12/19: Five predictions for Atlanta radio 2006
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I have been known to be a horrible prognosticator but since all AJC bloggers are offering predictions in their respective blogs, I’m joining the rabble. I do promise to come back in December, 2006 and see how well I did.
1) Jamz 97.1 will change format. Or finally add jocks. Or at least stop slamming V-103 every hour. (Who said I had to be Jeanne Dixon-level definitive?)
2) 96rock’s The Regular Guys will say something that will cause some sort of ridiculous, pumped-up controversy. But they’ll keep their jobs this time around.
3) 99X, struggling in the ratings and soon to be under new ownership, will see some major changes behind the scenes and possibly on the air.
4) WSB-AM, which now only have the Dawgs for sports, will try to get the Falcons from Dave FM. But are they willing to pay the price? (They’ve made huge profits by dropping the Braves.)
5) At least one major morning show will be blown up, one that nobody will necessarilly expect. That’s such a vague prediction, I might actually get that one right! :)
Bonus prediction: Porsche Foxx will find a new job in Atlanta. Will Hot 107.9 or Classic Soul find a spot for her?

I agree with your first prediction off the top Rodney. Something is going to change with 97.1 Jamz. Cox Radio should be ashamed of themselves after almost 3 years on the air the station still sucks bashes V-103 for no reason which isnt helping the ratings any. Find a new line to say cause people are bored of it.
I also agree with the 5th prediction. I will take it a step further and say the A-Team on Hot 107.9 will be dismantled before the end of 2006. The station will either bring in Radio One owned show Russ Parr or will find some better local talent to host the morning drive. (Good Show idea for R1 is to put Porsche Foxx and Toss Swaid on a show and see how it works).

I agree, the morning show on 107.9 needs to be revamped. Reshawn is too serious and Griff is not funny. His California accent is exaggerated and overbearing. Poor CJ, she should stick to Playboy!! ;0)

The major radio station V-103.3
I have a feeling that Frankski and Wanda are looking for better opportunities.
It’s coming.
Actually, I’ve expected Wanda to spread her wings anytime now.
I can see her on a sitcom.
Not sure where Frankski can head.

107.9’s morning show may be called the A team, but the on air talent gets F ratings. All they talk about is which high school is the hottest and what they ate the previous night for dinner - WHO CARES? - the traffic lady Paula (I’m mad at the world) Phillips always tries to cut ppl down with her dry jokes.
Russ Parr was good and funny!
103.3’s morning show also needs a shake up. I’m so over Frank Ski talking about his trips to other countries, the Range Rover, his house in Sandy Springs and all the hip hop events he has attended. I thought Frank Ski hosted a morning RADIO show - and not a t.v. show called the “Fabulous Life of Frank Ski.” We can only hope Wanda (I always agree with Frank Ski no matter what) Smith will walk with him.

You’re gonna get 2 predictions right with one blow. As bad as 99x’s morning show has been, it will be blown up by the new station owners.

One possibility that bears mention when talking of radio predictions is that an FM station in Atlanta will change to all Talk. I know it’s been tried before but given the state of music on radio Talk is going to replace music on many stations nationwide in 2006.

After i disconnected my FM antenna from my car radio, and got XM, I really dont care about the ATLs radio stations, they can all become talk or sports, thats what they are anyways.

Atlanta radio market is way too conservative. I purchased sirius satellite radio for my car 3-mos ago and haven’t once tuned into any fm or am station here since. The monthly fee for satellite service is well worth it considering the lousy(i use this word lightly) state of the Atlanta radio market.

I like all your prognostications. But isn’t this a good time for WSB-Am to go retro and give us network radio news on the hour, provide a DJ with the old pop hits, and have some local news up to TV standards. At night they could clean up with Georgia and area news features and so forth. It’s about time. Rewtro to their origins as a clear channel leader.

I think 97.1 Jamz should either change back to Fox 97.1 and the oldies format to replace Cool 105.7, or have Cox Radio bring its 80’s “Point” format to Atlanta and switch to 97.1 the Point.

This is a good time for me to comment on Atlanta radio once again. For the most part, I just lurk on this blog. From time to time I put in my two cents worth, just to get things off my chest if for no other reason. About a month ago I threw in the towel as far as Atlanta radio is concerned. I became an XM Satellite subsriber and have never looked back at all. It’s the best money I’ve spent on entertainment in quite a while. If you are a music fan and still spend time worrying about the local situation, stop worrying and get satellite radio. You can’t even imagine the world that awaits you on the “other side of the fence”. I predict 2006 will be a huge growth year for satellite radio in the country, but particularly in awful markets such as ours. And for that reason I also predict that Atlanta radio will see many changes in the coming year and the years to follow. Listership will continue to move over to satellite. And who will the stations blame? Maybe they should all look at themselves and what they did to kill their own business. It is happening quicker that you think. For anyone waiting to take the step, stop waiting. You’ll never look back.

