9/15: Jennifer Hudson engaged, Idols Live tour ends. Who will we hear from again?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Jennifer Hudson, who didn’t want to talk about her personal life to me a few weeks ago (as well as that pesky album cover), had her rep confirm to people.com that she is engaged to a fellow reality show contestant.
From People.com:
Jennifer Hudson and boyfriend, David Otunga, have gotten engaged after less than a year dating, her rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.
“I can confirm that Jennifer got engaged to her boyfriend David on Friday night in L.A.” says the rep.
Otunga, who is known as “Punk” from the reality show I Love New York 2, popped the question with a Neil Lane diamond ring on the Dreamgirls Oscar winner’s 27th birthday.
Both are from Chicago. Hudson’s album finally hits stores Sept. 30. I’ll see if I can wrangle an advance copy. Probably not.
-The “Idols Live” tour wrapped up Saturday in Tulsa. Here’s the very last (sniff) Mavid dance for the ages, courtesy of rickey.org. Two items: panties and silly string. MIchael Johns is in high ham mode (or is that bacon?):
Now comes the interesting debate. Who will disappear? Who will last?
We can go backwards:
10- Chikezie. With a name like that, who can truly forget him? He might get a few gigs in national touring plays, might work well in a package tour with other ‘Idols.” Not sure if he has as future as the next Luther Vandross, though. Odds we’ll care in five years: 10-1
9- Ramiele. Who? Oh, yah. Well, she might get some gigs in Hawaii and the Phillipines teaming up with season three third place finisher Jasmine Trias. On the mainland? Not so much. Odds we’ll care in five years: 10,000-1
8-Michael Johns. We have to root for our former Buckhead boy, hope he can find the right mix of music, get some radio airplay a la Elliott Yamin. You never know. He’ll get work in some capacity. Odds we’ll care in five years: 7-1
7-Kristy Lee Cook. As noted, she’s already got an album “Why Wait” coming out Tuesday. Look on the bright side: the sooner she arrives, the quicker she’ll disappear. Odds we’ll care in five years: 50-1
6-Carly Smithson. A true wild card. She might just find herself some theater work, may be able to get a solo album or two out there. Maybe she’ll front a band. I have no clue! Odds we’ll care in five years: 10-1
5-Brooke White. She’s guaranteed to get some album deal. She’s likable and is just distinctive and interesting enough, she might make it okay in the woolly nasty music biz world. We’ll see how savvy she really is in picking the right music, discerning tastes and surrounding herself with good people. Odds we’ll care in five years: 4-1
4-Jason Castro. He is actually a bright guy who has this Spicoli act. Will it work long term? I’m not sure but he has a dedicated fan base that should get him flying, um, high. He’ll get a record deal for sure. Odds we’ll care in five years: 3-1
3-Syesha Mercado. No matter how much she protests, she’s Broadway bound. That’s where she belongs. Not sure if she has much of a chance being the next Alicia Keys. Odds we’ll care in five years: 8-1
2-David Archuleta. His fans will keep him afloat for awhile. “Crush” looks to be a solid hit, a way to fashion him as a Donny Osmond of our generation. He’s emotive, sweet and cute and all that. How will he mature? It’ll be fascinating, for sure but I’m sure I’ll be mentioning him as often as possible in this blog! Odds we’ll care in five years: 75%
1-David Cook. He’ll carve out a solid career as a solo rock artist. I can’t imagine another path for him. If he falls short, I’ll be personally surprised. Of course, he has Daughtry to follow and that is tough. But I think he can do it. Tentative release date for his album: November 18. More info here. Odds we’ll care in five years: 85%
-Ryan Seacrest will be profiled in a pre-Emmy special at 7 p.m. on ABC Sunday along with several other celebs with Jimmy Kimmel, sort of a TV versin of the Barbara Walters special before the Oscars.
Seacrest here talks to a couple of Emmy cohosts including Tom Bergeron and Jeff Probst.

Interesting list, I disagree with the odds on Jason Castro. The rest… meh. Congrats to Jennifer Hudson.

