Just to get off Oscars for a sec…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The 1964 historical epic, BECKET, starring Peter O’Toole and Richard Burton, is being re-released in theaters (Feb 9 at Landmark’s Midtown Art in Atl.), Shortly thereafter it comes out on DVD (it’s been around on VHS for years) The movie is about Henry II and his best friend, Thomas Becket, whom he made archbishop, hoping to thereby control England’s clergy and the Church. Things got messy. I’m wondering…
1) Has anyone seen BECKET?? If so, any comments, memories?
2) Fess up…how many of you rent the movie instead of reading the book/play for classroom assignments?
3)What titles would you like to see on DVD that currently aren’t? And why?

1) I have seen “Becket”, many years ago on cable. I thought it was a very good film, although I couldn’t escape being reminded that both O’Toole and Burton are actors famous for playing themselves in all their movies. I’m glad to hear it will be in theatres; hopefully my schedule will allow me to see it again.
2) It has been many years since I had “classroom assignments”, but I admit to doing a little internet cheating in lieu of completing the occasional bookclub selection (my wife and I host a monthly non-fiction bookclub in Roswell). We recently discussed “The Corporation”, which was a nonfiction book before it was a documentary. Saw the movie; never read the book! :(
3) I think it’s a crime that “At Play in the Fields of the Lord” has never made it to DVD! I saw it many years ago on VHS (or maybe it was cable?), and it’s a fantastic film. Based on the novel by Peter Matthiessen (who also wrote the nonfiction “The Snow Leopard”), it’s set in Amazonia and stars Tom Berenger, Aidan Quinn, John Lithgow, Kathy Bates, Darryl Hannah - and Tom Waits! I cannot for the life of me figure out why this movie isn’t already on DVD. Great performances by an ensemble cast, beautifully shot, and deeply philosophical.

1.) No
2.) N/A
3.) Ski Patrol. That’s right, Ski Patrol. That brilliant late eighties comedy starring Martin Mull and a guy that looks like George Lopez. So unfunny that it’s hilarious.

I think Disney’s “Song of the South” should be released on DVD. It was a wonderful movie, granted it takes place during the Old SOuth’s slavery era, but that is really not the theme…It is simply the Brer Rabbit fables…Truly a classis…
