Friends don’t let friends risk bad tattoos.

Some things should be done only with the recommendation of others.

Cheap Chinese food, for instance. It can be sickening to even the drunkest gullet, or a surprising delight. (Delivered!) It helps when someone vouches for it.

Unknown books longer than 500 pages. Pet adoption organizations. Movies that might be cult-classic dark comedies or whole new varieties of stupid. Yes, recommendations matter.

Another: piercers and tattoo artists.

A bad mall piercing isn’t likely to cause the trouble of, say, a bad trip to the cardiologist, but why should it be bad at all? (Bad trip to tattoo parlor…yikes. Not something I want to experience. Not something I’m willing to risk, really.)

I feel lucky to have a friendly, vouched-for piercing studio in the neighborhood. It’s nice to have a jewelry-maker and an autoclave around when you need one.

What’s your Atlanta area piercing and tattoo business of choice?

(By the way, newcomers, if you want to know the state rules and regulations about tattooing and piercing, use the searchable Georgia code. Just type in the word “tattoo.”

And check out our galleries of tattoos.

tattoo.jpg Katrina Sanchez of Smyrna got a tattoo from Brett Zarro of Oneonta, NY during the 11th Annual Atlanta Tattoo Arts Festival on June 17, 2007. Zarro had drawn the outline freehand and was filling in the details and color.

All or Nothing Tattoo. Best tattoo studio in Atlanta, and voted best in the country many times. Chris Vennekamp is the artist I go to. Highly professional, clean and friendly.

The Illistrator in Dallas (I believe). Debbie has won several awards and is highly recommended by everyone I know. Also Southside Tattoo in East Point does great work.

I went to Sacred Heart tattoo which I believe was on Indian Trail, or around that area in 2002. My friend got a tattoo with me & hers looks great to this day. Mine looks like crap. I’ve heard other people rave about that place but I can’t suggest it to anyone because I know how mine turned out. The “artist” was just about done and said “I hate this purple, it never stays”. Unfortunately, I was vacationing at the time so by the time the purple faded away (only about a week later) I was 18 hours away. And I’ve been told by other artists that in order to fix it they’d have to start all over.

All or nothing is great! I have had three tattoos done there and they did an amazing job, even with my strange requests( translated poem in ancient language)! Also Liberty Tattoo is another with a great reputation for artists, they do not do piercings though. Do you research, take your time, and really talk ot the artist about what you want to have, remmeber u are now there walking art canvas! And enjoy! I am in teh market for a new tat, looking for someone who specializes i n flowers, my guy at All or nothing moved to Cali but I will go back there fore sure if I dont get any other recs. Peace and love!

Epic Tattoo in Woodstock is great! Mike (the owner) did my mom’s last year and mine (freehand) this year and we were both VERY impressed by the cleanliness of the shop and Mike’s professionalism and talent. He’s also a very cool guy!

Why you women choose to mar and scar your feminine skin is beyond me. It was fine before. Now it’s not.

OVERLORD TATTOO on 10th Street

the true test of a good tattoo is if the artist actually draws their own work. this is something that should be your own not something picked out of a catalogue.

also, look at their portfolios. a lot of the tattoo shops in atlanta have their portfolios on the counters… check them out. if their work is hit or miss go somewhere else.

Overlord does not use flash tattoo art. they do original pieces. they also spend a lot of time doing corrections of pieces from other shops in the area.

so, save your skin and go talk to their professionals at Overlord.

If you want a female tattoo artist with skills, try 13 Roses Tattoo Parlour and ask for Danielle. It’s off of Glenwood and Flat Shoals in East Atlanta.

She designed a flower piece as a cover up to a jacked up tattoo I got years ago. In my opinion, when someone can successfully cover up another artists BS tat, you’re good!

Hey SAM, I’m hot, even with my 3 tattoos… ;) But more then being hot, I have a career, great fsmily and friends who dont judge me, and a great outlook on life. There are way more things to worry about in life then a few tats. Trust me, life is short. Peace and love.

I got my first tattoo on Saturday at Tattoos by Randy in Jonesboro. And I am beyond thrilled with the results. I went in there with an idea of what I wanted and Kenyatta took it and turned it into a masterpiece. I couldn’t be any happier.
