10/27: David Archuleta on Q100

I checked out David Archuleta and his appearance at Q100, where they created a rather convoluted plan to surprise three big fans of his. They gave the impression to the fans that Archuleta was on the phone and the one who had the best Archuleta fan story was going to Houston to see him at a concert there.

But he was actually in an office down the hall. The trio were kept in the dark (yes, even their cels were temporarily confiscated in case friends clued them in on the ruse.). Once they were done with their pleas, the Bert Show came up with a cockamamie “the video camera didn’t work, we need to re-do your pleas” excuse.

So one by one, each woman was placed at the mike to repeat their spiel. Archie, now hidden behind a green curtain, would sneak out and catch them from behind and shock them. The best was Karin Carlson’s reaction. Watch her voice go up an octave!

The other two fans were Lynn Slocum, a substitute teacher, and Kathleen Horgan (below in video), a Georgia State student who is friends with Rebecca Terry, who is buds with Michael Johns.

“I’m freaking gullible,” Horgan said afterwards. “It was a really fun. I’m really glad I did it. The embarrassment will pay off!”

The fans all said they are fans because of his music and his always nice persona but since he’s only 17, it has nothing to do with anything more, so to speak.

Archuleta’s album comes out November 11. He is also appearing December 17 at rival Star 94’s Jingle Jam. (This Q100 in studio was a way to make sure the label keeps both stations happy.)

david-archuleta-smile-2.jpg

The smile that has melted many an Archie’s Angel.

jeff-archuleta.jpg

Although Jeff Archuleta tries to stay out of the limelight, Bert Weiss convinced him to go on mike and refute his reputation as an overbearing stage dad. “When David had that one week he forgot the lyrics, the tabloids wanted to make a reason why that happened. I became the scapegoat. It just kind of mushroomed from there. We weren’t allowed to defend ourselves.” Archuleta said he wasn’t even aware of the issue until near the end of the competition when reporters began asking him about it. “That’s all they wanted to talk about,” he said.

archuleta-cake.jpg

Here’s a cake given to one of the fans, Karin Carlson of Mableton.

rodney-archuleta.jpg

Archuleta was listening to a song while Jeff Dauler snapped this photo. I just have my dorky headphones around my neck.

Archuleta, during the Q100 interview, noted how he had been a lighting guy at the local amphitheatre before he decided to try out for “Idol.” “It was a good choice in the end definitely,” he said. He hates seeing himself on TV, refuses to do so, never watched a full episode of “Idol.” He doesn’t read the Web so he’ll never see this blog. He’d go into medicine if the music thang doesn’t work out.

Hey, why is Danny Bonaduce’s picture in this blog entry?

Glad to see that they at least allowed you to approach Archie - good picture of the two of you.

AWWWWW! It’s Rodney with Archie!!!! He seems like a good kid!

I didn’t hear the interview this morning but I’m sure Archie was his usual charming, if somewhat inarticulate, self.

Deirdre now ducks her head under the desk to avoid the onslaught from his fans.

Well, Kudos to Q100. Guys, you are really funny and I am looking for this kind of interviews. Very natural and with surprises. I can’t stop laughing. This was ingenious and the surprise (David himself) was like the cherry on the cake. The fans were awesome and David, you are lucky to have such hard core fans. I know he is very young and all the life in front of him to make a great musical career. For 17 he impressed me with his voice and it’s great to see that this celebrity does not affect him at all.

Of course they are nice Deirdre, because David inspires them. He is a cherry on the cake, a breath of fresh air, a work of art in progress. I just can’t come to grip with the soulfully pure goodness that comprises Davis, oh I’m sorry I mean ‘he who shall not be named for I am not worthy.’

I still don’t get why Danny Bonaduce was there. I loved that guy in the Partridge Family. That Danny Partridge was such a crack up.

Excellent interview. The reactions were priceless. Whoops. That would be David who is priceless. He’s an amazing talent with an exquisite, soaring, passionate voice, and as endearing and gorgeous a human being as God ever made.

He has me listening to music again after a 20 year lapse. I’ve never been a fan of anyone in my life, but I am over the moon for this guy. I’ve travelled over 7,200 miles to see him sing three times.

