5/5: Rhubarb raises $268K, 99X cuts, Father Crunk

The changes at 99X/Q100 won’t immediately be apparent beyond the departure of Jamie Massey.

But behind the scenes, the 99X general manager Mark Renier who helped launch the station nearly 14 years ago is out. So is Jay Herron, the man who handled the music on 99X. The entire Web design team is out. And direct mail is out. Cumulus, the Atlanta-based company, officially takes over 99X/Q100 and other Susquehanna radio stations today. This is part of the expected cost cutting at the stations.

Over at Eagle 106.7, Rhubarb’s big charity golf tournament at the Golf Club of Georgia raised an impressive $268,000, the most in 14 years that he’s been doing it. His 14-year total is $1.6 million. From the press release:

We were proud to have the legendary Charlie Daniels return for the fourth time to serve as Honorary Chairman of the event. Other participants included, Randy Owen of America’s band, Alabama, T. Graham Brown, songwriters Jeffrey Steele, Bob DiPiero, Craig Wiseman and Tony Mullins, former Atlanta Falcons Coach Dan Reeves, former UGA and Chicago Bears player, Kevin Butler, and local television celebrities Chuck Dowdle, Fred Kalil and Ken Rodriguez.

And if you haven’t seen it already, the “Faith & Values” editor Kevin Austin (and my fine former boss) wrote a story about Rev. Ricardo Bailey that was on the cover of ajc.com Friday. He’s Father Crunk, heard weekly on Q100’s morning show. I didn’t have time this week to do the story so he did. Here’s the link.

With Jay Herron gone, Leslie Fram will now be able to program even more Coldplay every day. I hope all you 99X listeners remaining like “Talk,” because you’re going to hear it about 50,000 times a week.

Wow! 99X web team is out? That just shows how dumb the Dickies are with regards to the benefits of Web for Radio. Just look at the sorry sites of 680 the Fan and Cumulus themselves. …poor, poor, poor

Look, I don’t even like 99X, but reality is they and Star94 were the web benchmarks for radio. They proved that web was a great loyalty and station branding tool and that real revenue could be generated via this tool. It’s immediate, puts a visual face on an otherwise aural medium and gives listeners a place to go to keep up on things they may have missed.

The Dickies are dumb. Look at the latest books - 680 might as well just disappear - no listeners, no growth and all changes equate to …no change.

When will they fire that awful Leslie Fram? She reared her ugly right-wing head again today. I made the mistake of tuning in for 3 minutes and heard her, in one take, call “Liberal” Kennedy a liar, and commend Donald Rumsfield for doing a great job handling the folks who were asking about his lies that got us into this horriffic war. Nice one Leslie. This was during the “news pile’, and pile is a good word for that by the way.

You’re not a journalist Leslie, although you play one on the air, so you wouldn’t know this, but if you’re going to add commentary with the news, at least do it fairly. Assuming Kennedy is lying, why is that lie worse in your pea-sized brain than the lies that got us into war? Fire this woman.

Rupert Murdoch, it seems you have some strong opinions on Leslie Fram and in the U.S. you are allowed to share your opinions, correct? So why can’t Leslie say what she wants to without getting harassed and asked for her firing from people like you? Just curious what makes you better or more correct than her…

Is Dickey Broadcasting part of Cumulus? For some reason I thought they were two different groups…

Change can sometimes be good, but in this case I think not. Rev. Crunk best look out for the pink slip too. It’s interesting that Calandroid’s, who was an asset for many years, has been shunned like he’s working for a competing station (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=8045744&blogID=117300112&MyToken=1744dd6a-726c-42fa-b7b1-3e0352013190). I just wonder if anybody on the sinking ship will….blub blub….blub…..blub

Mel…Dickey Broadcasting and Cumulus are 2 different groups. At least on paper that is. They are seperately owned by brothers. They were bidding for the Atlanta Braves, but I believe they are out of the running at this point. It would not surprise me though that down the line that Cumulus and Dickey Broadcasting merge into one company especially in this day and age of media mergers.

I don’t think that the brothers will sell to the public company until the value of 680’s stick goes up.

Hey Poison, Fair question. But she’s the first one to criticize anyone who questions anything about this war. She’s always got a negative comment for them.

She’s more than welcome to espouse her rightist bias, but it is because of our lazy and unquestioning media that 1,000’s are dead, dying or maimed for life in this war in the first place, and maybe she’s unfazed by that but I’m not. And the numbers go up daily. And I don’ t think people tune into the 99x for these shallow asides.

That’s what the Regular Guys are for isn’t it? At least they tell you up front where they stand. And they can be funny. Like I said I only tuned in to 99x for a few minutes today and got this, and it has just gotten old. At least get two people on the show who can go back and forth on something.

Cheerio,

How is Ryan Cameron’s show doing? Any chance of numbers for V-103, or you just assume they always are number one?
