Versace’s Oscar sweep
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Forget about “Brokeback…. Let’s talk about the big “comeback.
By dressing at least four of the most eye-catching leading ladies at the Oscar’s Sunday night, the Versace label made huge strides toward a red carpet resurrection.
Not since the 1994 premiere of “Four Weddings and a Funeral, which Elizabeth Hurley attended in the now-infamous “safety pin dress that Gianni Versace created for her, has the Versace label made such an impact on the red carpet.
The label, now helmed by the late designer’s younger sister, Donatella, snagged a bevy of A-List names: Uma Thurman (in white), Salma Hayek (in blue), Hilary Swank (in black) and Jessica Alba (in gold). So there’s no denying that Versace won out in the celebrity sweepstakes.
Other designers made fine showings as well. Narcisso Rodriguez (Rachel Weisz) and Michael Kors (Jennifer Garner) showed great skill at wardrobing starlets in the later stages of pregnancy. And Carmen Marc Valvo (Queen Latifah) gave a textbook example of how to dress a full-figured woman.
Zac Posen deserves great kudos to ramping up the feminine image of “Transamerica star, Felicity Huffman. Conversely, John Galliano deserves to be panned for the overwrought swirls of black silk he draped Charlize Theron in for Dior.
The jury is still out on how successful a night it was for Vera Wang, who dressed Michelle Williams as well as Keira Knightly; to these eyes, Knightly looked like the picture of glamour and sophistication, where as Williams looked as awkward as someone with a big dollop of mustard on their shirt.
What was your take on the night’s attire.

Play the pre-Oscar fashion guesssing game
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What will we see on the Oscar red carpet Sunday night? My sources already in Hollywood for pre-Academy Award festivities are offering conflicting reports. Constance White, the fashion director for eBay, is doling out clothes and jewelry to anyone interested from her suite at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. She tells me that all the A-Listers are in a party hearty mood and that their Oscar night looks will reflect it. She predicts that pastel-colored gowns will rule the red carpet, as well as styles in “safe shades of black. White thinks styles reflective of the 1950s have captivated the stylists dressing the stars: so look for gowns with volume and high waists. And expect to see carefully-coiffed hairstyles, she says. On the other hand, Jovani eveningwear designer, Saul Maslavi, said jewel-toned gowns (ruby, emerald, sapphire) are what he expects the leading ladies to wear. Diamond and gold jewelry will be worn ostentatiously, Maslavi predicts. And he’s wagering that hair extensions and coloring will be relied on heavily to ramp up the “glamour quotient. Who do you think will be the best-dressed Oscar night attendees, and whose looks do you predict will land with a thud? Hit back on ajc.com Sunday through Monday as I critique the red carpet’s best and worst.
