If you ran the Oscars…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Oscars are Sunday night. Here are some predictions:
They will be too long. They will have way too many people I don’t know and don’t care about. I will keep watching cause it’s got to get better any minute. It won’t.
No other awards show is as self-indulgent as the Oscars. The others give us great performances and end at exactly 11 p.m. The Oscars give us a team of film sound editors all huddled around a microphone thanking their spouses and end the next day.
So if you ran the Oscars, how would you change it? Who would you have as host? Who or what would you ban?
Making it shorter is a given. Here’s your chance to be creative.

Too many commercials. Like any other special program there just seems to be too many ads.

The biggest thing I would change about the oscars is not even with the ceremony itself. I would change the nomination process to better reflect the film tastes of the majority of the population. Tell me how a movie that makes over 500 million dollars at the box office while receiving rave critical reviews does not get nominated for best picture. And most of the nominees are movies people would not see unless they were being nominated. The oscar voting committee is so out of touch with the majority of theater-goers it’s not even funny. However, on the subject of the ceremony, I would cut it down by half, simply make announcements about all the technical awards (no sense waiting on 25 people to come on stage so one can talk for five minutes), and have the host and one announcer (the amount of time it takes to bring announcers on and off stage is ridiculous). Oh and air it on a cable channel so it doesn’t require 2 hours of commercials to run on one of the major networks.

The first thing I would do is hold a special Oscar ceremony for categories like: Best Screenplay, Song, Musical Score, Makeup, Stunts, technical awards etc.. the previous day. This would save an hour. Then I would include comedy categories.

I don’t want to hear their political beliefs, causes, or problems. Just entertain us, thank us if you win and shut the hell up about all the non essential crap.

Its simple…they added an Animation category, now they need a Comedic category. I’m sorry, but comedy is art and it should be rewarded for greatness.

Why is there so much coverage of it? People are too wrapped up in what the stars are wearing or what they ate or what they smell like or if they shaved that day. Just show the damn awards on some cable channel, don’t waste network time. The mouth-breathers who watch the entire thing at home and root for movies and actors (first sign of a problem there, chief) can get their pathetic fix and feel like they are part of a crowd that would never accept them. Meanwhile, the rest of us aren’t inconvenienced with all the ridiculous coverage that is granted to a bunch of self-serving idiots who think patting each other on the back with a meaningless trophy is what the country is dying to see.
