7/3: Cavemen not Atlantans
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
On the day before July 4th, there’s not too much happening.

I’ve seen the pilot for ABC’s “Cavemen” sitcom, based on the GEICO cavemen. This is not a final version and not meant for review but the show was originally supposed to be set in Atlanta. An ABC spokewoman had no explanation but the show is now based in Norfolk, Va. It’s probably just as well (and maybe they just wanted a Southern city with an ocean view as shown in the promo photo above). The version I caught is sorely lacking in laughs and the jokes are often painfully obvious allegories for racism. Stick with the ads. Here’s a trailer
DJ Red Alert is going to be doing a mix show for Grown Folks Radio 102.5 on Sunday nights from 7 to 10 p.m. He debuts on July 4th in the evening. He’s a popular DJ on the radio in New York City.
B98.5 will be playing songs that made the top 4 from the 70s through the 90s tomorrow for July 4th, going off “playlist,” which is rare for a station known for being incredibly conservative. For instance you’ll hear “One Bad Apple” by the Osmonds, “The Reflex” by Duran Duran, Marky Mark’s “Good Vibrations” and “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” by Vicki Lawrence. This is the first time outside of Christmas B98.5 has dabbled in a specialty theme. The station used to do regular all-70s and all-80s weekends and in the late 1990s, had a Saturday night dance party.
And if you miss “The Office,” enjoy this youtube tribute to Michael Scott via the song “Mr. Roboto”.
I also have to give props to College Park’s Julia Williams, the former Waffle House cook who is proving to be a formidable presence on Fox’s delightful guilty pleasure “Hell’s Kitchen,” outdistancing two other metro Atlantans, one with far more experience than she. Despite her lack of experience in fine cuisine, she has gained the respect of her fellow contestants thanks to her ability to work a kitchen. Unlike “Top Chef,” deep knowledge of haute cuisine or high-end ingredients isn’t necessary to get very far with Gordon Ramsay. To simply work not screw up and get yelled at by Chef Ramsay is a good thing and she even got praise last night.

I used to love B98.5FM’s All 70’s Weekends back in the 90’s. Finally some fun music to listen to during our 3-hour tour tomorrow on Lake Lanier.

I remember when radio stations would do “All LIVE music weekends” or some sort of specialty music on Sat and Sun. B98.5 might be conservative during the work week but I’m glad they’re trying something different for the 4th. Is anyone else doing anything special for the holiday?

If LITE 94.9 was still around I wonder if they’d be playing Xmas music today. Wasn’t that their thing? PS The Caveman show looks awful. I’d rather see a show based on the Gecko…or even the AFLAC duck.

I thought Pirates of the Caribbean would be a bust, but I was wrong….a movie based on a Disney ride?
BUT, a sitcom based on a lame commercial? Yes, I feel certain this will not last more than a couple of episodes. Whose bright idea was this? The first commercial was funny, the next hundred or so GEICO has tried, well, it’s just old! It’s just not that funny anymore! And now a sitcom? What?

Doesn’t John Heard (far right in the promo photo) look THRILLED to be in the cast of the “Cavemen” sitcom? ;-) I’m no lip reader, but I think he’s saying, “Somebody shoot me!”

I’m glad they are not basing the show in the “DEEP SOUTH” because I get so sick of the same worn out stereotypes on network T.V. Let’s see, ol dumb Bubba & his slutty girlfreind, the wise old black man & his thug teenage grandson. Oh yeah, the fat redneck sheriff and the crooked buisnesman etc, etc. YAWN!

It’s an unsult to compare cavemen to Bloomquist and Deskins, neanderthals who have run Clear Channel into the ground. A monkey or a caveman has more intelligence than those 2 morons.

As a former Atlantan living in Norfolk, VA I have unique perspective on this change. Im afraid that they will seriously misrepresent Norfolk..First of all very few people in Hampton Roads have deep (or any) southern acsents. Also people dont wear cowboy hats; people would think you were dressed for halloween. This could be a great show but they will have to find some store lines that reach beyond just being cavemen.

Cavemen? The TV Series? give me a break! “So easy a caveman can do it” — LAME. These commercials are beyond tired and now this nonsense is going to be in prime time, taking up valuable airtime when we could be watching something along the lines of “Big Brother Wants to Be a Joe Millionaire Bachelor Marrying Survivor”.

How in the world they are going to a show as country it is in this Metro. Hampton Roads, the Seven Cities, Virginia Beach/Norfolk/ Newport News, whatever you want to call it, hardly have people with deep southern country accent, or do you ever see people with cowboy hats on. This show need to pick a more southern area to run a show like this. Try somewhere in Texas, they have deep country accents and its by the water.
