Buckhead Backlot to reopen as Fork & Screen … and serve cocktails
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Buckhead Backlot, closed for several weeks for remodeling of its six screening rooms and kitchen, will re-open July 11 as the AMC Fork & Screen Buckhead.
Odd name, but the dinner-and-a-movie spot not only has new plush seating but will serve cocktails in addition to beer and wine. Admission will be limited to those 18 and older. Minors can enter only if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
In addition to food and drinks being served in screening rooms, the theater will have MacGuffins, a bar area with seating.
A sampling of the menu: burgers, wraps, grilled sandwiches, pizzettas, pasta, fried shrimp, appetizers and desserts.
A sampling of the cocktails: 16 specialty drinks, including margaritas, martinis, the requisite Cosmopolitan, and full bar selections.
The re-opening of the Fork & Screen follows the recent unveiling of the revamped, family-friendly Northlake Festival Movie Tavern in Tucker, which serves casual food and alcoholic beverages.
And another spot, Cinebistro, a dinner-and-a-movie theater from Birmingham-based Cobb Theaters, plans to open in 2009 in Brookhaven. It will cater to an upscale, adults-only crowd.
Do you like the revival of the one-stop dinner-and-a-movie concept? Do you plan to check out one or all of these places?

The dinner-and-a movie concept has long been a favorite of mine. While it may be pricey for date spot, at least you can have your cake and eat it too, all in the comfort of one location. I absolutely adored Buckhead Backlot, when I used to frequent. Glad to see it’s back with a little more flare.

I love the dinner and a movie concept, I just hope the food is much better at Fork & Screen than what it was at Backlot.

There will never be anything like the old Excelsior Mill. Draft beer with Mellow Mushroom pizza on surplus office chairs and tables. I’ve been to the Movie Tavern already. Nice concept with food no better than what I can warm-up out of my freezer.

I’m glad to see the Buckhead Backlot got remodeled. The last time I was there I was disgusted with the seating and to be honest the food was never very good. I love the idea of being able to enjoy a cocktail and have a bite to eat at the theater though so I am going to be checking this place out.

I hope they actually did some remodeling and not just threw up a couple gallons of paint. That place looked like the 1970’s threw up in it and then died and nobody cleaned up the carcass. The food was terrible and the employees were lazy asses who couldn’t give a rat’s ass. Crossing my fingers though, because it’s an excellent concept!!

To maddoxh: The Cinema N Drafthouse in Doraville closed a long, long time ago. In the early ’90s. It was a single screen coverted to the Drafthouse in 1985. Moviegoers loved that place a lot because people (including you) still talk about it.

I think a 6-year-old could have come up with a better, catchier name, but aside from that I’m glad the brew and view concept has come back to Buckhead.

I hope they make it nice but casual/affordable. The last thing we need is another glitzy Buckhead wannabe joint. The rich folks are going to stay home and watch movies in their media rooms anyway, so please cater to the rest of us.

I personally love the idea of seeing a movie far removed from screaming kids and chattering teens… but most adults aren’t much better these days, the food at the Movie Tavern was disappointing at best (not to mention the white wine margaritas?), and well, the movies aren’t all that good to begin with.
I think I can do all three things better at home.

I did the dinner and movie thing one time. The food was mediocre and having serving and wait people milling around detracted from the movie. The food did not make the movie a much better experince with all the distractions.

This is good news. Buckhead Backlot was one of the most mismanaged places I’ve ever been. Rude, unprofessional staff that didn’t get you your food until the movie was almost over. And they frequently talked in the back of the theatre. They acted like they had something better to do, when this was their chosen job - like the service you get at a McDonald’s.

And the pun is Fork & Screen = Pork & Bean(s) ?? I’m grasping here. In any case, I agree, a 6 year old coulda done a better job naming the place

I actually thought this spot was rather nice and actually surprise that the concept is really just catching out here. Out west and up north, it has been a concept used for awhile. Atlanta needs to have more spots like this. Regarding the foods, I thought it was ok….hell it is the movies not a five star restaurant. I thought that the food was comparable to Friday’s, Applebee’s, etc. I don’t frequent those spots

I’m another decent man that loves the dinner and a movie concept, but lacks a lady to take out.
I don’t understand all the hate on the food and decor. It’s a movie theater! I don’t go to the movies for the decor; that’s what a place like the Swan House is for. The chairs are comfortable; there’s only so many ways you can redo the tables to maximize space. And, the food… Not that bad. I was there to see Stop Loss about 3 months ago and thought the food was pretty good. I only had beer, wings, and fries… All three were better than the last time I went to Taco Mac and I saw a great movie to boot. Anyway, I was going expecting a movie. Not to be fed by people in loin cloths and simultaneously get fanned with palm leaves.

