Watching T.I. in ‘American Gangster’

In a pivotal moment in “American Gangster,” Atlanta rapper T.I., who plays a promising baseball pitcher, tells his drug overlord uncle, played by Denzel Washington, why he wants to abandon sports: “I want what you got, Uncle Frank. I wanna be you.”
The scene plays somewhat oddly now in the wake of T.I.’s weekend arrest on federal charges of possessing illegal weapons, including machine guns. “American Gangster” opens in theaters nationwide on Nov. 2.
In the film, T.I. — whose screen credit is listed as Tip Harris (his real name is Clifford Harris Jr.) — plays the unnamed nephew of Washington’s character, Frank Lucas, the real-life New York kingpin who in the 1970s became the most powerful drug pusher in the city.
“Gangster” is a big film — it features not only Washington but fellow Oscar winner Russell Crowe as the detective investigating him — and a major Academy Awards contender with a running time of 157 minutes. T.I.’s part, though, is rather small. He appears in a handful of scenes with minimal lines.
He sits at Thanksgiving dinner with Washington, is seen playing catch at a family gathering and, later in the film, appears as part of Lucas’ organized crime family.
Here are other aspects of “American Gangster” that audiences will likely be talking about after the film opens:
Actor vs. actor: Washington and Crowe don’t have a scene together until late in the film. But when they meet, sparks fly. Both actors employ testosterone-fueled acting to their advantage.
The coffee cups: Two small paper cups of java are the main items on a table separating the two main actors when they finally meet. Both are used by the actors with dramatic flair to enhance the scene.
The cast: It’s big and full of recognizable faces — Ruby Dee as Lucas’ mother, Chiwetel Ejiofor as a Lucas relative, Armand Assante as a Mafia member, Josh Brolin as a corrupt cop and Ted Levine (“The Silence of the Lambs”) as a police official. Others in the film include Joe Morton, Cuba Gooding Jr., RZA, Idris Elba and Carla Gugino.
The brutality: Washington has at least two gruesome scenes. The first involves a street assassination by gunfire. In the second, he uses part of a grand piano like Robert De Niro used a baseball bat in “The Untouchables” to pummel an out-of-line associate.
The fur: At a boxing match, Washington shows up in chinchilla coat and hat, gifts from his character’s Puerto Rican girlfriend. It gets him noticed and his response in what he does with the coat is memorable.

This young man wanted to be a gangster just like JAy Z putting out that album that is a sign of immaturatiy and young me who have not grown up yet and keep in mind this is not the 70’s this is the year 2007 and Feds will take you down in a minute. They found 6 guns in TI bedroom closet per the news and he is also a conviceted felon and he is not to posses and firearms and his attorney even said he did not know he was a convicted felon and had previous charges for firearm possesion and what in the world was he going to do with a machine gun and a silencer o my gosh!! I would not be surprised if they deny him bail and his carrer you mind as well say is over most likely. he probably will get some time the evidence is to strong against him and his past does not help at all!!!

It irritates me to no end to see them make millions, only to turn around and throw it away being stupid. And most of the time, these youngsters have never attempted to do anything constructive, or to help the less fortunate, can you say CHARITABLE WORKS?!!!! So now they’ll spend all that and then some defending their stupid choices. What a waste!!!!

Huh, what does Jay-Z’s album title have to do with this guy being arrested? Music, movies, and other forms of entertainment are just forms of art and expression - the problems comes when the artists try and live out the things they express in their art. Don’t get it confused, these men are adults and fully understand what they are doing so you can’t blame the art form because the MAJORITY of artists don’t participate in the criminal activities they they may talk about or portray.

BCR, I’m not enjoying this at all. I’ve known plenty of young men and women who ended up in the system, some for life, because they were poor, struggling, and they made some mistakes. TI is a millionaire, yet he wants to hang on to his street cred by playing tough. What do you know about gun laws? Do you know that having a silencer is usually an automatic 2 years? God help you if you’re a felon with a machine gun.

It can’t really be about the movie, all any of the rest of us know is what we’ve seen in the previews. But it does kind of appear that TI had aspirations of being the 2007 version of Frank Lucas! Maybe he and Vick will be in the same federal pen and can do some rap together! Vick is gonna need a new career and some quick cash and rap certainly doesn’t require you to be able to carry a tune! And for the next few years TI will only be writing, NOT performing!

O.K. What I am about to say will surely offend some(do I care? Nope.) I am old school, born in mid 50s(1956 to be exact)You can say I been around a minute, maybe two. As a kid back in the hood(brooklyn, NY) I watched many Gangster movies. John Dillinger, Baby Faced Nelson, Al Capone, Bonnie and Clyde. all on black and white TV. The 30s especially in Chicargo and NYC was full of mobsters, REAL Gangsters. complete with long dress coats, fadora(hats) and even had on suits with ties. The gansters I saw on TV were real life dangerous men who generally lived by the gun(Machine Gun-Kelly) and died by the gun with occassionally a few dying in Fed prison(Capone(from V.D) Although I enjoyed watching these characters, in no way shape orform did I want to emulate, grow up to be, or even pretend to be one. These were the true real tough guys. However, my generation(the 60s and early 70s atleast most of us, would rather play Batman and Robin vs the Green Hornet and Kato. Those were our heroes or whom we liked. of course there were so-called bad boys and girls of the block who never went to school joined gangs and many ended up dead or in prison. This wasent the route myself and many others found appealing. Todays pants hanging down, crotch grabbing wanna be’s in no way shape or form are gangsters so quit flattering yourselves. Your not tough. The folks I noted above, Capone, Baby-face, Dillinger..those were GANGSTERS, and had the money and guns to prove it and dressed the part. These little punks today are exactly that. I see no glory in losing everything I worked for. and returning to the same streets I fought so hard to escape. there is no glory in that. Very sad.

Ok some argue he bought them for protection..why silencers? a machine gun? so in that case if he got in a beef with someone. he would not care how many innocent folks get hit with his machine gun spraying bullets everywhere hitting everyone. Real smart TI. Well atleast after the feds get done with him. his least worry will be a drive by. more like a cell with bars. he will be quite safe then.

For all of you that’s hating on T.I.P., when GOD created us he made us all imperfect, so that mean we’re entitle to making mistakes. And who are u all? GOD now? PASSING JUDGEMENT on someone you all don’t know; don’t know that mans motive, Mr. C.Harris is INNOCENT until proven guilty! Mark the RACIST CRACKER; you all (WHITE PEOPLE) been RAPING YOUR OWN KIDS AND ANIMALS, KILLING YOUR PARENTS, AND COMMITTING SUICIDE!!!