The big story will be that morning radio listener numbers will DROP due to XM and Sirrius penetration. Stations will be either “talk” or have only limited announcements with music returning as the main focus. Those who don’t adapt will be left in the dust. The revolution in radio has begun. Forget Ski, guys, Rhubarb (sp), the “Team” or Vicki. To tweek a political axium, “It’s the music, stupid.”

Toucher’s morning show on 99x and Whip’s show on the Buzz offer the best in entertainment in Atlanta for mornings. As an XM subscriber, I listen to XM after their shows end. I am not sure how big a shakeup will occur at 99x. I would guess that Cumulus would want a R.O.I. pretty soon so I will keep tuned. I think that Chris Williams over at the Buzz will 99x a pretty good run for the money.

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR PORSCHE FOXX ON THE RADIO AGAIN!! SHE WAS REAL AND CARED ABOUT THE COMMUNITY. IF ATLANTA REALLY WANTS TO GET THINGS PUMPED UP, WHY NOT GET SHOCK JOKCS HOWARD STERN AND WENDY WILLIAMS FROM NEW YORK CITY SPOTS ON THE RADIO?!
RYAN CAMERON, YOU ARE MY MAN BUT YOUR SHOW SEEMED MUCH BETTER ON 107.9 MAYBE THEY CAN REVAMP IT AND PUT RYAN BACK IN MORNING RADIO WHERE HERE BELONGS. THEY DESPERATELY NEED HIM.
FRANK AND WANDA ARE THE BOMB ON 103 BECUASE THEY HAVE BALANCE. WANDA IS GHETTO AND FRANK IS SNOBBY. IT’S COOL THOUGH, BECAUSE IT WORKS. GET RID OF MISS SOPHIA. ATLANTA IS CONFUSED ENOUGH WITHOUT ANOTHER ANNOYING RADIO VOICE. IF YOU ARE GOING TO GET A DRAG QUEEN AT LEAST GET ONE THAT LOOKS GOOD.

i hope 99X does not change the Toucher, Jimmy, and Leslie morning show. It is excellent in my opinion. I think Toucher is a much needed voice of free thinking in the Atlanta DJ world. I appreciate the fact that he does say what’s really on his mind, and he is damn funny to boot.

The only salvation for the terrible local radio - XM baby, XM. I’ve lived in Atlanta 17 years and nothing has changed for the better. Time to flush the local market

really though, Ryan probably doesn’t want to go on in the mornings anyway! But him and Elle would be good in the mornings. His show is different now cause you can’t do the same things in the afternoon that you do in the morning. biggest thing being talk really. I’m sure you notice they play a lot more music after 2:00. Before you criticize, learn the game.

I predict that 2 or 3 of the hosts on WAOK might take some classes and learn how to speak proper English on their shows.

How about this. If you have Xm or Sirius, and don’t listen to Atlanta radio, don’t complain about Atlanta radio. Its like me complaining about the current state of hotel banquets, although I haven’t worked as a banquet server in years.

Jerron:
You are wrong, unfortunately. WAOK’s hosts do NOT have to speak English, or be intelligent by the way in order to remain on that station. All they have to do is ensure that Rick Caffey’s pockets continue to be aligned with money from crooked useless civil-rights organizations—courtesy of the WAOK hosts continuing to promote their stupid propaganda. Speaking improper English only ensures proper communication between their DUMB followers.

Brooke:
I knew I shouldn’t have bitten the hook, but since I did, then I’m compelled to respond to you. You need to visit my website— www.bjellis.com for updates on my whereabouts, and you would have to email me privately in order to get access to inside information regarding my correspondence with Infinity Broadcasting pertaining to the programming deficiencies with WAOK. In short—there’s NOTHING new & improved with that station. WAOK is funded by V-103, and its sole purpose is to promote outdated civil-rights crap all day everyday in order to indoctrinate stupid black people into continuing to contribute to useless organizations, and crooked preachers, all that vow to “fight” for the “rights” of “the community”. There’s very little doubt that Caffey & co. is being paid “royalties” for broadcasting this garbage. I have so much more to add to this, but I don’t want to make this too much longer. Just email me—truthinstrument@yahoo.com, and I’ll provide you with much more information on my findings.

Hey Kemi…happy holidays! Girl I was being sarcastic, that line-up is a complete joke. Now that the sports show is gone nobody and I mean nobody has any mic personality or intelligence.

