6/9: What other reality shows to watch?

Personally, I am watching “So You Think You Can Dance” but I’m not a good judge of dance and will likely blog about it only if something unusual is happening. CMT has “Can You Duet” but honestly, who needs that? There was a Cumming, Ga. gal on it for awhile but she was eliminated in the final six.

I’m going to give “Nashville Star” a spin. I have watched it the past few seasons. The only big star that show has generated is Miranda Lambert—- and she didn’t win. (Buddy Jewell, the first winner, had two hits, then disappeared.) The big difference is it’s now on NBC instead of USA. That means a somewhat bigger audience. (We already know how many stars “Idol” has generated in the country world alone.)

I am also following “Last Comic Standing” and “America’s Got Talent.” And of course, “Project Runway” is coming back. (Too soon, in my opinion. Give it a rest, Bravo! Then again, the network probably needs to squeeze one more out before ceding the show to Lifetime.).

I’m semi-following “The Bachelorette” only because the Newnan gal DeAnna Pappas is on it. ABC seems to have a panoply of new reality shows coming out this summer, plus the return of “The Mole.” I may sample a few of them and see what’s worth keeping on the DVR. As for “Big Brother,” no thank you.

Anything else worth catching?

In “Idol” news:

-This is a slow day cos I’m actually linking to a Los Angeles blog chronicling the history of Ryan Seacrest’s hair styles over the years, such as the blond tips, the greased, highlighted and streaked days, the darker plummage, et. al. Seacrest thinks he looked worst season one. Anyway, here’s the photo gallery of Seacrest hair over the years. He’s eligible for a new Emmy category for best host of a reality program (though Simon Cowell has no category to fit what he does.).

-“Best Week Ever” on VH1 highlighted that TMZ video where Clay Aiken got a bit peeved and smacked a photographer when queried about his baby. In case you missed it, you can view it here..

-Taylor Hicks debuted as the Teen Angel on “Grease” on Broadway. A fan site, righthickssave.wordpress.com has photos! Since this person has exclusive photos, I’m not going to be rude and copy it over here. His gray locks are in somewhat in a pompadour and his white shirt is open to show off lots of chest hair. And he plays the harmonica at one point.

-And this was inevitable: lesser known former “Idols” are converging on Branson, Missouri! Here’s the press release: “Starting June 20, six of your favorite performers from the #1 smash-hit television show “American Idol” will be featured in 2 to 4 week runs with different performers rotating in and out every 4 weeks. The show runs through October 26. From June 20 to July 20, “America’s Favorite Finalists” will feature Season 6’s Haley Scarnato and Brandon Rogers, Season 4’s Scott Savol and Vonzell Solomon, Season 2’s Carmen Rasmussen and Season 1’s RJ Helton.” (formerly of Cumming.) [The press release misspelled Carmen’s last name so I fixed it.]

This will give me an excuse to catch up with the likes of Scott, Vonzell, Carmen and R.J. I’ll try to talk to each of them at some point this summer. At least 20 other “Idol” contestants have also committed to doing two to four week runs. Twenty? Wow! Gotta pay the bills!

There is a new reality show coming on ABC and I think it is called Wipe Out. The players have to do an obstacle course without falling into the water. From the previews, it looks to be fairly entertaining. Not exactly sure when it premiers.

LOL, i knew someone would bring up HK again! I tried…i really did, guys, but i just canNOT get into it.

i found a website once that has lots of “reality show information” on it, i’ll see if i can find it again, Rodney, and post the link. If I remember correctly, it had lot of shows listed, and tidbits on most of them.

Can’t forget Joey Fatone and MelB’s upcoming “office” competition where they each take people from an office setting and “teach” them to sing and dance, and then the teams compete….coming to an office near someone OTHER than me [you do NOT want me singing and dancing for anyone other than hubby], I HOPE!

and Cameron from Dancing with the Stars last year has a game show where families win stuff for their homes and the other family team can try to win their stuff away from them! ewwww! that’s MEAN!

My problem is going to be trying to watch all the reality shows, I’m already watching several and might miss one because there is so many of them and I tend to forget every once in awhile when they are coming on.

It is also hot and I’m delirious!

I’m actually looking forward to Project Runway but I tape the episodes cuz the show has longer commercial breaks than Lost.

Re Clay clubbing the TMZ reporter…good for him!

Re Taylor as Teen Angel…I looked at the photos…he looks so old! And there were so many photos…the song isn’t that long.

Menana…Wipe Out is based on those Japanese game shows, which are hilarious. It should be good!

I understand that Gordon Ramsey is going to do another season of Kitchen Nightmare. It is a bit tamer than Hell’s Kitchen and you end up seeing a softer side to Gordon, at least in the last part of the show he’s a bit softer. It might be something to watch if HK is too much for you.

Joey Fatone is becoming the next Reality TV w**. Whatever happened to Fear Factor? Sure it got kind of old, but Joey Fatone is someone I’d like to see eat a cockroach or two.

