1/7: 99X’s Essential 99

Here was last weekend’s “Essential 99” lists as voted by 99X listeners. Some local love is given to R.E.M. (four entries) and Collective Soul. And Nirvana’s seminal “Nevermind” only finished at No. 3. The recent success of Red Hot Chili Peppers may have helped fuel them to the top. I’m personally surprised that the Lemonheads showed up at all. Ditto with the Verve.

not bad!

If 99x would stick to these CDs for their playlist, they would be the best station in Atlanta. (or maybe this IS their new playlist?)There are what? 14 CDs from this decade on here. Does that say something about the state of Alternative music?

Still don’t know why The 1st Black Crowes CD is considered Alternative though!

Ps - I would move RHCP to #3 and put Radiohead at #1 and Nirvana at #2, but that’s just me

If they would have been playing a lot of these CD’s on the radio, I might still be listening.

I noticed at the beginning of last week (right after the countdown) that they had added a lot more tracks off these albums, so something was learned obviously. Having the countdown where people could vote on the rankings was good market research if you ask me…

come on xfan most of these bands on this list are obvious. If 99x didn’t know people liked these bands then they were in deeper trouble than we thought.

Rodney, with or without the success of RHCP latest album Blood Sugar Sex Magik is an amazing album. I have no problem with that ranked 1.

Ranked too High: The White Stripes & The Killers…I mean come on seriously..

Ranked too Low: No Doubt-Tragic Kingdom, Stone Temple Pilots - Core, Soundgarden-Badmotorfinger, 311-311. There is more, but not worth all the trouble.

Oh, and Radiohead fans must have came out for this poll. I think most of their albums made the list. When I could see at least 2 on there. Kid A is good album but come on.

I love the fact that the Pixies were on the list. IMHO they were a band way ahead of their time. Considering the influences they had on band to follow and bands that around today, I would have hoped to see them higher on the list. RHCP are an interesting, well produced band, but lack the songwriting ability, not only lyrically, but in structure and range to the Pixes.

DAPZ to Frank Black.

If you have the documentary channel, look for “Gouge Away:Pixies Documentary”. Good Stuff
