Find your favorite fall festival
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here’s opening night of the 2006 North Georgia State Fair, featuring David Smith, The Human Cannonball, and the Seattle Wheel, billed as the world’s largest portable ferris wheel. The 2008 fair runs Sept. 18-28.
I guess it doesn’t matter where you live, once fall rolls around, festivals follow with their deep fried delicacies, artists’ booths and blinking, whirling amusements.
In Michigan, every fair and festival seemed to follow the same pattern: The (year) (city/organization name) (fruit, vegetable or herb) Festival! In the case of the town where I went to high school, we celebrated booze. Rather, the elimination of booze via woman with ax. Never you mind the beer tent.
Here, the fall festivals seem geography-specific. Candler Park Fall Fest, East Atlanta Strut, Old Milton Country Fair, Gwinnett County Fair, North Georgia State Fair, Georgia State Fair.
Wow.
Don’t be overwhelmed. Here’s a map of some fall festivals and a list of many more.
What are the best of the fests? Newcomers, what’s your favorite part of a fair, and do you think you’ll find it here?

My last name is Nation…My wife’s first name is Kerry. I always wanted to open a bar and call it Carrie Nation’s Prohibition Pub. =) Have hatchets embedded in the bar top every so often.

The Georgia National Fair in Perry. This is the greatest fair in the state. If you have not ever been then do yourself a favor and go this year! October 4th to October 12th. Octoberfest in Helen is also pretty great.

The Georgia Apple Festival in Ellijay. I’ve been for the past 4 years. All kinds of “festival stuff”….food, crafts and apple dumplings, apple cider and apples….it’s a great way to spend a day with the family. If you go, try the fried pickles. I’ve never had them so thin and crispy anywhere else!!! It’s two weekends, 10/11 & 12 and 10/18 & 19. Saturdays 9a-6p and Sundays 9a-5p

My friends and I have our own fall festival. We wait for the temps to drop, then we plan a weekend of going to football games, golf, grilling steaks, and hiring a couple of females from the worlds oldest profession to provide services each evening.

The best thing about the apple fest is the drive up. Unfortunately my wife and I have coined the term leaf peapers for people that must drive to the mountains each fall.
The festival itself is so/so. Look for the fried pickles - they are excellent. However, there didn’t seem to be an emphasis on safetey so they may have burned down their booth.