He’ll be HUGE and I will be at his back FOREVER.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

October 27, 2008 4:38 PM | Link to this

Karen. I’m not being facetious — i agree that music for the last 20 years has been lacking in MANY ways, at least in the pop/mainstream genre; but what about other forms of music? did you give it ALL up??? and I’m sorry… i find it hard to believe that someone who has given up music for 20 years finds li’l Archie that fabulous that she’d travel 7200 miles JUST to see him sing. either you are not affected by this economy, you are retired and relatively well-to-do, or you’re just well… something. Not sure what! I’m not dissin’ you… I’m just expressing my utter amazement at the level of commitment you’d make to a teenager you don’t even know personally (or DO you know him, i.e., family, friend of family, teacher, etc., and thus the extra level of support?), when you must be in at LEAST your late 30s, if not 40 plus.

well. pretty amazing, that.

I feel the need to post this in defense of Karen since I flew 4600 of those miles with her. She had personal circumstances that truly did take her entire attention. Even a 17 year old can be a catalyst for change.

As to my excuse for going so far to hear David Archuleta sing? I’m one of those retired people. Those of us who have heard David sing in person know the charisma he projects on stage. The rest of the concert was fun too.

Most of us are judged by our actions and our words. No one can know or fully understand our inner thoughts or our personal motivations.

So Karen…from a strictly action/word point of view… “He’ll be HUGE and I will be at his back FOREVER.”…you’re coming across as a little obsessed and(considering that he’s only 17)kinda icky.

October 27, 2008 6:24 PM | Link to this

this was one of the best interviews yet, very fun and a great surprise.. I never understood anyone that could put down a 17 year old, but thank goodness when they see the light after meeting him. I loved both reactions, looking forward to the 3rd video.. Don’t ever feel you have to make excuses for being a fan and getting a little excited about meeting David, I am a mom of 3 and a wife and our whole family loves and supports David in his career.. he is an inspiration to us.

By linny@home

Karen, bianca, please understand, we try to approach these things with some humor, sometimes a bit caustic in nature… we’ve been lambasted so often for being “haters” simply because some of us are not Archie fanatics… but mostly we’ve said that we appreciate his talent, but wonder if he’s too young for this “game”… never saying that he’s a bad person or any such… sometimes we really ARE amazed at the outpouring of adulation and adoration for a 17 year old lad; but then, some of us were equally baffled by the adoration and adulation poured out for Clay. Thank you for your input, bianca, your level-headed and moderate response and slight rebuke were well done and appreciated, at least by me… i get tired of someone calling me names simply because i have a differing opinion!!! and D’s right… the closing lines of Karen’s post were a little strong, to my way of thinking, for someone so much older than the talented lad that DA is.

y’all have a great night, now hear?!

It was a good interview. David seemed to enjoy that. Some people don’t get him simply because he is so young. People who get him appreciate his musical talent and potentials regardless of age. Among people who have heard him, 95% people admit his singing ability. But his vocal talent and good voice are just part of who he is musically. Something that sets apart David from the rest is his ability to pick out potential hit songs. He also has a heck of musical taste. His fans can’t keep up with the variety of his musical taste (ex. Amazon playlist). Just like what a DJ said in one of his interviews, he has a 30 year old musical soul trapped in a 17 year old body. His CD will show various genres, and rumors are that songs are hip and contemporary.

Is David a young singer with a nice voice or a cult leader? Because I’m getting a real “Jim Jones Follower” vibe from some of his fans. The stuff about being behind him forever, and how he’s inspired you to love music, lose weight, find God, learn to knit, take up meditation, climb Mt. Everest, and so forth, is laying it on a bit thick and, frankly, it’s creepy to those outside the cult.

Alot of Archie fans on here. I will have to agree that some have gone overboard, but to each his own.

On the JHud family, I hope and pray that whom ever took the lifes of her mother, brother and 7 year old nephew, suffer in hell. There are no words that can really comfort the family, but may they know that God will give them the comfort, strength and courage they will need to get through this tragedy.

Who is leaving DWTS tonight? I say either Cloris/Corey or Susan/Tony. Hopefully, we have seem enough of Cloris.

Heather, you’ve expressed how some of us have felt… sometimes it’s almost overwhelming. I appreciate a good voice, but I’m not rearranging my life to follow a freaking 17-year-old (or any other age for that matter) around the country to hear him warble. Heck I wouldn’t have even done that to see Paul Newman… [ok ok i’m trying to be humorous here!] Let’s just say, I can’t see David Archuletta being the new Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead… let’s see….”DeadHeads”…. “ArchieHeads” just doesn’t quite measure up…

Exactly, Nana, Deirdre, you, along with JT, have expressed what I think any sane adult would be feeling… and Heather expressed it well also. It’s just not “right” for an adult to be so enthralled by a youngster that they’d go traipsing around the country like a groupie!!!

