Is there a funny moment in ‘First Sunday’?

“The Bucket List” may have finished first at the box office nationwide, but last weekend’s big money earner in metro Atlanta was “First Sunday.”

The church comedy with Ice Cube, Tracy Morgan and Loretta Devine raked in more than $700,000 here, finishing first and more than doubling the $329,000 earned by second place “Bucket List.”

That’s certainly no big surprise. African-American films always perform extremely well in Atlanta. For instance, “The Great Debaters” still has a spot in metro Atlanta’s Top 10 box office while nationwide last weekend Denzel Washington’s film ranked 14th.

“First Sunday” is a comedy somewhat in the vein of a Tyler Perry movie with raucous humor and over-the-top sentimentality.

I think the film worked only in spots. But one character really made me laugh. That was Katt Williams’s church choir director, especially when he was leading his group in song. The hymn was energetic and spiritual as he waved his arms in his otherworld of oddity.

Did you like “First Sunday”? What parts of the film were funny to you?

Haven’t seen it, but my teen wants to. I told her it does not look good enough to spend theatre prices on……….looks like the funniest parts are what you see on the trailer/commercial. Sounds better boot-legged to me!!

That has to be a classic!!! WTF????? I think we should respond, Mr. R., and let the AJC know exactly how much we appreciate their bullshyt!!!

It was very predictable! By going to see it, I obviously was intrigued by the premise of the film, but overall it was just alright.

I am hoping that Ice Cube will retire the “two-homeboy” concept and venture into something more profound. He is very capable of expanding into advanced roles with something worthy of portraying… depicting… expressing.

I must say that Katt Williams was absolutely hilarious!!! I wish he would have played Tracy Morgan’s part… he gets on my darn nerves; so annoying.

And yes, I am looking forward to more BLACK films.

I thought there were plenty of funny moments in First Sunday. They all involved Katt Williams and to a lesser extent, Ricky Smiley. Beyond that, the movie seemed to drag on a little bit. Regardless, I am glad to have been able to support the movie on opening weekend (unintentionally, but supported it nonetheless).

Jame, live up to what stereotype? And as for class, you wouldn’t have any if you owned a school!!! Bootleg is here, like it or not!!! Everything gets bootlegged, from music to movies!! Live with it! And for your info, class is knowing how to act when you aren’t suer how to react!!! Now go kick rocks!!!

Katt Williams were so HILARIOUS. His parts were most enjoyable. The whole theatre was rolling with laughter b/c of him. Had it not been for Katt Williams, I would’ve waited for the DVD b/c the movie was JUST AlRIGHT. I love good comedy and Katt Williams is good comedy, and for that reason, I didn’t mind paying the theatre price. Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan did alright, but Katt Williams gave us something to really laugh about.

Katt Williams was hilarious. Actually the movie was presented far differently from what it really was. I thought it was a “Friday” type movie when it dealt with more redeeming issues. It was pretty decent.

From what I seen of the trailer, Katt Williams has me in tears, he is sooooo funny! I do not think Tracy Morgan is funny at all. Katt is the best!

I saw the movie this weekend. The was not that funny and definitely not worth the $10 but I have to agree that were it not for Katt Williams, the movie would have been a bust. It dragged on and for a while I went to sleep. But I will continue to support my people regardless of what anyone else thinks or says, especially the critics.

I’m a white male. I think chris tucker is usually funny. Friday was hysterical! All about the Benjamins, hysterical!! Eddie Murphy? Hilarious, usually! Chappelle? Hysterical! But this movie I just don’t get. Nothing about the previews was even remotely amusing. Am I missing something? Also, what is the deal with Tyler Perry?!?! I don’t find that guy the least bit funny!! Do african americans appreciate Tyler Perry humor?? Am i just missing something??

No, Mark, you aren’t missing a thing. I’m black female and I think that Tyler Perry, Madea or whatever role he’s playing, is so overrated. Tyler’s latest movie (w/Janet) was a success as far as $$$ is concern, but he bragged so much about that movie before the it opened that I refused to go see it. As a star, director , producer, etc., of movies, he’s no Clint or Denzel. Toots his own horn too much.

Mark, thanks for asking that question about Tyler Perry…I usually love his movies, but watching the “House of Payne” is “paynefull” to say the least…My husband and I bought tickets to support the movie, but we didn’t go see it. I’m a black woman and am begging Hollywood and fellow African-American actors, directors, etc. to please expect more from your audience and us as a people. Stop making the “2 black homeboys trying to get over” movies and produce something with some substance, information, or general story line that will get us thinking…please!!!!

i took my fourteen year old and she laughed so much and so hard i stopped watching the movie to watch her laugh. she was too funny. it was ok but i would have rather seen it on video…the best part was the idea that there is hope for anyone who thinks life is hopeless and resort to extreme measures without thinking about the consequences…if more people were forgiving like the church hostages, we might have more people rethinking their lives and changing to become better people.

