10/25: More Stallgate fallout

Chris Williams, interim program director for 96rock, was suspended Tuesday for a week, according to Eric Von Haessler, co-host for the Regular Guys, in the wake of what some folks are terming “Stallgate” in which the show secretly taped restroom conversation of the Viva 105.7 morning hosts. That led to a lawsuit that led to the firing of the Regular Guys Monday. He said he spoke to three people at the station who all confirmed Williams’ suspension. I also got two others who heard the news, too. Does this mean management culpability?

Williams didn’t answer a call for confirmation and his bosses Mike Wheeler and Chuck Deskins also didn’t response to requests for comment Tuesday by email or phone.

Williams is also program director for 105.3/The Buzz and was placed in the 96rock slot temporarily when Buzz Casey, the prior PD, abruptly left over the summer. Casey was there for only a year.

Morning producer Tim Andrews and a guy named Spencer who helped out the morning show were also dismissed Tuesday. Andrews said he’s not bitter, that this is life in radio and he’ll find another job in the business.

I wrote an A1 story about the mess in a broader sense, noting that this type of radio show may not be around for awhile in Atlanta. Here’s the link

I tuned into 96 Rock this morning and actually heard a song being played. Personally I listen to a rock station for the music and not the sophmoric antics, ravings and political viewpoints of the deejay/s. Keep playing music and I will keep listening.

The spanish stations should be taken off the air. Personally, I think they are giving info on how to get into the US illegally. Are those shows being monitored? This is America-Speak English and if you cannot take a joke, grow thicker skin or LEAVE! Tapia and Carias-Go back to Mexico! You are not wanted in Atlanta or America!

What a slap in the face. But you know what? I dare say that the only person responsible for this whole problem is Larry Wachs. Honestly, Larry and the legion of RG fans are making EXCUSES… hiding behind the “it was a harmless prank” excuse. Airing the conversation AND speaking atrocities about their sexual orientation… Come on! Larry has shown some intellect every now and then, but geez, with this stunt, he really slipped up. That was so stupid. For the sake of being “FUNNY” and doing what he thought is good radio, he single-handedly caused 3 or 4 people to lose their jobs.. Children and families’ stability. That was really really dumb. That’s what happens when you get comfortable.

War eagle.. do you honestly think the FCC has no bilingual people that can monitor spanish-language stations? Your opinion about them telling people how to come here ILLEGALY.. get real. Please don’t confirm the stereotypes about southern people and their racist ranting! As for them “going back to Mexico..” That will be difficult, since they are from the US… In other words, they are CITIZENS of this country just LIKE YOU!! Like it or not.

If you didn’t like the Regular Guys, then you didn’t have to listen to them. It’s that easy folks. I doubt Jennifer Reed can carry the station. FREE THE REGULAR GUYS AND F U STEVE!!!

This is not an immigration issue. That is a huge problem all in itself. But THIS— is an issue of right and wrong. Simply put. A friend of mine at CC told me that the Mexican guys aren’t even asking for money in this ordeal. I guess they just wanted to make a point. Don’t f**k with people’s privacy. No matter where they’re from. POINT MADE!! BAM!

I doubt if the Regular Guys were comfortable? I’m sure they knew they could be fired at any point in time. They were doing a skit to liven up the audience and it was funny. Panda and whoever the other guy is just needs to relax. I’m sure those guys on 105.7 make fun of others. Of course no one can understand them so they don’t get in trouble! I’m sad that the Regular Guys are not going to come back. I wish them all the best and know that wherever they go they will be funny!

To hell with CC. I have removed all CC stations from all of my presets. Hey Tim you were happy to hear Saturday Night Special again on 96 rock? By my estimations that is probably only the 33945th time they’ve played that song. It gets worse with every other song on thier tired format. And I am so tired of these anti-Regs getting on here calling everybody racsist I would hate Yogurt and Pandi for this regardless of their race or sexual orientation. The fact that are gay mexicans just further complicates the issue.

