5/24: Free FM advocate gets call from CBS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
According to Joey Mills’ Free FM in Atlanta blog, he got a call last week from a CBS programming exec Rob Barnett, aware of his campaign to bring Opie & Anthony and FM talk and drop Dave FM. I don’t think this indicates that CBS is about to change Dave’s format but that Barnett was sort of curious about an individual person so interested in O&A and Toucher & Rich that they’d have an official phone campaign like this.
And for you skeptics (TSM and Michael below specifically), I called Rob Barnett’s office and corroborated with his secretary Maureen that yes, Rob called Joey May 18. It’s in her log book.

I don’t know if Atlanta is ready for a FreeFM station with Opie & Anthony, Radio Chick, etc but it would SURE beat the hell out of DaveFM over the long haul.
I listen to O&A on XM where it’s meant to be heard!
Check out the NY Free FM station… http://www.923freefm.com/

Free would be great here. Dave is nothing more than the worst collection of music and personalities ever assembled. Finally we would have the chance to hear something that is not totally vanilla in Atlanta. And, before anyone says it, I dont care about your kids, if you dont like it lock the station out of your car and listen to the Fish.

Please - no. Leave Dave FM alone. I don’t care that the morning show isn’t full of interesting and clever banter - if I wanted that, I’d turn to Q100. But the music of Dave FM is the best in Atlanta. My morning dial is always on Q100, but when I’m looking for a good song, I always turn to Dave FM. Please leave Dave FM alone.

Did anyone notice that Dave is sounding a lot like 99x these days with the exception of the cheesy 96 rock catalog that they still play? Isnt 99x sinking like a stone in the ratings over the past year or so? I think Dave sounds better than it did, but the morning show still stinks and anytime there is a Zepplin or Petty song it is an immediate station change for me. Bring on Free FM Opie and Anthony and get us Toucher and Rich as well. It would be great to see Toucher, Rich, and Crash bury their old station once and for all.

I haven’t noticed Dave sounding like 99x but then I don’t listen to either unless by accident when I hit the “station” button on my steering wheel by mistake. I did notice that 105.3 The Buzz is tied and moving ahead (by next ratings) of 99x which is entirely hilarious. For all those 99x-crement fans that were busting on the Buzz, they might want to grab some life preservers.

Do you really believe he got that phone call? If you do.. call me - I have swamp land in Florida to sell ya. I find it interesting that 1) anyone would take a bummed out Toucher buddy’s comments (and imagination) seriously.. and 2) that Rodney, who is supposed to be a “journalist” (ok glorified gossip columnist- call a spade a spade) would fall for the BS spouted by a bunch of board op types at the former 99x.

I agree with Nancy, please don’t change Dave - I listen to them and they play less crud than other stations and they play songs less often. Today I can’t get Dave to stream so I “have to” listen to Q 100; otherwise, I would be listening to Dave right now.

Seriously, what kind of reporting is that? By the way, I slept with Jessica Simpson this weekend. I’m putting it up on my blog later today so it must be true. No need to call and verify. Rodney, write an article on it. Also, Dave’s new music doesn’t sound like 99X today. A good piece of it sounds like 99X 8 or 9 years ago when they were destroying every rock station in the market. You know why, because that was good music. Maybe I’m getting old and turning into my dad, but some of this new stuff is awful. However, I can still put in either of Pearl Jam’s first 2 records, either of STP’s first 2 records, or some old Black Crows and thoroughly enjoy myself. That’s the reason I like Dave even more now. They are playing stuff that I was listening to back then, not to mention, then do play some great new stuff. (Marc Broussard, Matt Kearney, James Blunt) And, I like the morning show. It’s not a bunch of BS locker room crap. They have good interviews and cover topical things that are fairly high brow and apply to a lot of people (McMansion zoning, illegal immigration, tracking/spying on your kids, a weekly book review.) The thing is, I like a mix of music and topical stuff. If I wanted all talk, I’d listen to AM, if I wanted all music, I’d listen to my iPod, but I don’t want either, I want both, and that is what I get at Dave, and for my age (32) these things appeal to me. Anyhow, my 2 cents.
Rodney, why do you hate Dave so much? I’ve never seen you post one positive thing about the station or it’s people. As a matter of fact, it seems like you rarely even refer to them unless it’s something negative. What’s up with that?

How about we take up a collection for Joey mills and a one way ticket to Boston. Where he can surgically attach his lips to Touchers posterior.
By the way I just talked to David Dickey and he has heard our message. cumulus will restore 99x to it’s full glory even though the alternative/modern rock/new rock music movement is over. Also he will agree to all of Jimmy’s contract demands. Thanks for helping us in our petition of the Dickey boys.

Dave FM is great and fills a pretty big need out there. They also play music which is pretty nice and different then some of the other stations out there. It is nice to have a diverse song list without always having to change the station. Keep Dave the way it is now!

While I tire of Dave FM’s exaltation of the ho-hum music of Jack Johnson and Coldplay, I agree that there’s definitely an audience for them, and I usually enjoy listening. Not every rock station needs to cater to 21-year-old guys who want to hear Avenged Sevenfold every hour. In other words, we already have one Buzz — we don’t need another. Keep all the noise rock and its fans at 105.3 and let the rest of us have our less edgy, less angry music on the left of the dial.

I like Dave FM. I have no clue where Michael is getting his thoughts from. As for corroborating Joey’s account, I just called Rob’s office and his secretary said, yes, Rob called Joey on May 18. So there you go. It’s true. And I knew Joey well enough that I’m not surprised it is indeed true.
