the first REAL gossipy moment!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Or we could just be incredibly bored. None the less, “Best Supporting Actress” winner Renee Zellweger did not, repeat did not thank her White Stripes boyfriend Jack White during her acceptance speech. Nor is he sitting with her or anywhere that Buzz has been able to see. It’s not like he was her “Cold Mountain” co-star and on-screen love interest or anything. Not sure why she thanked “Cold Mountain” author Charles Frazier. After all, her Oscar-winning character was African-American until Miramax cut Frazier a honking HUGE check. And don’t you love the guy in the control booth who put the camera on Nicole Kidman the entire time Renee was thanking Nicole’s ex, Tom Cruise? You’d have to be an Oscar-winning actress to fake that smile Nicole was sporting. Oh, wait. Do over.Permalink | Comments (5) | Categories: Oscars 2005

Word on the street and in what-once-was-indie-rock-but-is-no-more circles is that the two have split. That might account for the absence. But hey, who knows.

Oh yea, when they showed Nicole Kidman while Renee was thanking Tom Cruise, you could see that the smile became fixed.

It is not mentioned anywhere in the book (that I noticed)that Ruby is african-american and the context doesn’t seem to imply that either. Not a slam, just wondering if this is something Frazier himself might have asserted.

I read the book, and I was under no impression that Ruby was African-American.

Ruby in Cold Mountain is NOT African-American. She’s a poor white mountain girl who’s had to fend for herself her entire life. Unfortunately African American women in the South at that time were not allowed the freedom to roam about and choose whose house they wanted to show up at to “help”. What’s your beef with Zellweger’s portrayal anyway? I don’t like her at all, but she won me over with Ruby, and she deserved that award.
