1/16: Did Unity work?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I would have attended the Q100/V-103 Unity night at Lotus Lounge Sunday but I’m 3,000 miles away in Los Angeles. How did things go? From the few comments I’ve seen here and a photo I saw, I get the impression, it was heavily African American and didn’t quite meld together the way Bert and Frank had originally envisioned.

at the Unity night did the DJ play any country or rock music that the white folks prefer
Was there any country line dancing?

It was a large success. If for no other reason that the event actually occurred! Atlanta needs more of these events and we have to learn to accept and embrace our differences.
I am white. When out-of-town African-American friends visit, they are always shocked at how segregated the city is. We need to change our image and also that reality.

A friend told me about this event, but I was not in town. It seems to me that whenever you attach a title like Unity, Cultural, Diversity, etc, it has that tone of “African American” or “Minority” behind it. Just from an outside looking in perspective it would have been easier just to “ambush” people, if you will, by promoting the event on different stations as… an event… then explaining things later to the attendees. That way you might have a better chance at a diverse crowd than trying to intentionally get people out of their comfort zone. Just my two cents…
But I do think more things like this should happen… I’m sure it’s not just ‘white folks’ that are into line dancing and country music!

Its was great, what a nice club…there probably were more black folk than white, I arrived at 130 and its was jumping, some people had left though..but I like that place..It was better than on sunday the Velvet Room, which I will never go back there..The velvet room is overrateed. I like the Lotus Lounge..my taste:

I think the best thing that white people can do for black people is stay away from us. By coming together, or mixing, the worst kind of people are given cover to conceal themselves under the guise that they are good and decent people. There will always be people who enjoy the company of other groups better than their own. They are on the periphery and outcast of society as it should be. Nature has deemed it necessary. We should not encourage the abnormalities of a group and discourage the normal tendencies. We tend to reward a person who loves people of other groups more than persons of their own.
Let us briefly examine how such a practice has crippled the African American community. Usually, the less spiritual, the less qualified, the less principled, the less responsible, the less self determined, the less intelligent, the weakest, et will flock to white people given the opportunity to be in their company. Although, they all may or may not have college degrees. The stronger African Americans usually desire the company of their own people which is normal as does any other group. These too may or may not have college degrees. The former is a terrible problem for African Americans because of the imbalance in power of the two groups. The more powerful white group will automatically favor the less desirable people because of the association and other political reasons. The power of white people by virtue of coming together will elevate the undesirable of the African American community over the stronger, preferred. Other young African Americans will emulate them and forgo self-determination, and turn toward dependency. This practice has and will paralyze any community if there is not a balance in power before coming together. If not a balance, African Americans must be able to meet our basic need independently of others.
The African American community needs black power, businesses, institutions, industries, universities, farms capable of meeting the basic needs of the masses of our people. Having the power to meet our basic needs will unconsciously bring us to truly love ourselves and each other. Achieving this also gives us the opportunity to genuinely love others. It is only then will we be able to come together at Lotus Lounge and other places in the nation in unity as sisters and brother without having a disastrous outcome.

I think we have reached a point where we should bury this White Liberal Guilt that always shows up with these kinds of situations. White folks don’t have a moral obligation to help black folks. Black folks don’t have a moral obligation to help white folks. The only obligation any of us has is an individual obligation to not initiate force or defraud another individual. After that, do what feels right and stop wringing your hands over what individuals choose to go (or not to go) in their free time.

Who cares? We’re going to do what we want to do. People prefer to be with others like themselves, whether it’s race or religion or education level, or whatever. End of story. Why does it always have to be one way or the other, or right or wrong? Why can’t it just “be”?

I heard it wasn’t that great of a success. The point was to get black and white people together. It was said there was only a few white people there. So I don’t know how this can be a success in the eyes of some of you. There is always a sprinkle of white people at some of these “black” clubs. So it was basically a regular night.
Oh and “Ernie Logman” who line dances? But, I not a true southerner so I might not quite understand how going to a club and line dancing might be fun. You also probably like billy ray Cirrus (sp).

What a jewel of an idea in concept as well as execution. There’s a pressing social problem that needs to be fixed…unity in nightclub attendance. That’s what Dr. King was talking about, man! Hopefully the court system will start mandated busing for the blacks to go to Wild Bill’s. Poor things!
Today on The Guilt Show w/ Bert…
..we’ll manipulate white people to hang out with blacks at clubs and shame them when they do the obvious, which is stay home.
..later, Bert will officially become owned by Frank-Ski. We’ll have the exclusive live ceremonies.
..and we’ll talk to the author of the controversial new book, “The Whites Just Aren’t THAT Into You.”

Not sure what the big deal is about. White people like myself usually dont go out to nightclubs on Sundays anyways. We do that on Fri. and Sat. nights. If it would of been held on a sat. night then probably more whites would of showed up. Since it was free that still didnt make any difference for us to want to go out along with the black crowd.
By Kyle
January 17, 2007 10:12 AM | Link to this
First, the Lotus Lounge was simply not equipped to handle the massive crowd that showed up. Having the club manager come outside and suggest for people in line to go elsewhere doesn’t strike a good chord in terms of unity.
It was virtually an all-black crowd, but what do you expect when you have “no cover”? I don’t think that was much an incentive for whites, who typically are not out on Sunday nights. It would have been interesting if it were a Saturday—but I get the point of a neutral night.
Perhaps the two stations could each try to sponsor events on nights when their target crowd is usually not out.
I think the success/failure depends on who you would ask, but I don’t think that who ever chose to not to come did so on solely racial terms.

