10/12: Clark Howard takes on Bank of America
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Peralte Paul, a colleague of mine, has written a story about the battle between WSB’s Clark Howard and banking giant Bank of America.
It’s an interesting tale related to a phony check and Howard asking listeners to withdraw millions from Bank of America. Supposedly, many people have pledged to do so.

This is pathetic - Bank of America did nothing wrong, but Clark wants to blame somebody so he can look like a bigshot (Napoleon complex). BofA didn’t pursue the criminal charges - it was the police. Why? Because he presented a fake check at a bank. If someone presented a fake check at a bank drawn on your account - what would you want them to do? Give the guy your money?
$14,000 in Legal fees is a joke - if he paid that then he truly is stupid. Clark has millions - if he feels so bad for the guy he should pay all of his expenses.
Lesson learned - don’t try to cash a bogus check at a bank!

Rod has it correct but I wouldn’t bank at BofA anyway. They are run by nazis. They charge a fee for everything imaginable. I once had to cash a BofA check. They wouldn’t cash it w/o charging ten dollars b/c I didn’t have an account even though the check was BofA.

Rod misses a key point of this situation. The guy in SF played by the rules— he asked the bank FIRST about sufficient funds BEFORE cashing the check. BoA wants to absolve themselves of responsibility and blame law enforcement for this mess. In reality, it was the branch manager’s DECISION to turn this over to the cops. The branch manager made a bad judgement call. It is for this reason that Clark is going after BoA. As for spending $14k, Rod, what would you do if you were slapped with charges?? Any person in his right mind would get an attorney.

I have no plans to close my account with such a great bank. I have been with BofA since it was Nations Bank when I moved to Atlanta in ‘96. BofA credited my account recently for a charge that a merchant refused to refund even though I returned a 30-day trial for a weight-loss product via US mail. After filing a dispute BofA and after they did their investigation, BofA credited the money back to me. I am sure for every story like the bad check situation, there are just as many happy-ending stories like mine.

My neice is a big muckety at BoA - but she already knows this - I despise that bank. I agree with Clark. I banked with them for a short while and left - I went to work for a company that used that bank, so I still had to deal with them at a certain level. They treat people like criminals and ask questions later. It’s difficult to be an honest hard working person and have to put up with the crap that bank dishes out.

I don’t plan to close my BofA account. They’ve treated me with respect and have been helpful since I started with them in Feb. Compare them to Walk-Over-Ya and you’ll agree BofA is not the worst bank out there.

We have used BoA for years - literally. I started with an account when I was in college back when it was still BankSouth, went through the NationsBank stage, and now the current BoA. I have never had a problem. I have opened accounts, closed and transferred to a joint account when I got married - and have had good service the whole journey. Twice during these years my wallet has been stolen, and they have quickly and efficiently helped me close cards, get new ones. Even when there were charges made to the accounts, they cleared them up without any issues. And, we don’t pay fees for anything.
