgia)when it was intergrated), we welcomed the new students (OH! MY GAWD, THEZE DARKIES!) coming in from other schools. We didn’t have “riots” or “walk-outs”. How about New York? New Jersey? Michigan? Ohio? Forgive me if I left another Northern or Western state out.

If you don’t want to drive UP I-75, Delta is “ready when you are”, too. Just go, because I don’t want you to be one of my neighbors. I’m just picky that way, “youze” understand? And, take your Mafia thugs wit cha.

part II

this is started when ‘Mr. Baloney’ called Ms. Davis a ‘lard ass….’ Obviously, there’s depth there also.

We’re not ‘going home’ to Jersey, NYC, Michigan or Ohio. We’ll send you Where’s Waldo and you can have fun playing ‘name the states..’

As far living next door to you? You must be kidding? Although we don’t live in midtown, we do live in a location where superficial superceding stupidity is not an option.

Good Luck.

van sky, why is it that peoples opinion that may differ from others is attacked? I merely stated my opinion about Mara, yet you come back slamming me. I came back and asked if you were a midtown dweller. Now, my suspicion and opinion of you is changing again. I would be willing to bet that you have had at least one gay partner, that you frequent art museums and you tie a sweater around your neck in the fall, and you wear long sleeve shirts with shorts in the summer. Also, I bet that you or some of your friends have something on their vehicle with a rainbow on it. It doesn’t matter to me if you do, but I don’t have to like it do I?

Mr. Baloney: I’m not gay. I’m not a ‘midtown’ dweller. I worked with the lady for a short period of time. Your statement of opinion included calling her a ‘lard ass..’ based on a photo. You skipped the story, checked out the picture and off you went with the ‘your slam’ of a person who works hard, achieved success and deserves a break. Sorry, but the overall homophobic nature of your comments is disturbing to say the least. Regardless of your opnions, you need to come to terms with this obvious bias based on stereotyping people, period. It was a great, original, R&B band that sang: “Beauty’s Only Skin Deep.” I only ask you think about it the next time you’re presented with a similar opportunity. Get beyond the photo, read the story, get the full picture. In any event do your best to see past the surface. If you had a chance to meet the lady you’d undertstand. There’s no right or wrong, we all need to get along..Isn’t Atlanta the city thats too busy to hate? I respect your opinion. I’m off to L.A. for the Spector trial. And to surftrip thanks for the support. The defense rests.

Well……….ok if she just didn’t smack her lips as she was talking while on the air. I know it was her “thing” to make it sound as if she was just eating her lunch while she works along with the buffer music in the background. WHatever became of Randy Miller or the Greaseman?

Greaseman last worked in Jacksonville and Randy Miller was working at Lake 102 until they flipped to spanish. I said I was sorry; it wasn’t an apology; it’s all good..life goes on, lets live and learn…adios…. the defense really rests.

p.s. the lipsmacking is a gimmick.

Greasman is in DC on 365. thanks to the Naggers he was taken off the regualr air waves. Why a NAGGER was listening to him in the first place-don’t know. Second, Mara is a cool person. She may not be Ms. America, but she is not a lesbian surf boarder or a carpet muncher. And why would anyone want to live in mid townwhen it is run by that awful Mayor who cannot fix potholes and spends her time giving out proclamations and plaques to black athletes and secretly wishes Atlanta to be like New Orleans? Next election, we need to use BLEACH and Oxy Clean to get the STAINS and Mildew out.
