6/25: Jennifer Hudson’s new single “Spotlight”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Want to hear Jennifer Hudson’s new song “Spotlight”? Check it out here:
It’s a midtempo R&B tune with some crossover potential to top 40. It was produced by Atlanta’s own Ne-Yo and Stargate, the same team that did Rihanna’s huge hit “Irreplaceable.” Tell me what you think! On my first listen, it sounds like a solid tune but not breakthrough No. 1 territory. It might grow on me, though.
-MJ reports that Blake Lewis clarified his remarks he made about being “dropped” by Arista to Fox 5 in New York, saying his contract option wasn’t picked up. Semantics. He’s still with 19 Recordings, like Ruben Studdard. Check out the video here. He’s already working on a second album.
And the goddess that she is, she also has David Cook and David Archuleta (still promoting!) on “The View.” Since they’ve been on every other talk show already, this offers zero revelations. Cook does look zonked. Funny that one of the ladies thought he said David Cassidy when Archuleta cited Eva Cassidy. Archuleta’s dad Jeff blamed the press for just focusing on him just for the sake of controversy and Cook defended him, saying he saw him as nothing more than a “loving, caring father. That’s it! It’s funny sometimes media will take a story and pervert it.” Yes! It’s our fault!
-MTV.com has given us a preview of Katharine McPhee in her August acting debut in “House Bunny” here.. She also sings the Waitresses’ classic “I Know What Boys Like.”
-Simon Cowell is producing a movie based on the down-and-out opera singer/phone salesman who won “Britain’s Got Talent.” It’s called “One Chance.”.
Here’s a video of Paul Potts from the show:
-Not sure if this crew watches much “America’s Got Talent,” but it’s a lot more fun than “Nashville Star.” And I enjoy it more than “So You Think You Can Dance.” This week’s audition episodes featured a dude Eli Matson, 26, who sang “Walking in Memphis” fairly well, so much so that the judges and crowd went gaga but I wasn’t nearly as taken in. I’m not sure why but you have to wonder if he tried out for “Idol.”
Then there’s the gal named Miss Pussycat who does something dubbed “grinding” which features metal and sparks. Lots and lots of sparks. It’s a novelty but I can’t say it’s “talent” per se. There were two street dancers from New Orleans with a great bakc story who were also quite entertaining and acrobatic. The boy band cometh aren’t half bad either.
Some acts are great for two minutes but I’m not sure if they have staying power—the dancing cowboys will make the top 20 for sure but not much further. And can that gal who jumps on the pole give us enough entertainment by the fourth or fifth time we see her?

I recorded The View. I just don’t understand why both David’s are on every show. I just don’t remember that in the past. Ana Archie got to sing a song he did well on the show and Cook had to sing that awful “winner’s song”. The reason she thought he said David Cassidy is because they had stupid mics on and the kid MUMBLES!!!! Good grief!
Not watching America’s got talent. My Tivo didn’t record Nashville Star for some reason. I think you may be right, Clay could be the mole. I am going to see LifeHouse tonight, so I won’t be able to watch SYTYCD tonight!
Good morning blogsters!

Morning!
Well, I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t watch either Japanese game show last night. First, I completely forgot they were on(as we age, those little lights in our heads slowly start to go off)AND, I had taped a western for hubby and he got into that…but mostly, I just forgot! :-(
I’ll start watching America’s Got Talent after the preliminary stuff…there’s only so much of that show I can take.

Is it just me or does Jennifer Hudson’s new song sound a little disco/dance party?

AGT is actually a lot of fun so far this year, but i thought Atlanta’s auditions were last night and was disappointed that we have to wait yet another week to see what weird things happen ‘here’ … Yes, Rodney, it IS better than Nashville Star-NBC version, unfortunately!!!
I liked Eli Matson — reminds me of a young Tom Waite with a little more music in his vocals than Tom has. And I’m in total agreement about the staying power of some of these acts they put through, but they WERE somewhat entertaining, at least… I mean… just HOW many bricks on fire can one man break before it gets a little… shall we say … monotonous???
i enjoyed the Next2Nothing (N2N) boy-band-dance crew. I predict out of last night that Eli and N2N will have staying power to the top contestant level, at least. And while i thought they were talented, the VonTrapp replicants really SHOULD have chosen something other than the sound of music to perform to show off their skills. Too predictable, and where do you go from here???
off to the hot copier for an hour or so… ugh. see ya!

Feel bad saying it, but everything is pretty much better than NS this year.

D, I agree about Jennifer Hudson’s song sounding disco/dance party. It is just “ok” to me.
I watched only bits and pieces of AGT last night, due to the fact that I was glued to the College World Series. I checked back and forth between innings. However, I did catch the dancing cowboys, the illusionist, the Elvis impersonator, and the woman who sang “A Change is Gonna Come.” I was not terribly impressed by any of them. The cowboys were ok as a novelty act, but novelties wear off rapidly. I did not see Eli.

Not having seen the show…one can just imagine the thoughts running through my head!

I think the reason they select some of the better “novelty” acts to go through is so there is a variety of talents for the voting shows, as opposed to making it just singing and dancing. Even if the novelty acts don’t win (although a ventriloquist did last year) it gives some spice to the show.

Deirdre — the “pole” act was two guys holding essentially a flexible balance beam sized pole, and a girl/lady/woman/person was doing acrobatics and tumbling stuff jumping WAY in the air and landing, balancing, on the pole (pole was sideways, smarties! smirk) my question there, like so many other novelty acts is “what will you show me DIFFERENT over each of the 6-7-8 however many shows of the competition?
Eli was VERY good imho, and i have NEVER seen an elvis impersonator any better than that kid. He had the tonal quality of elvis in his voice, he had the sneery lip absolutely PERFECT (and didn’t lose it at all) had the right size/shape for the younger elvis … he was great fun, and pretty good at the singing part too. Having grown up during Elvis’ heyday, i’d say this guy is worth watching a show to see, lol…
NBC needs to hear how awful the NS fans feel their version of the show is… i’m almost ready to boycott the sponsors, lol!!!
PJ, perfect analysis of why the novelties get through — and that guy last year WAS really good — obviously so, he’s now got a what, hundred million dollar Las Vegas contract???? that’s pretty good in SOMEONE’s eyes!!!

for clarity — eli was one act (the Tom Waites kinda sound) and the elvis impersonator was another, didn’t mean to run those together that way.

Thanks for the explanation, linny!
I need opinions. Go tp ajc.com, scroll down to the picture with the caption about divas at Phillips arena. Check pictures #2, 8 and 11. Does anyone else see what I think I’m seeing on Paris Bennett?

Well, as to the evil press surrounding Jeff Archuleta…yes, it is your fault. Who are we supposed to blame- the people it isn’t true about???
