8/12: Daughtry gets expanded treatment, Michael Johns interview forthcoming

daughtry deluxe edition.jpg

Daughtry’s first CD has already sold 4 million-plus copies but according to USA Today, the label is releasing an “enhanced” version featuring acoustic versions of “What About Now” and “Home,” as well as a live version of “It’s Not Over” and a cover of Foreigner’s “Feels Like the First Time.” A DVD features the videos from his five singles and concert footage.

Acts such as Chris Brown and Rihanna have created “bonus” CDs. This is the first time an “Idol” alum has earned such an honor. Or a desperate way for the label to make a few more pennies. And believe me, those labels need every penny because albums seldom sell 1 million copies nowadays, much less 4 million.

You can pre-order here.. It’s out Sept. 9.

-I have a Michael Johns interview set up in advance of the “Idols Live” tour coming to Gwinnett Arena Wednesday. Any questions I should ask the former Buckhead man? Email me at rho@ajc.com.

One of his fans sent me this video of Michael and David Cook doing goofy dances at varous “Idols Live” concerts ranging from “The Robot” to “The Running Man” to some sort of “Grease” takeoff. Word is that they’ve been told to stop it from the Powers That Be. I’ll definitely ask if this is true.

-And yes, it was no problem getting a hold of season four’s Mikalah Gordon. I am talking to her Wednesday as well for “Gone Country 2” debuting Friday so if you have any questions to ask her, please email me as well.

-David Archuleta’s “Crush” is now available on iTunes and Amazon. Have at it fans!

-The Boston Herald reviewer gave the show a lukewarm review.

Funny (or mean, depending on your mood) line about Michael Johns, who the writer felt lacked movement:

The weathered Aussie rocker has the chops to churn out Queen and Aerosmith anthems, but in terms of mannerisms he’s a slightly edgier Michael Bolton.

-I wrote an advance print story about the “Idols Live” tour which is here.. I basically did a comparison of the two Davids.

-Carrie Underwood states the obvious in Allure magazine: fame makes dating hard. Really!

“You never really know why somebody wants to be around you, or if they do genuinely like you,” Underwood, 25, tells Allure magazine in the September issue. “I wish everyone had a label on their forehead so you could automatically tell their intentions. Sometimes you just wish that no one wanted anything from you.”

-Do you want to know what Ryan Seacrest looked like shirtless in 1994? TMZ provides this classic pose.

Morning!

Congrats and a big thank you to our USA swim team! It’s so much fun to watch. And another BIG congrats to the men’s gymnastic team. Not expected to do much of anything and then they win a bronze!!!!

Rodney, ask Michael how he feels about releasing an album without signing with anyone. I know it is his choice but seems pretty risky to me.

Good for Daughtry. That boy has really taken off like a rocket and I hope he continues to do so.

Lara: Who was the mole? I had figured it to be Mark.

Congrats to Phelps for picking up his 3rd gold. I heard earlier this morning that the US has won more gold than any other country so far. GO USA!! We are still the best of the best.

mornin’ all

Nana i hope your headache goes away quickly … if i ignore certain stressors, sometimes, i can avoid the headache … sometimes it’s a no-matter-what thing, tho’ — y’all have a lovely day.

i’ve just not been able to get into the olympics this year — not sure why. proud of what our teams and athletes are doing — just … i dunno, can’t get the interest stirred :-( maybe it’s all the other stuff i’m having to deal with right now…

in any event, y’all have a lovely day…

LOL Rodney has but to mention DA in the headline, and the love starts pouring out! how sweet it is.

on a much sourer note — anyone seen the story about the little girl who sang in the opening ceremony? it was NOT her voice that was played while she ‘sang’ — it was the voice of another little girl who wasn’t so perfect in appearance. sad. i don’t care if the fireworks televised display was computer graphics to enhance the visual — so what. but to tell a little girl she wasn’t “perfect” enough in appearance but her VOICE was perfect so a “perfect looking” girl will pretend to sing “in the national interest of China” … that’s just wrong.

Uh oh. Rodney mentioned David Archuletta.

I’m loving the Olympics, too. Go U.S.A.! Also loved the way we beat those arrogant French swimmers. To repeat from yesterday, the French should show a little more respect for the U.S. If it weren’t for the U.S., the French would be German.

I agree, linny…what a rotten thing to do to a little girl.

By DawnH

August 12, 2008 10:19 AM | Link to this

linny - that IS sad, but you can’t say you’re surprised! I think there is a lot of “funny stuff” with China. For example, the girls on the gymnastic team are supposed to be 16. How many of those little girls looked 16 to you - and one didn’t look 12! They said their passports showed they were 16 but, seriously, how hard is that for a COUNTRY to get changed!