Interesting stuff, Rodney, Thanks! I’d love to know how you arrived at some of your odds, but I’m actually fairly much in agreement with you, LOL!!!
And yes, mentioning Archie is like mentioning Clay … you are sure to get hits!!! so keep on keeping on!!

Congrats to Jennifer and her intended. May they have the best life has to offer.
Looks as if Michael was hamming and having a real good time. DC got the blunt of the silly string.
Haven’t had time to post today. Started off this morning when I got to the office, I couldn’t get in; then the system went down, so no access to internet, email, etc. That threw my payroll processing way out of line since I have to have internet. The alarm went off and we couldn’t get it off, so had to call ADT out to check on it. To make matters worse, our warehouse manager had a heart attack at the office and had to be taken to Emory Hospital. This has just been a day from hello.
Rodney, hope you had a good time in the big apple.

I pretty much agree with most of your predictions, Rodney but…I really don’t think Brooke White is going anywhere other than your host for a local children’s show.
As far as Jason is concerned…I heard that he was much better on tour than he was on the show. I see coffee house venues(do they still have those?) for his future and a loyal following.
Our country artists seem to stay in or at the edge of the limelight so I think we’ll be hearing about Kristie Lee for awhile.
Carly has a chance, IMO, depending on whoever takes control of her career.
Michael has a chance as well but I’m seriously worried about him going indie.
Syesha…I don’t think she’ll ever headline anywhere but she’s talented and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see her have a halfway decent career.
Archie has his version of the Claymates so I don’t think he’ll disappear any time soon but, it will really depend on what he chooses to sing and who he chooses to sing it to. And how much he matures.
David Cook has as much of a chance as Daughtry. He can win a lot of support but he’ll have to put out a really good album.

The Odds.
I must disagree, too, with Jason’s odds. I can’t see us still following him in 5 years. He wasn’t the next Jennifer Hudson or anything, so I don’t think his status will flourish any.
Also remember, Rodney… Syesha does protest that she’s not broadway bound, but she also states that that is not what she intends to do or wants to do. She has such a wide range of talent that she could very well do many things. If people would stop dissing her, and give her a chance, she could easily be the next big R&B star, Alicia, Beyonce, it JUST DEPENDS what she does and how she does it.
And poor Ramiele just didn’t make enough of an impact to shine big in the future, unfortunately. But who knows maybe she will surprise us by finding a good mentor and producer and do well.

Interesting odds. Anybody’s guess but I think we’d better be prepared for Archie to hang on for a long while. He’s young enough to evolve with many generations to come. I think he’s gonna be in it for the long haul. I wouldn’t count on him going awaaaaayyyyyyyy any time soon.

The only way David James Archuleta isn’t around in five years will be if he isn’t around, GF. Or, if he is muzzled by the industry. David is a fresh voice in the stale music industry and he knows how to deliver any song. In five years David will have a richer and deeper voice with which to thrill and amaze the world.. As for his maturation, that’s up to David, we applaud him for many qualities, his voice keeps us begging for more. David will have many opportunities to astound the world, not just musically. Or haven’t you heard?

I would be very surprised if David Archuleta does not make it big in the music industry. He has that big voice and he has a sweet innocence that is quite appealing. He has the chops to make it long term as a vocalist. I think the bigger question is will he become a great songwriter? Great kid, big future ahead in whatever he does. I love this guy.

I’m sure David Archuleta is in for the long… long road! He is the Frank Sinatra, the Elvis Presly of this ERA. That kid has a huge fan base that goes from tween, teen, adults & senior citizens. His amazing voice radiates energy & emotion!
We can expect BIG things for this kid!

You might as well add another 35% to David Archuleta’s rating (bringing it to 110%) because David will be around a very, very, very long time. You can take that to the bank…or should I say he will be taking that to the bank because, with his outstanding talent and his diversified fan base, David Archuleta is destined for Super Stardom…watch & see…

I know that David Archuleta is going to be a megastar in five years. As far as comparing the two Davids I think that David Archuleta will have many more years on the music scene just because of the age difference. Not saying Cook is not going to be successful becauseIthink he will. I wish people who wrote stories like this could be more unbiased more informed and how do you know anyway.

