6/11: David Cook’s National Anthem, more on Nashville Star

Here’s a video of David Cook performing the National Anthem at last night’s NBA Championship finals in Los Angeles.

Bad first note but he recovered nicely.

“The nerves are way worse [than on Idol],” David Cook told reporters moments before his Tuesday night rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. “It’s the one song you don’t want to mess up. I’m going to try not to notice Jack Nicholson sitting in the front row and think about the lyrics.”

More from people.com

-John Rich naturally believes “Nashville Star” is better than “Idol,” that the judges will spend more time helping improve the contestants off camera. The “Idol” judges generally stay away from the contestants, esp. after that Corey Clark/Paula Abdul controversy a few years back. More here.

Based on what I saw Monday night, the talent isn’t that impressive on “Nashville Star.” There are some charismatic folks, some pretty ones, a few talented ones. I’m not sure if any one person has the entire package based on initial impressions. We’ll see. The ratings were okay—6.6 million viewers, far more than it ever got on USA.

At least this was (deliberately) the most diverse crew of Nashville Star contestants, thanks to the very talented and potential winner Gabe Garcia and less interesting Coffey.

EW thinks it’s better than “Idol.” Do you agree? I don’t. But then again, I’m probably a wee bit biased here on an “Idol” blog, ya know?

-And this is what counts as controversy for Carrie Underwood. She tells People: “I burp a lot.” Stop the presses! More here. Actually, she admits at least one of her exes has cheated on her.

On liking NS more than Idol…nope! The mere fact that Idol has a diversity of musical genres sets it up as more interesting than NS. Seacrest makes Cyrus look awful…maybe ANYBODY would be a better host than Cyrus. I don’t think the talent is necessarily any better.

Haven’t paid attention to the rules of NS yet. Is the voting limited(that would be a huge step up from Idol IMO, where the voting is out of hand and ridiculously competitive.

LOL, true country gal, our Carrie!!!

i’ll have to wait till i get home to listen to david, can’t turn up the volume here, unfortunately…

from what was said during the NS show, they judges call the contestants “our contestants” and said “we want to help you grow and improve” and things like that — so yes, i got the impression that they will interact with the contestants; Jewell actually said a couple of times “advice you were given during the rehearsals” such comments…

i kind of like the idea, now that the judges won’t be judging (just like AI) they will actually work WITH the contestants to try to make them the best they can be — at least in their opinion, LOL!

lunchtime…see ya!

I think DC belched on that first note. Afterward, he settled into his usual flawless vocal, though. It was a good save.

By Menana

June 11, 2008 1:08 PM | Link to this

DC did start badly, but as usual pulled it out. Nerves can get the better of you.

Carrie was in Nashville last week during fan fare and one of the DJ’s from Atlanta interviewed her and she stated that she did not think she was sexy nor very pretty, and that having long legs did not help that image. WHAT????????? Not sexy? She has got be kidding.

D: As far as I know there is no limit to voting on NS. I do like the fact that the judges have more interaction with the contestants and works one on one with them. They attend the rehearsals and give pointers as needed. Maybe AI should consider doing that. A better host would be either Vince Gill or Reba. BRC just doesn’t seem to fit the bill.

Lara: Welcome back. Maybe we all have learned a lesson here.

Almost forgot about SYTYCD is on tonight. They start the real competition tonight. WooHoo!!!!!!

Recovered? I don’t think so. He sang flat and sang out of key. This is coming from the man that won the crown?

By Deirdre

June 11, 2008 1:35 PM | Link to this

I heard a rough start but after that he was perfect….no Frank Sinatra but, compared to popular voices today, he has a lot going for him…and I liked that he just sang the anthem straight instead of fiddling with the arrangement.

AI Fan…maybe the sound on your computer is screwy….because he was not out of key at all.

On NS being better than Idol….nahh. There’s only so much country music a person can take. I like the diverse genres of music highlighted on Idol.

I didn’t see DC’s performance, but I heard it on the radio this morning. I’d be nervous too if I had to perform THAT song in that environment! DC even admitted to unusual nervousness prior to his performance. But, perhaps now that he has one anthem perf under his belt, it’ll get easier from here. He’s making that transition from amateur to pro now. He’ll get better at it. No biggie.

linny: that was a long commute. In September, I will have to start commuting to Griffin as my company is relocating.

Here is a funny for today:

Mrs. Johnson dies and goes to heaven. When she gets to the pearly gates she was met by St. Peter. He said welcome Mrs. Johnson. We have been waiting for you, but before the gates will open to allow your entrance, you must correctly spell a word. She said, okay, I have always been a good speller, so what is the word? St Peter said, you must spell LOVE. She preceeded to spell L-O-V-E and the gates opened. About a year later, Mrs. Johnson was called by St Peter to allow a new person to enter. She was so excited as this was the first time she had been asked to do that. She went to the gates and in front of her was her husband. She was shocked to see him and asked why he was there. He replied, “well, after you died, I got all the insurance money, bought a new house, car and got married to a women 25 years younger than me, bought her diamonds and furs and we traveled to all the places you had always wanted to see. Well yesterday, I was in a car crash and so, here I am. Mrs. Johnson said “Well before I can allow you entry to the pearly gates, you have to correctly spell a word so the gates will open. Mr. Johnson said “No problem, what is the word?” She looked him square in the eyes and said “Checkoslovakia”.

