Sure, Johnny always seemed an odd fit as Oscars host but who else could crack jokes (and get away with it?!) about the hostage crisis in Iran from 1979? “It’s Day 161 of the Oscar telecast. And President Carter is currently working on a plan for your release.” In his own way, Carson had as much edge in his time as Rock does tonight. Plus, there weren’t 53 people all huddled in the control booth, sweating over the five-second delay dump button either.