The comedy was hillarious, but the point of the movie was two men finding a new way to face the challenges in their lives. I found the movie funny and Olivia Colle along with Loretta Devine, well you know, they evoke love and a pure honesty in whatever they do. It was good see a movie that reflected how Black men could turn their lives around, from what would have been a robbery to become inspirations to others.

Thanks Star and Brown’s Girl, I thought maybe I just didn’t understand the humor. Like I said, I find a lot of African American comedians very funny (that scene with Mike Epps in All About the Benjamins, when he is in the convenient store?? I thought I was going to wet my pants!!) Also, am I missing something with the Wayans Bros?? I just don’t see what apparently a lot of other people do see!! In living color was one of the funniest shows on t.v. and I still laugh my a** off when I catch old re-runs!! But Marlon and Shawn Wayans, to me, just aren’t funny at all!!

I have not seen “First Sunday”, but I do agree that it would behoove the black filmmakers to provide movies of better substance than the Friday’s, Gangsters and all. Mark,I do however like comedy and find Tyler Perry’s play’s hilarious. Madea is a classic like Lucy. My taste for comedy is very discriminating. Some supposed comedy is sheer stupidity, like Jim Carrey, whom I depise. Perhaps we just like our own better!!

I’m a white female and my sister and I were the only white people in the theatre this weekend when we went to see this movie. Why did we go? Cause we like Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan. We like movies like “Friday” and “Next Friday” ‘cause they’re funny. Period! We tend to like slapstick-style comedy, whether it’s “Fawlty Towers” or “Undercover Brother.” We also like Tyler Perry’s movies because they are about real life and the struggles people face, regardless of their color. (And Madea is classic!) “First Sunday” was surprisingly heartwarming. Katt Williams definitely stole the show. He was high-larious and the movie wouldn’t have been the same without him. I thought the transformation that Ice Cube took on—going from I’m-not-a-criminal-anymore to downright scary in the hostage scenes with the gun were unnerving. And Tracy Morgan’s character’s “conversion” was touching. Hey, it wasn’t anywhere near Britney Spears’s movie “Crossroads,” so it’s just fine in my book!

Mark - Why do you feel the need to question what is or isn’t funny regarding African-American movies? Why is this relevant? Either you find a movie funny or you don’t. I think Napeleon Dynamite is HILARIOUS but my roommate thinks it’s the dumbest movie ever. We both love Friday and Friday After Next. So we like a lot of the same things but then some things we don’t. That’s what makes us as a HUMAN race special, we are all differnt. What I might think is hilarious, you may not. Just enjoy what you enjoy and stop questioning “us” like we are supposed to answer for all black folks. People like you annoy the crap out of me. Dee

Maybe Mark did not take a deeper look at the movie, let’s give him a break. Personally I find Carol Burnett funny until this day, but even comedians have a point to their comedy. Even though most comedians say there just trying to be funny I truly believe they are still trying to convey a positive message. Another example of a comedian trying to convey a point in a movie is Norbit, not all people found it funny, but the movie gave you a different view on some subjects.

I was going to wait to see it on DVD, but friends talked me into it. The movie was just “OK”, it got a few chuckles out of me. I was expecting silly b/c of Tracy Morgan, but Cube kinda reeled him in. Katt Williams made the movie, I love him as a comedian and actor. I just want to know, what happened to Rickey Smiley?!? He disappeared !!!

The movie was really good. Kat Williams was very hilarious. I would love to see him in more films. He played the choir director to a T. I love a good comedy and I am glad I support our black film makers. Over all Ice Cube and Tracey Morgan did a great job. The movie had a great plot. It’s good to have a black movie available where we can take our children.

**Bob(the blog’s editor),

I hate to be the one that tells you this, but that type of choir performance happens in Black churches all over America, every Sunday. Also just a F.Y.I. to you, back in the day all the “great” singers came from the church. Today’s singers, excuse me, rapper come from da hood and the great singers come from ………. they aren’t any.**

Star & Brown’s Girl - I’m trying to understand how you talk about a movie neither of you bothered to go see. Not only did you boycott Tyler Perry but you also boycotted all the other African-American actors and actresses in the movie and all the people who worked behind the scenes. It was bigger than your own personal opinions about Tyler Perry. The movie wasn’t about thugs, guns, or sex, it was about love and marriage. It was a good movie and had you taken the time to see it you might know that.

I choose not the respond the Bob regarding his “review”. It was clearly written out of ignorance and despiration. I commend all of those who commented on the moral behind the story. Clearly you know and understand how to think outside of the box.
If you’ve ever been a church where the choir is “cuttin up” you would have seen the choir director doing his or her thing directing. Watch Bobby Jones Gospel on BET or the Celebration of Gospel on BET. It’s nothing new. No one is standing around singing Hymns out of a book. How boring is that?

THe movie was garbage. It was not funny at all. If it had not been for my son there I would have went to sleep. Kat Williams had one or two funny moments, but overall I give the movie a 3 out of 10