Menana - so will you be going from near Monroe down 138 and over to Griffin? or did i misunderstand where you live?

i knew someone who worked near perimeter with me who lived i think near loganville…her commute was pure #$&#(* as she drove in 78 to 285 and came around… no one could talk her into taking an alternative route, lol… i would NEVER get on 285!!!

ah well…. have to get showered and supper ready so i can settle in for SYTYCD tonight :)

No, the best route for me will be to take the back roads to 81 to Covington 36 to Jackson and 16 into Griffin. The office is located off 16 about 10 miles after you cross I75. There is no way in h*ll I will take 138, I-20, 285, 675 to 75. That ain’t gonna happen. It will be alonger commute and believe me, I am not looking forward to it. In order to have a job, I will have to do it. I am looking for another HR position closer to home, even in Athens since I am only 15 minutes from there. Hopefully, something will turn up.

i wish you a lot of luck! i know how horrible commuting can be! after all those years doing it, i cannot fathom ever doing it again, LOL!

actually, 138 goes on through conyers and down and meets Georgia 20, i’ve driven it many times to get to Mcdonough …. here are the basic directions from monroe to griffin going that way (when i used to drive that, i went from athens to monroe, then down 138 thru conyers, taking the fork onto ga.20, as mentioned here…these directions assume center of town on both ends, so the BS about Ga-11 and spring street etc. are superfluous…

1.Head south on GA-11 toward GA-10-BR/W Spring St - 240 ft 2.Turn right at GA-10-BR/W Spring St - 1.8 mi 3.Turn left at GA-138 - 20.0 mi 4.Continue on GA-20 W - 16.9 mi 5.Continue on GA-155/Zack Hinton Pkwy S - Continue to follow GA-155 - 12.1 mi 6.Turn right at GA-155/Jackson Rd Continue to follow GA-155 - 5.7 mi 7.Turn left at GA-155 S/N Hill St Continue to follow GA-155 S - 0.2 mi 8.Turn left at GA-16 - 285 ft

just a thought—google says that its “56.8 mi – about 1 hour 29 mins” - is your way shorter? i agree, i’d NEVER go to 20-285-675, never ever ever!!!

By Menana

June 11, 2008 7:29 PM | Link to this

I know the way you are talking about. I have also traveled 138 to 20 into McDonough. Also used 155. My brother who lived in Jackson for 22 years and now lives in Covington and is a retired truck driver said either way would be easy for me. He first said 138 to 20 and 155 into Griffin. When I go to my Dad’s who lives in LaGrange we go 81, 36, 16 and then take 54 to Hogansville. so in traveling that route, it would take me approx 1.15 hours to reach the office. It takes me more that now. At least, I shouldn’t have alot of traffic like I do now. I guess i will just have to travel different routes until I find the better one.

I was disappointed in NS. It seems so second rate when compared to AI. The set is boring, the top 12 for the most part are pretty mediocre, Billy Ray is just embarrassing somebody give him a script. I am one of the few who doesn’t like John Rich as a judge - telling them they better be country but choosing Julio Iglasias (was it Julio?) as the winner of his crossover talent show.

For the positive - Wynona isn’t hosting. I couldn’t stand her as the host of NS. Ryan Seacrest isn’t hosting. It is a little more diversified.

I love country music, but I think NS feels like the red neck version of AI. Just my opinion!

Subject: Men and Gadgets. This is my joke for the night, probably the year. It is long, but very funny - be patient!

Give a man a gadget and he is bound by nature to play with it. This is one of those stories where you begin to chuckle…then find yourself laughing out loud.

Pocket Taser Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife. A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Taser for their anniversary submitted this.

Last weekend I saw something at Larry’s Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety….??

WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button.

Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time, I’d get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs.

AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.

Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn’t be all that bad with only two AAA batteries, right?

There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target.

I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and taser in another.

The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.

All the while I’m looking at this little device measuring about 5” long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and (loaded with two itsy, bitsy AAA batteries) thinking to myself, “no possible way!”

What happened next is almost beyond description, but I’ll do my best…

I’m sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, “don’t do it,” reasoning that a one-second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn’t hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one-second burst just for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and …

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION!

I’m pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again.

I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs.

The cat was standing over me making meowing sounds I had never heard before, licking my face, undoubtedly thinking to herself, “Do it again, stupid, do it again!”

