Oscars: What’s your Best Picture?

The Oscar awards start at 8 p.m. Sunday, which means that sometime after most of us have dozed off Monday morning they will get around to giving the last award, for Best Picture.

Why wait? We’ll do our own Best Picture vote, right here and now, and we won’t limit it to the 5 nominees. Just tell us what you think the best movie of 2008 was and, if you want, why. You want to vote for “Kung Fu Panda” or “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan,” fine.

If you want a little help remembering what came out, here’s a good list, ordered by box office grosses.

My winner would be “Slumdog Millionaire.” I know, it has a lot of buzz that feels like overkill, but strip all that away, just look at the film itself, and man is that a great piece of moviemaking.

What do you think was the best movie of last year?

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (although Marley & Me was my favorite) out of those nominated, but I imagine Slumdog Millionaire will win.

Of the movies nominated, my pick would be “Slumdog Millionaire.” Great flick - very well done.

I am still baffled as to why “The Dark Knight” and “Wall-E” weren’t nominated. (“The Reader”????!! REALLY??! “Milk”?? Come on!). I’m all about indie movies, but it’s obvious that the Academy will not award movies that are considered mainstream. I can only think of “The Lord of the Rings” movies, “Forrest Gump”, and “Jerry Maguire” as the exception to the rule.

I have to wonder if “Slumdog Millionaire” were a Hollywood flick, rather than a Bollywood flick, would it be recieving the same attention? My guess is no. A good movie, but not best picture material - maybe best screenplay. “Milk” and “The reader” were both far better movies and both more deserving. If I had to pick one - I’d choose “The Reader”.

Here are my top 5 movies of 2008.

  1. Gran Torino
  2. Mama Mia
  3. Quantum of Solace
  4. Bolt
  5. Iron Man

These movies were fun and well made. Why do the Oscars have to be so pretentious and politically correct?

It is not even close. “Fireproof” was by far the best movie of 2008.

Alright! Fireproof, Bolt and Mamma Mia. Definitely not what you hear when the envelope is opened, but movies that are loved by some.
