5/30: Summer song of 2006
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here’s a fun question. What is going to be THE summer song of 2006 a la “Hot in Herre” or “Crazy in Love” earlier this decade.
My best bet is Shakira’s infectious, upbeat “Hips Don’t Lie.” That song just jumps out, with that horn, the constant referencing to “Shakira, Shakira” and her distinctive vocals. It’s already peaking now in late May but will be ubiquitous well through September.
Another up and comer is shockingly Nelly Furtado of “I’m Like a Bird” fame. She’s done a Jewel-like conversion to sexpot/Gwen Stefani/dance star. I watched her, jaws dropped, last Saturday on SNL doing “Promiscuous.” The song, which I’ve now heard maybe four times now, doesn’t strike me as memorable as “Hips Don’t Lie” but I’ll have a better sense as it gets more airplay.
One radio expert has already weighed in here.