The last club I went out to in the ATL was dominques on Peachtree. I LOL when iread Amy’s post. She has a good point.I’m Black but hang out now more with Whites and Sunday night is not a party night for them. So I think Friday or Saturday nights would be better night choice. most folks that have to go to work on Monday don’t party on Sunday night. Also, after sitting in church Sunday morning, to party on Sunday night kinda of does’nt go with tradition.Heck I remember back in the early 80’s Blacks didnt even party in Buckhead. I guess some things have changed, some things havent. A couple of folks I saw in the picture look like they needed to be home playing with their grandkids, putting money into their IRA’s instead of spending time at a club. Just a observation.

Another dumb-azz publicity stunt for two lame-azz radio stations has finally come to an end. Unity in the spirit of drinking and having a party. This says a lot about the mentality of the producers of Q100 & V103. I’m sure MLK, which was the purpose and theme behind this bs was so so pleased. What did you do the following day, and the day after. This is not what MLK was referring to when he was speaking about being judged by the content of your character and not the color of your skin. He was speaking of more profound and uplifting initiatives. Not a party, not drinking, not dancing!!

Billy Bob- you are mistaken. The coloreds were probably drinking Hen, Patron, Christol, or Alize. They will only purchase items that their trashy rap heroes tell them to even though most of them have bad credit and can’t properly take care of all of their ilegitimate kids. This explains why you see so many thugs driving cars that they couldn’t possibly afford. As I have said before, they need to stay below I-20 where they belong.

well, it appeared that the experiment SUCKED by reading the posts. Seems it was a sea of cocoa with a few marshmallows. Way to go Frank and Bert on another disasterous project-or so it appears. I guess the whites didn’t go cause they thought the thugs would show up due to the no cover. But they were playing it safe and did not want to be subjected to crappy hip hop/rap music too.

I like football that doesn’t mean I most go to a soccer game. I rather be with people I enjoy being around. I rather not listen to hip-hop all night I like rock. So who cares if a crowd is all one race or ten different races. If I had a choice to listen to a rapper or a rocker i pick a rocker but the rocker would be jimmy hendrix and the rapper would be “MM” (sp?). Personally I like diversity I like redheads, blondes, burnettes.

I don’t think it was the best idea in the world but it definitely wasn’t the worse. I’m sure something more productive could have been planned to bring about unity which is definitely needed across the world and not just here in Atlanta. However on a darker note, I find it extremely juvenile and offensive to ALL races the choice of words that were choosen by some of the posters on this blog. It’s sad that in 2007 we still have people that live with hate towards others baased upon race….that is truely sad and i will pray for you all!

WOW, look at the posts fly! I see a lot of deep rooted racism and stereotyping in here. Well now I know what people think when they smile and see me, a black man with my wife who is white. I would like everyone to know in this post that I am deeply ashamed of my country and people. That includes all races and nationalities. If we can’t set aside our differences and just live in true harmony we really haven’t learned anything from Dr. King, the civil war or the holocaust for that matter. My wife and I were in the line of cars waiting to get into the parking lot, but also did not make it in. We went on to Atlantic Station and had a great evening ourselves. It’s really disappointing to see the hate here after Frank and Bert just tried to do something for us all. Why hate on that? What message are you really sending? I know there are a million and one reasons why more white folks were not present. It may not be for their not wanting to socialize with blacks. I can understand why some white women don’t want to be put into a confrontation of being asked to dance when they prefer to be left alone by black men, and the vise. Being a military veteran I know it doesn’t have to be this way. I know people are genuinely more tolerable when they are not around other people that would cause them to behave or act differently. I hope Bert and Frank will do this again and if I can just make a suggestion; take a look at club Europe. I’ve been to Europe and that’s what it should be a mass mix or everybody getting along having a great time. I miss Europe a lot and a regret coming home to this sorry false since of community we have here.

Just what you expect in a racist place like Georgia. If African Americans would start keeping their money in their own community like it was before integration was enforced there would not be so many dam rich white folk. Why in the hell do people feel the need to force people together that don’t want to be together?! Do we do it in hopes that we can sit back and say “oh, how nice, this country is so diverse!”. Is it that we are trying to appease our conscience?
Also, why is it ok for black people to call white people “crackers” and nobody can even spell out the “n” word, much less say it? One is just as senseless as the other!
Also, people that throw the “racist” word around and use the “racism card” like it’s going out of style, probably don’t even know what the word “racist” truly means!

I think part of the attendance turn out is a result of the amount of listeners who knew about it. Think about it, V-103 is the #1 station in Atlanta the last ratings period they got a 10.6! That represents over 1 million listeners on average. Q100 got a 1.9 representing just under 200,000! That is a huge difference. I don’t think you have to look any further that those numbers.

Damn…I can’t believe how many white boys that I layed up with after the Unity Party. I especially enjoyed getting a credit card swiped down my buttocks by the boys. I’ll be at Bulldogs on Friday…I can’t wait to get tore out the frame. Coloreds are welcome…

TruthHurts is obviously gay. He knows everything about the gay lifestyle. What is the Unity Party? (Only TruthHurts would know). Also, he wrote that last post under Puchinski’s name. Puchinski would never write anything like that. TruthHurts, you need to go back to Bulldogs, and stay there.