I have a good grasp of it now, but I’m not as nice as you. I try to be, but once I reach a breaking point then that is it. I try to be a forgiving person, but what applies here is the old adage “fool me once shame on you, fool me…” dozens of times shame on me. To be honest I think the breaking point was the J. Hudson issue, I throw that out there for those keeping score at home.

So what is Archie up to today? He’s the cherry on the cake you know.

Actually, the Archie crowd, with only a couple of exceptions, has been relatively nice this time…unlike the Claymates, the Fantasia folk or the Diana denizens who are almost always a little……testy. :-)

The “fray” today hasn’t been about Archie at all…unless I missed something earlier.

Don’t think I need to lighten up. Testy can only be construed as its true meaning, which is: Irritable or touchy. I don’t know of any other meaning of the word. Please, nuff already!!!!!!!

I have hesitated commenting on this, but here goes. Although I do not personally know Karen, I know of her circumstances via other forums. Suffice it to say I’m certain most of you would be red-faced with embarrassment for making fun of her if you were familiar with her circumstances. It is not my place to reveal what those are. However, as Bianca noted above, they have required her full attention for these past twenty years, and I’ll add that they have involved a great deal of self-sacrifice on her part. It is not for us to judge what would or should bring joy into her life after such a long drought. I know you guys like to have fun here, but believe me when I say this is one time when you shouldn’t have it at someone else’s expense.

Katheryn…I don’t believe I saw ANYONE “making fun” of Karen. What we were commenting on was the unbridled devotion that Karen seems to have for Archie. My personal feeling is that this poor boy would rather not be her savior or her reason for living…that, in and of itself, would put way too much responsibility on his very young shoulders.

As I said before…we cannot know the inner workings of someone’s mind. We can only respond to a person based on their actions and words. Many of us here saw Karen’s words and her self-described actions as a little over the top.

If we had had the same response to a Clay fan or a Fantasia fan, would it have sounded like “making fun” to you or would you have agreed, not knowing that person’s personal history, that we were probably making some good points?

Karen may have absolutely valid reasons for following this young man around the country but that doesn’t mean that it’s a normal response.

So…I feel for Karen and whatever her “circumstances” are but I’m not going to be red-faced with embarrassment about anything that anyone has said here based on what she said.

And BTW, Karen isn’t the only person around here who has lived with a great deal of self-sacrifice.

Katheryn can I point out that this is the internet? Not only that but this is a blog where opinions are tossed shared. Some of those opinions may be about you, or about someone you admire. If you or others can’t handle seeing those opinions, then the “Comments” link should not be clicked on. This isn’t the dark underbelly of the web, but with the ease at which people can comment it also is not a place filled with ponies and rainbows.

The place is kept semi-clean by the powers that be, but comment at your own risk.

Deirdre: You’re correct in saying that we cannot know the inner workings of someone’s mind, and yet several of the comments I read above suggest that some of you have Karen all figured out. For example:

JTesia: “Karen, I sense a restraining order in your near future. Get help. Seriously.”

Deirdre: “Karen/Stalker! David…beware!”

Heather: “Is David a young singer with a nice voice or a cult leader? Because I’m getting a real ‘Jim Jones Follower’ vibe from some of his fans”

Nana: “IMO it is kinda sick for a 40 y/o to be fanning after a 17 y/o.”

I guess I was being charitable when I thought you guys were just having fun at her expense. Oh well.

Katheryn…I refer you to JTesla’s comment at 4:42pm.

Your friend seems(from her comment, which was obsessive)to be putting all her happiness eggs into the Archie basket. Not only is that kinda sad but it’s dangerous for her well-being. If indeed, she only sees Archie in the light at the end of her tunnel, she is headed for disaster. Having this boy bring her happiness from listening to his music is one thing…chasing him around the country is something else.

“if it makes her happy” is enabling!

Deirdre takes off her Dr Phil mask and says, Seriously, if you want to help this woman who you obviously care about, help her find other outlets.

I don’t have fun at the expense of others, I’m just a jerk. Everyone already knew that so I can’t say that I’ve been called out on it.

This is the point where Linny or Deirdre come in and yet again restates the message about words being misunderstood on the internet. Maybe it’s due to the lack of a connection. You can’t see the person smile or hear how serious they are; instead you read into words things that perhaps the writer did not intend. Personally I read ‘crazy’, but maybe you should refer to the first sentence of this post one more time.

With all that said I’d happily welcome Karen, Bianca, and all the Archie fanatics back. I much better at not commenting too quickly in this thread, I’ll do better next time ;)

The Dr. Phil reference is so appropriate here because of the near clinical analysis a few of you have undertaken based on a few sentences.

