8/27: Check out Kara DioGuardi on her first reality show
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I got kind of busy Wednesday and neglected to update the blog. My apologies. It’s a crazy week for multiple reasons, though maybe not as crazy as it is for Kara DioGuardi. A lot of debate on the Web whether she’ll help the show or not.
We really won’t know til we see it. The questions are:
1- Will she drive Paula even more batty or balance her out?
2- Will she force the others to shorten their comments because of time restraints? Will this peeve Simon even more? Will it improve flow? I’m not sure if four judges is a good thing though “So You Think You Can Dance” sometimes has five or six.
3- Who will break ties when deciding talent during auditions?
4- What order will she be placed?
5- Will she provide truly useful advise given her position as a singer-songwriter with an impressive resume (Paris Hilton, Ashlee Simpson and Lindsay Lohan notwithstanding) She seems pretty grounded.
6-Will this improve dynamics and inject some new life into the judge’s table? Simon told AP Tuesday “It’s like, you know, having dinner with three people for seven years, and getting quite bored of each other. So it’s having a fourth person, new opinion, I think it’s gonna be interesting.”
Naturally, someone taped “The One: Making of a Superstar,” the pitifully poorly received “Idol” ripoff Kara was on in 2006 and it’s on YouTube. This is definitely a good sign if she’s like this on “Idol.” She shows passion and knowledge. She berates the contestants (including Syesha Mercado, who has to thank her lucky stars was nixed after two weeks):
Fox 5 in New York City shows the first video of Kara entering the NYC auditions Tuesday here.
-Here’s the Mavid doing the Locomotion at the 2 minute point of this video from Dallas:
-Idol Chatter reports the usual three “Idols” on the top 200. As usual, Carrie Underwood is tops at No. 35 with 11K in sales and 2.30 million total. Daughtry holds at 7K in sales and 4.19 million. His single “What About Now” is moving up the download chart and is at No. 161 with 9K sold. It’s now at No. 30 on the top 40 chart with a bullet. Jordin Sparks is at 7K for the week, too, with 892K. Her single “One Step at a Time” is up to 16 on the download chart and 492K total in sales. It also jumps to No. 1 on the top 40 chart, her third top 10 hit on the radio, according to Radio & Records. David Archuleta’s “Crush” drops to No. 6 with 89K for the week and 256K total. It’s jumped to No. 31 in its second week on the top 40 charts (just behind Daughtry) and will soon overtake David Cook’s “Time Of My Life,” which is stuck at No. 29 (with a bullet though) on the top 40 chart. Cooks’ single has sold 29K, down 32 percent with 822K total.
Carrie’s “Just a Dream” has sold 114K so far with its best week so far (22K last week.) It edges up to No. 14 on the country chart. No guarantee it will make the top 10. If it misses the top 10, it’d be a first for a major single. Bucky Covington is sneaking up on the top 20 with “I’ll Walk,” which is at No. 21. It’s his third top 25 hit. Kellie Pickler is still gaining airplay but is jammed at No. 28 with “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful.” Kristy Lee Cook is stuck way back at No. 46 with “15 Minutes of Shame.”
Jennifer Hudson edges up to No. 149 on the download chart with another 9K sold of “Spotlight.” It has sold 78K total. The single has stalled on the urban chart, though, losing airplay but moving up to No. 23 from 24.
-I have an autographed photo of the top 10 if anybody wants it. I got it just as they were finishing a round of autographs last week during a NetJets meet and greet at the Gwinett Arena. I forgot I had it til today. I kind of joked with some of them that they do so many autographs, they’ve become virtually illegible. Brooke White showed me her fancy big autograph on a separate sheet of paper in comparison to what you see on the photo with a smiley face and such. I need to take a picture of the picture and post it on the blog. I’ll do that later this week. How do you think I should give it away? A contest? Random?

rita205 Aug 27th, 2008 at 10:21 am As to Syesha, I didn’t think of it as a breakdown, but chalked it up to being tired and emotional, the emotions being over the top, probably from being overly tired. Her set was energetic, very on-target with the performance aspect, and I thought she sounded really good. On that last song, I didn’t really see anything happening until she rose up from the stage. At the end of the song, she had gone into the middle of the extension area of the stage and sank to her knees, and put her face down toward the floor. Honestly, at first I thought it was just a dramatic flourish to the song. Then she rose, and was actually crying - kind of sobbed a little - as she finished. The camera did a close up of her and tears were streaming. She apologized for hitting the last notes wrong, and apologized for crying, saying “that wasn’t supposed to have happened”. I actually was touched, and the crowd was, too. I didn’t really look at it as a breakdown - ok, maybe a little - but it wasn’t like she had to be escorted off stage or anything.
MY RESPONSE: I REALLY WANT TO SEE THIS VIDEO! YET TO POST ON YOUTUBE!