You mentioned David A. is sweet and cute, that alone won’t get you remembered in 5 years. You forgot to mention is amazing vocals, the way he really sings a song to move emotions in people, the dedication and high work ethics he displays, and the love he has for the industry, and for his fans. THAT is what will keep him in the fourfront of Music for Many, Many, years to come!!!

JTesla, not sure why you feel that way. He loves how much his fans support him and he’s said so many times. Now, I admit there are probably a few crazies in the bunch, but that’s going to be true of any popular artist.

I wish all the idols much luck in their careers. I really enjoy David Archuleta’s music. There’s nothing wrong with comparing him to Donny Osmond. We need more wholesome artists to look up to in the music industry nowadays But I think David will go out to break and set records, he has a worldwide fan-base and it’s growing everyday.
One last note: the Crush music video is available for download on itunes tomorrow.

How odd that David Archuleta and Jason Castro have the same chance for us to care about their success in 5 years from now!!! 75% is euqal to 3 to 1. I think David Archuleta’s Archmazing voice will be admired for a very, very long time. What some may view as a lack of maturity is more likely a lack of corruption. It’s hard for people to recognize purity of soul who have already been tainted by the world.

Rooting for Michael Johns, too. Great talent and interesting music influences but the industry’s tough. He’s a resilient guy though—whatever happens, he’ll work in music at some capacity which is all he wants anyway. His ‘success’ will not be stratospheric but of all of them, I think he’s gonna be around for the long haul.
The Davids might be future hitmakers in their respective mainstream genres. They mesh right well in the charts among the Jonas Brothers, Miley, Daughtry and Fallout Boy.
Castro—I think he’s the one whose loyal fanbase closely resembles the Claymates. They’ll be supporting him no doubt and that could be enough to sustain a career.
Brooke might’ve a place in the crowded female singer-songwriters group but I think her voice, musical and songwriting skills pale will never be at par with the best of ‘em (like Castro). But she also has an AI following that could help her.

I was disappointed at the Tulsa show when they sang the last song. Panties were flying out all over. With my kids watching the show, they were not sure what those were. Starting with Cook and Johns throwing out men’s underwears, red undie also was tossed out. Just a few idols degrade the quality of the family show. You may say it’s just for fun. But throwing underwears is the only fun they could think of?

Im surprised why you only gave 75% to David Archuleta. Through the years, as his popularity and his fan base increases and his love for music will so deepen and his musical talent grows, years from now, you will look back on this day, the day you wrote about the 75% of his chance, as the day that Archie is least popular and the day his fans love him the least. Archie will be a megastar and he will thrill the whole world because his amazing talent. May God bless David Archuleta!

I definitely agree with most of your predictions. I think that Cook is the most promising but I wouldn’t write off Syesha yet. If she gets a record deal that promotes her well, she might surprise everyone. I thought that the 75% estimate for Archuleta was being way too generous until I saw all of the comments below…..then I understood your point.

David Archuleta is “young,good-looking,likeable and has a great voice…not a bad place to be”. But I agree he has to choose his songs and his audience/listeners wisely. I think he will because he has great musicality and feel. I’d love to see him write his own songs and he has the voice to duet with most singers.
I can see Cook being successful as well. So yes, I agree with your predictions. I wish them well.

The underwear part was a re-enactment of a scene in the movie Zoolander. The past 3 tour stops all had acts from that scene leading up to the underwear “finale”. I’m sure lots of kids have seen that movie and would actually find what the idols did funny….sometimes it helps to know a little pop culture (and math!).

Jordana…I know lots of pop culture except where it’s related to Ben Stiller. With the exception of Tropic Thunder(which I went to see cuz I LOVE Robert Downey Jr) There isn’t a single Ben Stiller movie that I’ve ever liked so I gave up going to them before Zoolander came out. There’s just something about him that grates on my nerves….my fault, not his.

I think David Archuleta’s odds of being a star in five years are over 100%. haha Seriously, he has the most incredible, emotive voice I’ve ever heard, he rearranges songs on the fly so they come out different nearly every time he sings them, and he is downright endearing and gorgeous. The more exposed you are to him, the more you learn about him, the deeper your affection for him. I think he’s gonna be HUGE!
JTesla says that he/she feels sorry for David A. coz of the fans he has. A musician should be so lucky! Instead of a niche filled with fans, David A. has a broad, sweeping ocean of people who love him—all ages, cultures, sexes, you name it. That kind of widespread appeal is what turns a singer into an ICON…which is David Archuleta’s destiny. Mark my words coz I will be proven right. As I’ve said before, in five years David will be as big a household name as Celine Dion. Fact.