Is This Area For Real ?? This as an old fashion rant -I just transfered down here last month from Buffalo NY. I love the people the weather ect. Your laws and regualtions down here are very questionable to me at times, no alcohol on Sunday, Voter id issues, allow smoking in bars, but a lawsuit and firing someone over a prank - that is just sad … I am a huge Opey and Anthony fan, listen to them everyday on XM and pay no attention to local FM stations. Still people need to lighten up, if you don’t like whats on the air Big Suggestion change the dial. No one forces anyone to listen to a specific station. The FCC alone makes me p**, who are they to tell me what I can and can’t find funny. Maybe I like a good fart joke or hearing how dumb a stripper is. I like listening to Jimmy Norton talk about banging a grandma, it makes me laugh. The social views in this area are amazing and the media does nothing to help. Instead of talking about race or shock jocks - which is a media made headline - talk about the true story, these DJ’s were to wild for a politically controled radio station, that happens to owns tons of stations nationally. How does that factor in, because one CEO in charge decides what makes a good joke and a bad one, I can only like what makes him laugh ? How many stations do you need to own before you are considered a monopoly ? Like I said I listen to FM, because there are still freedom over the airwaves there. And to the guys who filed the lawsuit - grow up you big babies. You got your media coverage and I am sure a pay day from the company. Because when it all comes down to it, green is all that matters to people, forget your own rights.

Wow commentary from Jimmy Baron, there’s an unbiased opinion for you. He, himself, often made racist remarks against the Viva show back in his Toucher days. And we all know he’s married to that gold-digging t**, Lisa (Its OK to be Racist as long as youre a JEW) Baron… she was one of Saxby (I’m too rich to serve my country in Vietnam)Chambliss’ cronies behind the “Max Cleland is unpatriotic” campaign. Nice reporting there Rodney.

I’m sad to hear TRG are gone, again. I have been a listener/fan since 1998. I heard the StallGate bit and it was hillarious! It was gross and offensive, but men get over being the butt of a joke. Grow up Yogi & Panda. Each of the guys self-ridicule, deride each other and everyone on their own show more than they target anyone else. Sorry our society is so sensitive; that’s why we can’t win wars anymore.

Kudos for Jimmy Barron for his dead on unbiased assessment. Nobody has taken more shots at him over the years than Wachs, yet he still has the integrity to speak the truth. Maybe the Mexicans were in it for money, maybe they weren’t, but they damn sure were out to get Larry fired because of his anti-illegals stance. They played the race card to Clear Channel and they folded like the spineless worms they are.

Give me a break. How come any time there is controversy the race card is the first card played??? Two white radio host are fired because of the crying of two Mexicans in the same line of work. If the roles were reveresed then there would be no backlash…it would not even make the news. The two parties would probabley sit in a meeting to discuss how this type of prank should not happen again.Or the regular guys would try and one up them. CC is covering their backside because they are afraid of the sue happy minorities who play the race card at any given opportunity. Please do not hurt anyone’s feelings…or you might get sued…..bunch of whiny babies. This is why America is so freakin’ politiclly correct now.

Can someone explain why this was an invasion of privacy? I heard the bit, and like most of the Regular Guys audience, I didn’t understand a word that was being said. Do they actually think that harm has come to their reputation by airing a conversation they had in Spanish over 96rock? Why doesn’t someone break down the tape and let the audience know what was being said? If Larry’s claims that they were hurling insults at him is true, then I don’t see a problem. Whatever happened to the days where a man handled his problems face to face instead of hiding behind lawyers? The FCC doesn’t have bilingual people monitoring radio stations! I’ve heard that bit before. Cuss is spanish, and penalty because they don’t know what your saying.

Jimmy Baron has never been known for his intellectual acumen or sound mental judgement. He was one of the “deciders” who gave concert tickets to a man who bragged about shooting and killing his girlfriend’s dog (just because the man didn’t like it); he’s the guy who thought he should still be paid $300,000+ a year even as his station was going in the tank; and he’s the guy who married right-wing hatemonger Lisa Gimbel—a desperate political hack who still serves as a mouthpiece for failed political candidate (and all-around slimeball) “Casino” Ralph Reed.

If you want tips on how to walk to your synagogue on Friday, ask Jimmy. Otherwise, his opinion isn’t worth much more than a warm bucket of spit.

A tired playlist on 96Rock, a tired playlist on 105.3 The Buzz. Why would they let him program BOTH stations? Maybe history will repeat itself and he could get fired for good for letting something crude happen on his station. Rodney, do you know anything about his permanent fate? I’d like to know. Thanks.

Having gone on record as not being a Regular Guys fan, I have to say I think Jimmy Baron has put his finger on why they got fired over this. Seems ironic too - they been playing the racist card for years, now someone’s playing back on them.

((((sigh)))) You know, why is it so hard for people to understand that there are lines that cannot be crossed? It’s that simple. Wachs screwed up. ADMIT IT. Stop hiding behind the “it was a joke” bull crap. If the people who recorded the 2 mexicans in the bathroom had been hispanic or black, they woulda done the same thing. Besides, they followed the appropriate channels and got the result they wanted. Can’t people be intelligent and see the real issue for what it is instead of letting their hatred show through their words?

