Upcoming movies are either merry or not so bright

I can admit it. I like sad, dark movies. Always have. But aren’t the Christmas holidays a time for joy and kindness and happy songs?

Well, not so much at the movies this season. We’ve already had “No Country for Old Men,” which may be the best movie of the year but one that treks in bullets and blood. And there’s “Atonement” — another wonderful film but one steeped in quite a bit of sadness.

So I’m here to tell you there’s not much feel-good cinema on the horizon. And if you gather the family and decide to go see a movie, here are your options once Christmas Day arrives:

FOR HAPPY TIMES

“Alvin and the Chipmunks” — Little kids will love it.

“Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” — So silly it hurts.

“The Great Debaters” — It’s not all fun and games, but it means to be uplifting.

“Juno” — If teen pregnancy can be funny, this is a riot.

“National Treasure: Book of Secrets” — More from the same adventure vault.

FOR SAD BUT PERHAPS FULFILLING TIMES

“I am Legend” — Will Smith vs. creepy crawlers.

“The Kite Runner” — Dark days in Afghanistan.

“Charlie Wilson’s War” — More dark days in Afghanistan.

“The Water Horse” — If E.T. could swim and dodge exploding bombs.

“Sweeney Todd” — Blood and human meat pies. Yum?

“Starting Out in the Evening” — Old age and youth don’t always mix.

“Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” — Two kinds of monsters for the price of one.

“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” — Being paralyzed after a massive stroke. Good times.

“The Savages” — Sibling arguments, Alzheimer’s and nursing homes. Sounds like Christmas.

Are you ready for Christmas with the Jingle Cats?

Cats are crazy. I know because one has decided against all my unfriendliness to take up residence at my house. Which brings us to “JINGLE CATS” — a video of questionable if not blurred imagery but one that excels in the distinctive, melodic joy of Christmas catdom.

Enjoy. Or tolerate.
