Netflix suffers long website outtage

It’s 6:25 p.m.? Do you know where your Netflix is?

For about 11 hours today, the Internet’s DVD rental giant had the same message posted on its website: “The Netflix website is temporarily unavailable.”

That’s a long time for an online server to be down.

According to CNET’s News.com, which was able to contact Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey, the outage was “unanticipated” and “unplanned.” News.com quoted him as saying technical personnel “have been feverishly working on repairing the problem.”

The correction happened at about 9 p.m. Eastern time and the website became usable again.

More than 70 user comments about the outtage were posted so far at Hackingnetflix.com.

NetFlix has more than seven million subscribers.

Big deal.. So we all miss a few hours of updating our queue.. And some don’t get movies shipped until tomorrow morning.

We’ll live, it’s not the end of the world..

Yeah, I agree. It won’t affect my delivery much, so I’m not worried. These things happen. Netflix has a history of outstanding customer service so they’ll take it in stride. There used to be a time when this kind of thing wouldn’t even make the news.

I always forget to update my que until I mail the movies that I have watched back to Netflix. I put 2 in the mail yesterday and went to update my que and I couldn’t. It was a pain!