Brooke:
Yet another reminder: Personality or intelligence is NOT required in order to be on the air at WAOK. Keep Rick Caffey happy by keeping the corrupted funding in his pockets, and you can have a show there. The sad thing is that Reggie Rouse (the “so-called” program director) does not have the courage to either demand a transfer to a station that HE can actually program. When (not if) Infinity decides to clean house (and that will be sooner than later—especially if V-103’s ratings continue to slip), he will be the first to go ALONG with Rick Caffey. The difference is, that Rick will get another job, Reggie Rouse will NEVER get another programming job of this magnitude. Can anybody say Tony Brown? What big market station is he programming today? See, it doesn’t pay to be the fall guy for the one who’s ACTUALLY making the programming decisions (see Bruce Collins, FORMERLY of WGST). I’m actually LOVING every minute of this, because I WILL get the last laugh in all of this. Just be patient—I am. Keep this simple equation in mind:
Bad Programming = Bad Ratings Good Programming = Good Ratings

Brooke, speak for yourself; “WE” didn’t miss BJ. BJ it seems like 99% of your blog are always negative. You have nothing to say good about anybody. I don’t mean to bring up the “race card”, but you sound like a broken record and a self hating person. You say that the “black” people who listen to WAOK is “DUMB”. People have the right to listen to whatever they want to. It’s like you are saying that everyone who listen to rap is a thug. You are always speaking negative about black leaders and people. What have you done for the community or people in general? Even on your website, you have a skit about “Shawty and Folk”, where you are picking fun at black people. You don’t have a skit about Betty and James. I don’t hear you picking at white people and how they talk. You also have commentary on how black people act in “The Trapp”. You always have something negative to say but never anything to uplift people. I know that you are going to reply to this blog. But as the man said in Gone with the wind, “I don’t give a @##”.

BJ-
You sound like a bitter has been who is just ridiculously insecure about your own shortcomings so you comment on others. And who said v-103’s ratings have slipped. Do you read arbitron? They have the number one morning show and afternoon show in atlanta! Not a huge fan but I also give credit where credit is due! Don’t make up facts to pad your baseless story!

If I thought you actually knew something about radio, then I would engage you in serious dialogue. However, your comments confirm that you don’t have the intellect or knowledge to even remotely understand. As for Donte, keep hope alive! Maybe you will find something that I’ve said before that isn’t TRUE. You have NOT so far.

Personally, I feel sorry for 99X. Their Monday after Thanksgiving show talked about how bad their ratings were on Thanksgiving Wednesday…just sad. I used to listen to them back in the day prior to discovering the new & improved 92.9FM. Their music format reflects my maturity. Rodney, is Dave FM the morning show you think will blow up?
As far as Dave FM’s sister station, V103, I don’t like its Morning Show. I’m sure this blog can guess my reasons from the other posts. I just don’t find it entertaining – even with Miss Sophia. Now one has to remember that V103 has 100,000 watts, the highest wattage a station can get – which gives V103 an edge in the ratings race. Second, Ryan Cameron is not competing with Frank & Wanda anymore since he left Hot 107.9. As far as the options for black radio in Atlanta, this leaves the A-Team with Griff (so not impressed), Tom Joyner (whose audience I think is older), and other black music stations with no DJs. In my opinion, the Frank & Wanda show has no real competition from other radio stations with a black music format (maybe the ‘Hits’ stations if you can stand the pop 40).
I would like to hear radio shows like the BJ Ellis show because it’s different. It’s refreshing to hear a show that’s not a clone of others. I ventured to his website and listened to a couple of them. I think radio would have major issues with his content (and perhaps why he’s having difficulty getting on the airwaves), but “shock-jocks have a following – i.e. Howard Stern. Aaron McGruder’s Boondocks has said some things that have offense people, such as the BET strip featuring the romp of a black woman. Were they bold – you bet! McGruder said what he felt needed to be said and he has a following. I think radio being wary of BJ Ellis is akin to FOX being wary of airing the Boondocks cartoon. Is there a radio station with boldness of a Cable Television station?

Predicting the Regular Guys will say something really stupid that will cause controversy is like predicting the Braves will lose in the playoffs….like predicting the Democrats and the Republicans will not get along next year…like predicting someone tomorrow will have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich….just TOO predictable.
Go out on a limb next time, predict something like….The Regular Guys get canned for a decent DJ who actually plays music in the morning….They used to be funny, now they are just sad and saying dumb things thinking to get a rise out of someone, but they are so irrelevant now that nothing they say truly upsets anyone anymore….
