Whoopi says she ‘stepped right in it’

Describing the fallout from the Michael Vick comments she expressed on her first day on the job as the new moderator on “The View” Tuesday, Whoopi Goldberg told the audience Wednesday morning: “I stepped right in it.”

On Tuesday, Goldberg created headlines when she defended the benched Atlanta Falcon quarterback’s dogfighting activities as “part of his cultural upbringing” in the South. Animal rights activists were quick to argue the point with the actress in the media.

“I’m not condoning what he did and I condemn what he did,” Goldberg clarified on Wednesday’s broadcast. The Oscar-winner also took issue with how the media “edited” her comments in the fiery aftermath.

Said Goldberg: “If you read the papers today, I’m eating dogs; I’m swinging dogs by their tails.”

Goldberg went on to say of Vick’s actions: “I thought it was horrible…PETA and I are very close.”

During Wednesday’s live broadcast, the comic also inadvertently displayed a rather tenuous grasp on current pop culture when she added: “It was how my comments were edited. You can’t go on the Internet and see what I said.” (Goldberg may want to have a computer-savvy co-worker bookmark www.youtube.com for handy future reference…)

“View” creator and co-executive producer Barbara Walters — having just experienced a year of nearly non-stop headlines during former “View” co-host Rosie O’Donnell’s stormy tenure on the ABC Daytime talk show — sighed and joked on-air Wednesday: “This is deja vu!”

Smell of success

During the next week, Alpharetta home seller and newlywed Usher will be working overtime to ensure that everyone smells more like him. Or at least, his new signature scents, Usher for Men and Usher for Women. The pop star will unveil the pricey perfumes at an in-store signing for fans at Macy’s Lenox Square Sept. 13 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. This week, he guested on the fifth season premiere of “Ellen,” where talk show host Ellen DeGeneres got so excited that she sampled some of the stuff via her mouth. We’re nearly certain that a certain domestic diva will take a more, well, tasteful approach when the expectant father guests on the season premiere of “The Martha Stewart Show” Monday (WXIA at 2 p.m.).

ON MY TiVO

Dunwoody High School grad and upcoming Emmy Awards host Ryan Seacrest:

“I like ‘The Office.’ I like ‘Desperate Housewives.’ ‘30 Rock’ makes me laugh.’ I’m into ‘Heroes.’ Sometimes, I watch the ‘American Idol’ results show to see who’s kicked off.”
