They get down with ‘Soulja Boy’ in The Philippines

Remember the hundreds of Filipino prisoners dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”?

Well, now the orange-suited, confined men of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in The Philippines have a routine to “Soulja Boy” and MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This.”

Enjoy.

Did you know James Brown once saved Boston?

Georgia’s late, legendary soul singer James Brown will make an important appearance at the SXSW Film and Music Festival next week in Austin.

Brown is the subject of the documentary “The Night James Brown Saved Boston,” which will be screened as a work-in-progress on March 15. It’s expected to air on VH1 on April 5.

The documentary contains rare archival footage of the televised April 5, 1968 concert Brown gave in Boston in the wake of nationwide rioting after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

A trailer for the film begins simply with Brown singing classic utterings: “Baby, baby, baby. Baby, baby, baby!”

At the time, Boston officials had asked Brown if they could televise his concert in hopes the public would remain at home watching his show instead of going into the streets. It worked.

The film is directed by David Leaf (“The U.S. vs. John Lennon”).

Did you know of Brown’s historic concert in Boston? Will you watch the documentary on VH1 in April?

Are you ready for a G-rated college movie?

At least one new movie this weekend is out of the ordinary, if not extraordinary.

The title: “College Road Trip.” The costar: Martin Lawrence. Now, take a deep breath. The rating: G.

I can’t immediately think of any movie in the last couple of decades that’s been set on a college campus and been rated so family friendly.

“College Road Trip” is an attempt by Disney to take one of its TV stars — “That’s So Raven’s: Raven-Symone — and make her a big-screen celebrity. She plays a smart, with-it high school graduate who goes on a wacky trip with her dad (Lawrence) to sample potential college spots.

And why not? Disney’s already filming the “Hannah Montanna” movie in Nashville.

“College Road Trip” explores father-daughter issues, is filled with jokes (I cannot recall hearing a single cuss word) and is aimed at entertaining not only your pre-teen, but grandma, too.

Usually, G-rated movies are animated (“Ratatouille”) or of the documentary persuasion (“Arctic Tale”). A live-action, G-rated film is most often insipid and uninspired (think “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium”).

Will you and your family go see “College Road Trip”? How important are G-rated movies in your entertainment choices?
