See the major Oscar contender ‘Atonement’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here’s my indubitable list of what matters most among new movies this weekend:
1. “Atonement” — I’d give it 3-1 odds right now for Oscar’s best picture.
2. “The Golden Compass” — Certainly watchable, but if it slowed down a bit and gave me more about the characters I’d like it better.
3. “Romance and Cigarettes” — It pretty much lost me when the garbage men hopped off their truck and started singing and dancing in the street.
4. “Freshman Orientation” — A straight guy pretends to be gay to get a girl. In other words, this movie pretends to be “Tootsie.” Guess which movie was better.
5. “Noelle” — I don’t have a problem with the decidedly Christian theme. I have a problem with the wooden acting.
6. “O Jerusalem” — I really shouldn’t say anything because I was so bored I got up and walked out.

What odds would you give No Country For Old Men?

What odds would you give No Country For Old Men? Atonement was one of my favorite novels of the last 10 years, but I’m not at all sure how well it’ll translate to the screen.

At this point, Tom, I’d give “No Country for Old Men” 2-1 odds.