Wait, admission limited to 18 and over and then the next sentence says minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Which is it?
I hope the owners will make a trek to Austin, TX to the Alamo movie-house to see how this concept can really be done (i.e., real meals you can write home about instead of cheeze-wiz on stale nachos with $15 pitchers of flat Budweiser).

For a name how about - Dinner, Drinks and a Movie - Not catchy, but I think most people would somehow kind of figure out the concept. Why go cute when you have a winning idea. Heck “fork and screen” is not even fun to say like - “the supper cinema” But, I even liked the Backlot with all its flaws.

a] totally miss the Cinema ‘n Draft house…maybe this will be as good. b] the concept only works for comedies since it such a noisy set up to begin with. OK to bring back some oldies but goodies for this! c] I hope they keep it casual - for the same reason as [b] - I’m looking forward to giving it a try. d] DeCori - consider this your FOURTH acceptance for a date!

Look forward to trying this out. WOuld be nice if these places would pick one night per week (the same night), and show an old classic movie (pre 1970) for all the cinephiles out here. Maybe a host to intro the movie with some background on why it was important/popular when it was first released, and place it in the context of society at that time. Movies are markers of our society and its evo/devolutions….so there is some value to this idea.

Brings back wonderfully romantic memories of “The Excelsior Mill.” I had the first date with the love of my life there May 15, 1981. Since then I have been a fan of Dinner and a Movie fare. When given a choice, I will always chose one over a conventional theater. I am very happy to see MovieTaverns sprouting up all over. It is good to see the Adults only spots, but I hope that there are just as many “Family” oriented locations. Perhaps some of the Adult spots can have special times for families.

I love this idea. I have seen a few movie theaters around the country that are not only offering drinks and more upscale food choices, but reserved seating as well. I hope this places have reserved seating so I don’t have to wait in line for a movie premeire again. My favorite part of this concept by far is the adult only environment. It’s become unpleasant to go to the movies anymore with all of the teenagers running in and out of the movie.

Great idea, but I don’t think it’s going to do anything to make the movie experience in Atlanta more appealing. I no longer go to movies because of a specific demographic which always speaks on the cell phone during the feature. Why do they do this?

i think it is great.
i think with out some creative thinking we might live to see the movie theaters become extinct. so, what better way then be able to have a drink and dindin while watching a movie on the big screen.
plus, with the prices that they are charging for a movie….you should get a better experience. i just hope that they keep their food prices more in check with a restaurant instead of the insane snack bar prices.

I’ve always loved the concept - with two little ones at home, the ability to get dinner and a movie in a compressed time frame has great appeal for me and my wife. The Backlot turned us off several years ago - poor service, consistently bad job getting the food to us quickly. Plus, it had become a “chatty/giggly teenager” theater - thumbs down.
Movie Tavern has had very good service; ordering at the counter seems to make it quicker - two out of three on food quality for me (buffalo wrap and sliders good, philly not so good; my wife was happy with the pizza). Each time we’ve gotten our food by the end of the first preview, which is pretty good. Also - no twenty minutes of commercials, and a slightly cheaper ticket price are nice.
Good to see that we still have a variety in moviegoing experiences in Atlanta, between the Tavern, Lefont, and the Plaza. Looking forward to the Marietta Strand opening!

The old Doraville Cinema and Drafthouse-I remember taking many dates there. Good movies and food-loved the tables and chairs. Pretty comfy. Nachos and a brew-think they had some sandwiches and burgers too. Movies were good and the place was clean. And then the area turned into chambodia…

I remember the Cinema and Drafthouse, when it was located on North Druid Hills. It was a 2 Screen Cinema and very crowded, but the food and the service were great. There were 3 main cooks there, Stan, Montell and Suha. If you happen to look through the window into the kitchen, these guys really put on a show preparing the food. Somebody should find these guys and get them to open another Cinema and Drafthouse.