Note: If you ever feel compelled to “mug” yourself with a taser, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one-second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor.

A three-second burst would be considered conservative! !!

SON-OF-A-… That hurt like **% !!! A minute or so later (I can’t be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. How did they get up there??? My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I’m still looking for my testicles! I’m offering a significant reward for their safe return!! Still in shock!

P. S. My wife loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it!

“If you think education is difficult, try being stupid.”

Last night’s SYTYCD was interesting. The pairings were quite good, and some of them seem to have sparked good dance chemistry already. I’m definitely looking forward to who manages to pull off the various choreographies and styles — one of my HUGE faves is Joshua — that man flat out OWNS the stage when he steps up and the music starts. W-O-W. The tall couple is going to be interesting to watch — it’s a HUGE challenge to make long tall bodies do some of the moves that choreographers want … but they’re both good, so … and Twitch and Kherrington — wasn’t so sure how it would work, but that turned out really really nice! That boy WANTS to dance!

Getting an ice cream break now and is it ever good. Yummy to the tummy.

linny: Can you give me the name of the daily newspaper in Athens? Maybe I can go online and scan the classified ads.

On SYTYCD, I give five stars to Twitch-Kherington and Raven-Jamie. They were the better of the couples. Thought when Raven pulled down Jamie’s pants………..well don’t know what I thought. That could be what mom smiled at D.

On the jive that was performed by Comfort and Chris, I wasn’t to crazy about it. Although, the jive is one of my favorite dances. The music didn’t seem to be a song that you could jive to and do it justice. Chelsea and Thayne’s ChaChaCha was very sexy and thought they did a good performance, as well as the Tango by Jessica and Will. Very sexy. The waltz that was done by Susie and Marquis was very delicate and smooth. They made it look so effortlessly and easy. Courtney and Gev’s disco was a mess. I didn’t notice many disco moves during their performance. Wasn’t impressed with Kourtin-Matt, Chelsie-Mark, and Katee-Joshua, although I did like Joshua. I think if I had to pick a winner from last night’s performances, it would to be Twitch and Kherington.

Did any of you get a chance to watch all or part of Celebrity Circus? I taped it but did see the last 1/2 hour of it. Will (hopefully) get time tonight to watch at all.

Oh shucks, my ice cream disappeared, so I guess its time to get back to work. Gosh darn it!!!!!!!

…despite the fact that the “joking” is repetitive, offensive, monotonous, stupid, or just plain annoying, and despite the fact that he’s been asked to stop… he still insists he’s “just joking” … like most 12 year old boys, he’s absolutely certain that (1) he’s always right, and (2) that he has an absolute right to jump into anyone’s world on his own terms, and (3) that anyone who disagrees or tries to challenge him is either mean and picking on him OR is angry with him for some unknown reason — forget that he DESERVES to be chastised! (like when an older brother has friends over and the 12 y/o insists on staying in the room and participating, even though it’s clear that the older kids are totally annoyed by his antics)

‘nuff said…

Menana - go to Athens Newspapers Inc. here — you might want to check out the covington/conyers area as well or even Madison (although that would be a fair drive itself, i guess), things seem to be growing in that direction to some extent

In Idol news:

Former “American Idol” contestant and Fort Myers resident Vonzell “Baby V” Solomon, 24, was detained Tuesday after security at Southwest Florida International Airport discovered a gun in her luggage.

Lee Port Authority spokeswoman Barbara-Ann Urrutia said the gun was not loaded, and Solomon had reportedly forgotten she had it in her luggage. The weapon was found as Solomon was making her way through the TSA checkpoint on a U.S. Airways flight around 12:15 p.m. Advertisement

The gun was confiscated, and Solomon was issued a notice to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a weapon into an airport. Solomon does have a concealed weapons permit, but carrying it into an airport is a violation of that permit.

Oops!

Menana, always a pleasure to help out a pal! If you get any interviews over this way, let me know, i’ll figure out somewhere we could meet for lunch/happyhour/whatever, LOL!

Menana, if you want to ask Rodney for my email address, you have my permission to do so, i’ve told Rodney that you might ask at some point, and we can communicate directly that way. Rodney: this permission is for Menana only

I understand the need for TSA’s diligence … but was the luggage checked luggage? if you can’t pack the weapon, in that manner, how do you transport it from one location to another if you are flying? i thought you could put an unloaded gun in your suitcase, you just could not carry it in carry-on or on your person. guess i was wrong! dang! LOL

linny, whenever hubby goes hunting in NY he brings his own gun. I don’t remember all the details but the gun has to be stored in a lockable case, it cannot be loaded and all the ammunition needs to be stored separately. Then you have to notify TSA, so they can inspect the contents of the gun case and watch, then confirm you have locked it. Then it is put in the cargo hold.

There are people who can carry a gun on board but they usually have something to do with law enforcement(this includes a large number of specially trained pilots)