Good morning everyone! I watched AGT last night. Did anyone else think David Hasselhoff (sp?) was drunk?

Morning, DawnH. Funny you said that. It sort of came to me that something was a bit off with him, and I kept flashing back to that video of him drunk and eating the hamburger. Don’t know what made that come to mind. Must have been subliminal in something he said or some way he acted last night. So, yes, this rang a bell when I saw what you wrote. Tell me what made you think so.

Morning!
All is well with the move. More work to do but much easier than yesterday.
Rodney…it’s a good thing you mentioned that autographed picture at the end of a blog that doesn’t mention Archie…you would have been deluged with his fans by now seeking ways to get their happy little hands on the picture.

Missed AGT last night, so someone else will have to help you out Dawn.
Rodney, thanks for the information. As far as the 4th judge goes, only time will tell if it will benefit AI. Personally, I think it will be good to have a fresh and new input. She just may round things out and make the comments more interesting. If Carrie’s “Just A Dream” doesn’t make the top 10, I will be shocked. It is a very potent song with a powerful message, and of course, a tearjerker. This is MO only.
On giving the autographed pix, have some type of contest relating to AI, such as a questionaire and the one with the most correct answers would win. You could make it a multiple choice or just the question and let us find the answer. This is only one idea, and I’m sure other posters will have others.

harrietth - I thought he was overly animated both in actions and comments. He also made a couple of strange comments. For example, at the start of the show Jerry asked him about the acts leaving, and he just sort of rambled on and said he was looking forward to it??? His eyes also looked a little red and glassy to me.
I have to say, I thought the guys who were in the elimination with the little martial arts girl were so sweet. They all hugged her and encouraged the audience to cheer. And the one guy walked with her off the stage and then brought her back out sitting on his shoulder. Really sweet.

DH, I agree. I thought that was the sweetest gesture on their part. Nobody wanted to send her home. You could see the struggle. I guess what you said about Hasselhoff was the same reason I started flashing on his drunk video. Something made me start thinking about that. And he was late coming onstage at the beginning of the show, too.

Nana / flats - my question is… are enough players out of jail to play the first game?
harritth, I agree. I keep picturing him in that drunk video, and wasn’t his daughter (?) talking to him and doing the videoing. If that had gotten out on me - I would never be seen in public again - and I certainly would never take another drink! That was just so sad.

flats, you are right! Tonight is USC’s first game of the year. Go Gamecocks! Scary, though that we are favored by two touchdowns. And, I have reservations about the guy named to start at QB. We will see. It will be on ESPN, so I hope we look decent!

Probably because it is a long holiday weekend, Dawn. I couldn’t believe it either. I am glad because my USC Gamecocks won last night. Not too happy with the way they looked for most of the game, however.

Yes, D. Tech won and played a good game. I was anxious to see the new system and how it worked, but no tv. Not that I would have watched anyway, with the game being played here in Columbia, but what I saw on the late sports channels looked good. They should surprise some folks.
What is everyone doing for the holiday weekend? I am going to Charlotte to help my aunt celebrate her 88th birthday. My sister’s birthday is on the 1st, so we are doing two for one. I do most of the cooking for it, and that is something I really love to do—cook. But, only when I have time.

Harrietth…have a good trip to Charlotte…then perhaps you could come to GA and do some cooking for me! :-)
Dawn, linny’s on vacation, I’m busy with my mom’s move, and I think everyone else is just taking a blogging break. The new TV season starts soon so we’ll have a lot to talk about in the upcoming weeks.
I’m looking forward to Fringe, the new series by the guys who brought us Lost. From what I hear it won’t be a continuing story like Lost, just new stories each week.

D, I have not heard of Fringe. Sounds good. Do you or Dawn watch Heroes? Heroes and Lost are my favorites after AI.

I’ve never watched Heroes, harrietth but the ads for this season make it look really interesting. Maybe I’ll have to do what linny did with Lost and watch the dvds and catch up.

D, Heroes is very much worth watching from the beginning. I fell in love with it from the start and feel the same devotion to it as I do to Lost. Can’t wait for the next season for either one. Heroes keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Gamecocks’ defense looked great, but the competition level increases about tenfold in the next two weeks. We will see how awesome they look then. I am a bit grumpy about last night’s game, personally.

Deirdre, I had never watched Heroes before a few weeks ago, now I’m an addict. As harrietth suggest, watch it from the beginning.

JT, when I look back at the previous seasons of Heroes, I realize how really good the show is. It caught my imagination from the beginning, and I was hooked. I always record any episodes I may have to miss, but believe me, I cannot wait to get to my dvr and play it later.

harrietth - I’ve never seen an episode of Heroes. Maybe I’ll try to catch up and start watching. My favorite show - Damages. Can’t wait for the new season to start, but it must be later in the fall since I’ve not seen anything about the previews.