I also think that if China has a less than perfect event, they still get much higher scores than say, the U.S., when they have less than perfect events. A lot of discrepancies in the scoring. Even the commentators who, for the first few days commented as if they were actually citizens of China, are talking about the questionable scoring.

oh i know, Dawn, and it’s not just China. But really — this whole “we put on pretty show — so see, we are perfect country” just makes me grit my teeth, LOL. if they were so perfect, why did they not start taking the pollution problem in beijing seriously until just before the olympics? as an example of governmental control … yeah, right! if you won’t obey the government we will use the military — oh wait. the air is not clean. why will you not obey us!? ok — let’s paint a pretty picture over the dirt; no one will notice that way!

sorry. i just think using kids that way is worse than mean.

Dawn…I think that happens(questionable scoring) in every Olympics. But I agree with you on the little Chinese gymnastic girls. Either they are giving them hormone suppressants to keep them out of puberty or Chinese girls mature a LOT slower than the rest of the world.

In the long run…what have they gained? Gold medals based on cheating. They’ll know that every time they look at it.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

August 12, 2008 10:38 AM | Link to this

Nana, i don’t think D was so much “correcting” you as she was just supplementing your information — relax, hon, we support and build each other up, for the most part, right? we’re like a big ol’ family — we chat and disagree and agree and argue and support and cheer each other on, for the most part. you’re fine, and so is D :-)

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

i haven’t watched the girl gymnists from china — compare their size and age to the little contortionist on AGT — she is chinese by birth but has been raised in america virtually all her life — how does she compare? serious question!

By JC

August 12, 2008 10:44 AM | Link to this

Ask Mikalah what that is on her lip. A piercing? is it on her cheek. Where did that idea come from. any meaning behind the new huge tattoo?

By Deirdre

August 12, 2008 10:49 AM | Link to this

Nana…go to msnbc.com. They’re pretty accurate when it comes to the Olympics. And those stats change frequently!

From what I read…and who knows how true it is…the pollution problem in Beijing did not exist back when they were chosen to host the Olympics. The growth in the city, the number of cars and manufacturers has nearly quadrupled since then. The pollution came as a rude awakening and they are extremely embarrassed.

I think China opening itself to the world like this can only help. It has, for so long, been such a closed society. Now, the world can see things that were forbidden before…and vise versa. The more open to the world they become, the more difficult it will be for the gov’t to hide its transgressions.

linny - I didn’t watch much of AGT, so I don’t really remember the size of the little Chinese contortionist. How old was she? It’s not just the size of the gymnasts (sp?). I think for the most part, all gymnasts are smaller than average. It is also how incredibly young their faces are.

What I truly love about the Olympics is that it’s the one time when the people of the world try…really, really TRY..to act civilized. The effort is made to set aside hatred(in most cases) and see the world as a place where we ALL live. The sports rivalries are good natured(despite the trash talking French)and respect for an athlete’s abilities crosses all borders.

Politics makes us enemies….sports makes us friends.

David has delivered an amazing first single to his fans, and the public. It is rhythmic, David’s superior vocal ability soars and is identifiable throughout, has a catchy beat - Hey —> I watched lotsa American Bandstand back in the day :) His older fans like me find themselves humming along unconsciously, and the verses transport us back to those bygone days of school girl and schoolboy CRUSHES… It appeals across a very broad spectrum of listeners, and should effectively silence the detractors and critics who didn’t believe he had mainstream appeal. CRUSH is the catapult for David to continue his growth and evolution as an artist - I ANTICIPATE MANY MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING MUSIC FROM HIM. TAKE A BOW DAVID… YOU’VE ARRIVED.

Well said, D. But how tragic was it that a coach’s father (was it one of the U.S. swim coaches?) was killed while just being a tourist. I guess his mom was seriously injured but is doing better. I heard it was just random. But nonetheless, what could have been the most exciting event of your life was suddenly turned into the worst moment of your life. I haven’t heard anything more about it really, so I don’t know more recent details. Unfortunately, that could happen anywhere.

By Deirdre

August 12, 2008 11:25 AM | Link to this

Dawn..it was the father-in-law of the US men’s volleyball coach. And it was a terrible tragedy. We can sympathize with China on that since a bomb killed a tourist here in Atlanta during our Olympics. No matter how much security we have, someone with a grudge or an unstable mind can get past it if they are determined enough.

Congratulations to David Archuleta and American Idol for supporting this true Idol of all ages, races! He zoomed to #1 on itunes with his first single, “Crush”. His soulful voice is proving to be a hit to fans all over the world. His performances and song choices at the concerts are up to date, emotional, savvy, and attracts all ages…He is the reason for the these sold out concerts. He is truly a whole ‘nother league than American Idol…And the reason why a big percentage of America does not vote on Idol…he does not fit the American Idol mold…he attracts so many Americans because of his wholesome good looks, his natural talent to sing the phone book, and because he refuses to play the part, but instead marches to his own tune! Thanks for highlighting him…Atlanta loves David Archuleta…the screams for him will be deafening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!He is on a wave that is climbing higher every concert!!!!