Hey Ray- Welcome to ATL. You’re right, we’re very antiquated down here. You’re also correct in your assesment of CC and how they run their operations. You make valid points about the FCC and FM radio airwaves. I look forward to reading your opinions about other topics on this board. Unfortunately, none of that is what this is about.
This also isn’t about race, racist remarks, politcal correctness or otherwise- those are secondary. Here’s what this is about: Personal Rights Violation. That’s it. Larry (and I did enjoy TRG) not only illegally recorded someone (without their explicit, expressed consent*)… he then broadcast it over public airwaves. Period. Of course, it doesn’t help that he did so in a demeaning and derogitory context. As far as the firing goes, well… CC screwed up by not handling it internally. It’s one thing to have criminal charges placed against one of your jocks (which has got to be auto-suspension as it is), but they were filed by a sister-station. OUCH! That looks super bad. So CC is trying to save corporate face. That’s probably why Chris Williams is gone, too.

*I do have to wonder if everyone is aware that ‘real life’ shows (like Cheaters & Cops) also have consent forms. Sure they film, but then they have to get consent from anyone who ends up on air. Google the Girls Gone Wild Cases for a better idea of what’s private and what’s not.

Admit, we are all racist, that is why America is like that. We are ignorant people who don’t even know where in Mexico Venezuela is or any other Latin American country. For us anything in spanish is in Mexico. The most international place we have ever visited is Disney World. I think we should first educate ourselves to even post something here.

choke on a burrito? gay mexicans? get run over by a lawnmower?? damn, are all RG fans this idiotic? these are the kind of comments that would even make the 2 dog-turds Larry and Eric cringe. (or maybe not, they have no common sense anyway) They probably read the blog and think “Damn, these are the morons that listened to us?” Don’t confirm what many people suspect about southerners. The RGs were due for a kick in the ass anyway. Rumor has it that CC was looking to make major cutbacks early 2007. Format change for 96rock? Maybe… happy beaners down the hall? YOU BETCHA! The beaners are the weaners.. oops, I mean WINNERS…

WOW… GEOJane’s comment is the smartest thing on here yet.. Myself, I HATED the RG’s and their gross humor, but I am totally impressed with people like GEOJane who, despite liking the RG’s can see through the hate and racist crap and lay down the FACTS.. Kudos GEOJane.

Oh, and yes the sister-station suing sucks, BUT previous stories spoke of prior insults and situations that the hispanic guys complained to CC mgmt about and went largely “ignored” so maybe handling THIS issue internally was not ever gonna happen. Who knows? Maybe this was the only way to get the RG’s GONE for good. We’ll never know. I almost want to believe that CC wanted an easy way out of the contract with Larry and Eric. And this was just what they prayed for. I.M.H.O, They were not worth the salary they were making.

Three quick points:

Jimmy has a good take on this. What does his wife have to do with this. Just a forum for you to take a shot at her. Grind your axe elsewhere.

When did Viva become Radio Free Mexico telling the mexicans how to illegally cross the border. I didn’t know the broadcast signal went that far. MExicans illegal or not currently listening to their show are already here they do not need the advice. Plus even if they did what could the FCC do it is not violating any decency standards, is it?

I am not defending Viva though. Yogi y Panda should have taken a different course of acton. Filing a lawsuit against your employer and directly resulting in at least four people losing their job over a silly radio bit seems excessive. Perhaps they were trying to protect themselves from their falling ratings. Also how many sales people will lose their jobs because the TRG dismissal will mean less ratings which means less revenue.

It’s about time these guys got dumped, Southside Steve ought to go too! 96 is about the lamest radio on the air, same music all the time, you hear the same three songs in the morning on your way to work, and if you missed them you can listen to them again on the way home. That station is nothing but a bunch of 40+ year old guys acting like they are 14,(I apologize to all 14 year olds) I guess the best they can do is the bathroom stuff. Supposedly this is “Smokey and the Bandit” humor to quote Southside Steve, gee that’s only about 30 years ago. It would be nice to have some adult humor, you know other than these drips hitting on 18 year old girls OR LITERALLY HITTING EACH OTHER. I may even start back to listening to the station now that these smarms are gone. Oh, and by the way the evening show is really stupid too, take a listen to that sometime. It will turn you off the station for good. Its about time changes were made, thank you from Atlanta.

GEOJane,

It hasn’t been proven that a crime has been committed. So to say that Larry “illegally recorded” is a bit premature.

Under Georgia law, a party to the conversation can record & broadcast the contents of the conversation without the consent (written or otherwise) of the other party.

We will have to wait and see how the evidence plays out in court.