Yes, this is the internet. (Thanks, by the way, for the reminder.) However, I try to refrain from making comments I would feel uncomfortable making face to face. It seems that with the anonymity the internet provides, a certain degree of courtesy and common sense gets tossed aside.

I leave here feeling a bit sad. I wish now I had never read any comments posted. Funny thing is they appeared automatically together with Rodney Ho’s story in the link I clicked on to come to this site. (I did not purposely open the comment section.) I rarely participate in this type of back and forth exchange in what is for me uncharted waters. This is a good policy I’m thinking.

OK..if I told people on this blog that I stand on my head for 5 hours every day to celebrate my affection for William Hung…I’d expect a LOT of comments about what an idiot I am.

A woman, who we don’t know anything about, comes on and tells us that she’s traveled 7200 miles to see Archie and we’re suppose to applaud that????

If you display your fan-aticism for all to see…there are bound to be consequences!

I am sticking my neck out to make a comment about your comments. I come here once in a while when you write about David. There is no doubt that a lot of his fans are really fanatic. I read several AI blogs and it seems like the Cook fans can be bad as well. Maybe it is the nature of seeing someone every week on tv and then following them through the internet on tour.

I can see that many of your comments are snarky and cynical. I can also see that you don’t “get” David Archuleta. That is ok.

I visit the fan boards and people do see so much more than a 17 year old kid in him. Some people are definitely overboard. I am a highly educated person who has never been a fan of anyone and my pull to him puzzles me as well, but I work hard to be sure it doesn’t go overboard.

It sounds like you guys have seen this for years (Clay and others from AI), and you see it fade in time, so it probably seems like just another group of crazy fans. You will surely laugh at this, but many see him as being similar to a young elvis. If you go back and read comments made about Elvis when young, they were similar. It is amazing to me how many people change their mind about David when they meet him in person and hear him sing live. Time will tell if David will last. I think he will, but be assured that although I know you were being snarky when you said something about a James Jones Cult, there is a big difference. David himself doesn’t understand the intense dedication fans have for him, and he asks nothing from anyone. He just wants to sing.

sigh Luci hates me! :-(

Just a friendly warning, Luci…sticking up for flats(as I did a few years ago) will land you in a world of trouble.

Linda, thanks for the insight into Archie fans. I appreciate your thoughtful explanation of the David phenomenon. I find him to be exceptionally talented and sweet. A really good kid who may or may not find a lot of success in the future.

Yes, those of us who inhabit this blog on a regular basis have learned from experience not to get too friendly when fans of a specific Idol show up to extol the virtues of their favored one. We have been screamed at, called names, and practically kicked in the virtual teeth(all to our amusement) by people insulted because we dare to get snarky about “the revered one”. Perhaps we should put up a warning sign that we don’t take it all that seriously except during the season when we fight amongst ourselves about who will win.

We always welcome newcomers who like the show itself even more than the individual singers. We are fans of the SHOW. Rodney keeps us up to date on all the Idols and a tries his darndest to keep us in line. Mostly he’s successful! :-)

Thnaks Deirdre for your nice reply. Being a fan of the show is great. It sure takes a lot less time than intensely following an individual. Next season will be interesting with the new judge, Kara. David speaks very highly of her talent and “spunk” (he called it in an interview today). He even said she might give Simon a run for her money.

SOMEbody needs to give Simon a run for his money!

Sorry if our opinions insult some fans…we just don’t get that into the individuals.

Linda, thanks again for the chat. It’s always nice to meet new people who are willing to see more than JUST their favorite Idol. Hope you’ll stop by and chat again.

Linda you are missed around here on the occasions where we discuss David A. and it isn’t a “main” topic. I’ve even commented on it before ;)

Oh I can’t make a post without a little snark, so I’ll just say that you are the sanest person in the Archie nut house :)

So far this Blog entry has left me with a very positive opinion of Archie (the videos are great) but a decreased opinion of his devoted fans.

JTesla,

Sorry about some of the fans, but David really does have some great fans. They are just intensely devoted to a fault and extremely overprotective. Thanks for not holding his fans against him.

I go to several of the general blogs and enjoy posting about all of the idols. Thanks again to Rodney for posting those videos. They were fun.

Luci…I’m telling you this in all sincerity…I was flat’s ally for a long time and it has come back to bite me in the you know what. He finds a sore place and then works at it until you feel like screaming. If we seem harsh toward him it is for VERY good reason.
