5/9: 99X/Q100 cont’d
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here’s an inside baseball commentary about the 99X/Q100 cuts but the basic gist is that Cumulus is cutting not just fat but bone and muscle and though the cuts were made mostly behind the scenes, this will degrade on-air product. Just offering it up for folks who like to know that different companies take vastly different approaches in how to make the sausage.

What are these stations? 99X? 100Q? Must be of terrestrial origin…

Despite all the drama — I think the layoffs at the end of SUS’s term must be looked three ways. 1) A nice exit package for some (that money was probably set aside in the deal) and 2) Adjusting the staff based on market position. 3)Eliminating services that are done at a corporate level. Looking at # 2 — keep in mind that as stations grow they sometimes become top ended with slaries and headcount. When the station slides back down in ratings and revenue you are left with a big staff and salaries based on when the station was sittin’ on top. It’s a shame that people become unemployed —- but its not 1997 any longer.

Brilliant. 99X gets credit as one of the first radio stations to capitalize on the internet…so they fire the web staff. 99X gains the rep for breaking new musical ground, so they can about the only member of the staff whose tuned in, Jay Herron. Geez. Also curious how the pro-Bush/pro-Repub talent (Framm, Axl, Craig, Matt Jones) are untouched (except for Wally…for other reasons, though). What a waste of a once great station.

The decision to fire Jamie Massey makes NO SENSE. Q100’s ratings were up in her time slot since she joined the show. The new ownership doesn’t think afternoon traffic reporting is necessary in Atlanta - what a joke. Also, they just don’t get that people tune in to listen to Jamie and she is really the Co-host of that program. They need to bring her back or face losing alot of listeners in the demographic they want most.

Lets face it, new owner = new staff. I am a veteran of 6 or 7 corporate mergers in my career and they all played out the same way. Clear the deck and rearrange the chairs. The ones left do their ” professional ” best to remain positive and upbeat but will basically be coping. My unsolicited advice to those who are left is: Start planning your next move now.It will take your mind off the recent implosion. It will also give you the self confidence that YOU are in charge of your own future. If you love the vision and direction that the new owners have for the station, then work at it hard and have fun with the new hires. Forget about any old traditions, its a new day and a new beginning.