Archie is an amazing ARTIST who will change the music industry for the better. He has THAT voice, the technical skills, the passionate expressivity, the joy, the talent, the purity of soul, the humility, the good looks, the youth… and he has the musical ability to take on practically any genre of music and make it work. His fans hail from all points around the globe and bridge all gaps in age, gender, language and musical genre! I look forward to buying his album, keeping tabs on his career, and getting to see him perform as a solo artist. 75%??!!!

I’m with you Pappy!!!! Like Nana said, all it takes is two little words…
ah well. D I’m on the boat regarding Stiller; i never saw Zoolander, hardly even REMEMBER that it existed, but … i do seem to remember someone talking about that scene (panties throwing yada yada) … shame that Mr. Stiller is not more funny, his parents are one of my favorite comedy teams from the good ol’ days! Ann Meara and Jerry Stiller could crack me up within a few sentences… and i know lots of people think Ben is great… i just don’t get him, tho i HAVE seen a few things he’s in…

Oh. And all the comments that DA will “change the face of the industry” … um. No. Too much greed and selfishness in the industry. Too many people willing to step ON, not just OVER, others to get the brass ring. So while DA may indeed BE a breath of fresh air in an otherwise dirty field, he won’t be CHANGING much of anything. I have absolutely nothing but respect for the young man. I just don’t particularly find him all THAT entertaining. I admit he has talent and an extremely nice voice — but the package does not draw me in enough to spend money. So … don’t call me a hater, I’m not. He’s just “not my style” is all. I can respect talent without enjoying it!!!
By Nana
September 16, 2008 10:23 AM | Link to this
I was going to stay out of the conversation regarding DA, but in an earlier comment he was compared with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Elvis and Donnie Osmond. Well, Donnie I can see, but to compare him with Elvis and ole Blue Eyes, duh, no way!!! He will never come close to those two. Before I am accused of being a hater and attacked, let me just say that I have nothing against the kid. He is a very talented singer with super vocals. I personally just do not care for him and would not buy his music or pay to see him. This is only my opinion and how I feel about him…….. so please no attacks.
I sincerely hope all the idols do well on their own.

I’m not sure that I understand why there are so many angry sounding comments about what is essentially a positive prediction for David A. Giving a new artist a 75% or 85% chance of success for the next five years in this music market is pretty optimistic and a vote of confidence. So much depends on the industry, producers, songwriters, label support, radio, stamina of the performers, etc., that I doubt that any reviewer would any new artist a 100% chance of success lasting 5 years.
By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,
September 17, 2008 5:03 PM | Link to this
Jenn - good point. I think that, like the ClayMates, there is a contingent of ArchieFans who will take humbrage at anything that doesn’t sound 1 gazillion favorable in their ears; unfortunately, most of them probably haven’t a clue what’s really being said, so they launch tirades and accolades and think they’re doing young Mr. Archuletta a favor. I don’t think he NEEDS defenders; he’s good enough to have an audience — that’s better than a LOT of wannabees out there in the world!!!
I’m like Deirdre - not sure that his “market” is an enduring one; the question will be how he rises — or not — above the changes to endure on his own, adapting, growing, whatever. He has the talent and the physical ability to sing … no questioning that.
peace :-)

8-1 odds on Syesha? Are you nuts? She is more versatile than all the others combined. She’s a quadruple threat - singer, actress, dancer and model. We haven’t even seen what she’s capable of yet in the acting and dancing arenas - she’s just getting started. I think she is very capable of becoming the next Beyonce.

Hey gb, how about if we let Beyonce be Beyonce and let Syesha be Syesha… k? Oh and by the way Syesha isn’t a quadruple threat she is a quintuple threat because she is hot! No, she’s a sextuple threat because she is sexy! Post more pictures of Syesha in the red dress please.