By harrietth

August 13, 2008 9:40 AM | Link to this

D, you remember two weeks ago I had to go with my sister to have her cat euthanized. That’s why you need hugs. It will be so traumatic for you. However, I was certainly impressed at the process. They really do just “go to sleep.”

By Deirdre

August 13, 2008 9:44 AM | Link to this

I was thinking about you, harrietth. I hate doing this to any animal but sometimes it’s necessary. The appt is this afternoon so I have all day to dwell on it.

By harrietth

August 13, 2008 9:54 AM | Link to this

It is a kind thing to do, D, but so painful for the one who has to make the decision. Our little cat was such a part of our family, as I am sure your mother’s cat has been. It really is like a death in the family. Folks who don’t have pets won’t understand that, but it really is. I keep expecting the cat to be in the house when I get home from work. I still close the door to the living room to keep the cat out, even though she isn’t there any longer. Stuff like that. You expect them to walk through a door or be sleeping on a bed. So, the trauma isn’t only at the death, it is in the grieving, too. Are you quite attached to this cat? I am sure your mom is.

By Deirdre

August 13, 2008 10:07 AM | Link to this

Shadow is a lovely cat who is scared of anyone but my mom. I’ve been feeding him, changing his litter box and generally taking care of him for nearly 4 years and he still runs when I walk in the room. Silly cat! Mom wants it to happen but she’s going to have a pretty rough week. She wants to get over crying about the cat before she moves at the end of the month.

By harrietth

August 13, 2008 10:13 AM | Link to this

D, this is a great idea on her part. And, the change of scenery will help her so much as far as grieving for the cat. She won’t be in surroundings that constantly remind her. Still, it is traumatic for you and your mother. My thoughts will be with you, not only this afternoon, but throughout the day, D.

Not to change the subject…and not to start a political argument but I just can’t resist this one….I apologize.

Hey folks, I had to take my mom’s dog to the vet Monday to be put to sleep. She just couldn’t bring herself to do it. I never had a real attachment to the dog but it still brought a tear to my eye when I told him good-bye.

flats, COLLEGE BALL just around the corner. Congrats on the pre-season #1 ranking. We got #11 which ain’t bad having two new coordinators and still no decision on a starting quarterback.

100 years ago, after my divorce, I got a kitten from the shelter. I don’t have kids, and that kitten became my baby. We went through a lot, me and my boy. He was a huge cat, and fat. He acted more like a dog than a cat, following me around everywhere, waiting at the door when I left, he even played catch. He became diabetic and I had to give him insulin shots for years. I had my boy for 17 years, until he went into congestive heart failure, and I had to have him put to sleep 4 years ago. I wasn’t able to be with him; I had to be on a plane to NY on business. My dad took him for me. It still breaks my heart when I think about losing that cat. I now have a dog and 3 cats (uh, long story), but as much as I love these babies, nothing could replace my boy. This blog has made me very sad today. I am so sorry for those of you who have had to, or are having to put down your pet, or the pet of someone you love.

I think they should go with Todd. He is more experience in the spread offense. Burns should play to but just to mix things up a little.

I’m already sick of all the hype OSU is getting. They will probably walk through the weak Big Ten and get their asses handed to them again by the SEC who ever it might be.

Dawn…it’s the only bad part about pet ownership. We have to give them up at some point and we have to be as humane as possible about it.

Thanks for all the kind words and stories about the pets y’all have cared about. I’ll always be grateful to my gorgeous golden retriever who spared me by chasing a deer away from our fence, lying down, exhausted by the pure joy of chasing a deer and dying quietly in his sleep. I wish they could all go as happy and pain free as he was that day.

Now everybody smile…because, no matter how sad it is to lose them, they still bring tremendous joy to our lives.

I have so much sympathy for all of you who’ve been through this … my son was given a cat a few years ago — grew totally attached within days — but we found out the cat was diseased (feline leukemia) and the previous owner didn’t know — the change in environment evidently set the cat off (stress?) … my son sat at the vet and cried his heart out…

my China cat never reappeared, i hope she’s found a loving home — but her “half-sister” (from the next year’s litter) who looked just like her got into a fenced yard with dogs who DON’T like cats — she didn’t make it out unfortunately. That’s hard because there was nothing we could do about it — we had her body taken out of that yard and we buried her but… that was really tough on all of us, especially with the older one having “left home”.

But cats will do as cats will do, as we all who have been owned by them know well. I still call out for China every evening, just in case…

enough of that…as D said, while they deign to give us their presence they are joyful to love and be loved by — and just like our kids, they have minds of their own sometimes!

Bye everyone. Time to hit the road. Where was Nana today? She usually says goodbye before I do. Anyway, be safe on your way—wherever you are going.