Well I made it through the termination process, but got the life scared out of me. I’ve got to tell ya’ll about it. The employee had only been employed for 3 months. His supervisor caught him stealing today and called me to ask about the policy on stealing was. That is an automatic dismissal offense. The super brings the employee to my office for me to do the dirty. I explained the offense and what the results are. He became combative, argumentative, belligerent, and totally unglued. He threaten me and the super, who had left my office, and when I asked him to leave the premises, he jumped from his chair and drew back his fist at me. At that moment, the plant manager came into my office and the two of them began arguing, He finally left as I was calling the cops. The employee came back in and came back to my office where the manager and I were still talking. The next thing we knew, we had a loaded gun in our faces. Talk about nearly passing out. I froze and couldn’t move. About that time the cops came and was told about the gun. They cleared the office of the other employees and arrested the employee without incident. By that time I was shaking like a rag and was to scared to even cry. Now this man was about 300 pounds and well over 6 feet tall and here I am 5’1” and about 110 pounds. I just knew that he was going to hit me. I have never had this happen in all the years I have been in HR and hope to God, it will never happen again. Scared is not the word to describe what I was feeling. I just think God it all ended okay. On my way home, it hit me like a ton of bricks and then I lost my cool. My nerves were totally shot to hell and back. Don’t mean to bend ya’ll ears, but I feel better just putting the whole episode down. I would not want to wish that on my worst enemy and hope that no one has to go through something as scary as that. Thanks for letting me vent on here. I just had to get it out. One conciliation, I went directly to Bath and Body Works and loaded up. Now, that made me feel better.

Well its almost time for Bachelorette so I will shut up for now, but will try to be abck in a little while.

Again, thanks for listening to me ramble about my experience today.

I don’t know Menana. I think the sound quality is just awful. Taylor Swift didn’t even sound that good. I haven’t been too impressed with the contestants so far and am a little embarrassed for country music overall. Look forward to hearing some other opinions on this one.

I watched The Mole last week and just couldn’t get into it. I don’t understand what is going on.

Dawn, you hit it on the head. The sound mix quality AGAIN (just like on Fox’s AI) is NOT good for the viewing audience — it may be fine in-studio, but over the airwaves, it becomes more “noise” and less “music” to me. I felt like both Shawn Mayer (the brunette) and the redhead that almost went home, Allison, both were totally dissed on the sound quality from their mics. As was that perty young fella (don’t remember his name, LOL! too busy lookin’ at the bod to catch the name!) but of all the contestants, the last lady -Melissa Lawson- was by far and away the best performer, best vocalist, and all-round best of the n ight IMHO, followed by Coffey (who’s mic-ing was ALSO lacking IMHO) I was sorry to see Charlie go, but not surprised.

i hope if the producers/ judges/ whoever watch it back they’ll catch the problem and fix it, because it WILL make a difference for viewers!!

The 3 sisters (Pearl Heart) were delightful, and i like Third Town or whatever their name is (the 3 guys)… acapella, the 2 friends, the young girls-Sophia and Laura-are excellent — but agreed they need to stop singing to each other and draw in the audience into their little “circle”. Gabe Garcia has a LOT of potential too.

for country music fans, you might want to check out AngryCountry.com they seemed to have some good reviews there of things related

GOOOOOOOD MORNING ONE AND ALL!!!!!!

Time to rise and shine and enjoy another day the Good Lord has provided. May this day be better than yesterday.

Thanks for the info on Nashville Star. I recorded it and will try to watch it tonight. From the sound of it, I may noy enjoy it to much, but will watch anyway.

On the Mole, I think Bobby just may be it. For him to be so young, he is so fragil and not a team player.

Thanks DawnH and Linny for the concern and hugs about my experience yesterday. That is one thing no one should have to go through. I guess you don’t fire anyone. You can bet I will be leary in the future and will leave my office door open.

Time to finish getting dressed for work, so I will talkl to you all later this morning.

Morning!

We had ourselves a little thunder storm last night. My lawn is extremely grateful.

Menana…..what a horrible experience! Glad that you are ok(at least physically). You’ll be seeing that guy in your head for a long time.

The Mist was only so-so. Had some VERY scary moments, some very funny moments(deliberately, not accidentally)and some very silly moments(accidentally, not deliberately) King horror is tough to put on screen. His books are so vivid but the translation to screen hurts the story. Hubby and I both had the impression that this was originally made for TV….there seemed to be perfect places for commercials. The Shawshank Redemption is still King’s best film adaptation. That one will be hard to beat.

Good morning everyone! I did watch NS last night, and liked parts of it, but hated others. Billy Ray Cyrus was abysmal as the host. After every performance, he said “Wow! Fantastic! What do you think, judges?” Same words every time. Got on my nerves something awful. He was stiff as could be. He looks great, but boy, he needs lessons from Seacrest. Ryan makes the transition from performance to the judges seamless. There is no awkward commentary on the person who has just performed. That is the part I absolutely hated.

What I liked was Gabe Garcia. He is far and away one of the two best true country artists on the show. I loved, loved, loved the last performer, Melissa, the 32 year old mother. Both of them were head and shoulders above everyone else—at least last night. The male model that linny talked about is easy on the eyes, but he cannot sing. These are just my thoughts and MHO.

Thanks for all the concern on my experience. It was a horrible thing to experience. But, today is a new day and yesterday is gone, so I will move forward and will try to put it away. I will say that when I walked into my office this morning, my stomach got butterflies.

I will watch Nashville Star tonight and then I can join the conversation on who done what. As far as BRC is concern, just seeing him on DWTS, he always seems alittle uptight and I can’t see him being a good host. However, I will say that he is good on Hanna Montana. Of course, there he is acting and has had hours of rehearsal. Vince Gill would have made a much better host.

If any of you watched the Mole last night, what is your take and who do you think is the mole? Lets do the Mole talk.

harrietth looks like we’re on similar pages — Melissa by far and away the best, Gabe and Coffey were excellent — male model was nice eye candy for the girls, which means he won’t last long, LOL.

What i DO like is that they were allowed to compete in solo, duet, and trio formats. nice change from JUST the solo guy or gal. some different sounds to put into the mix. The young girls need some work but they DO harmonize nicely, but the two trios were potentially very good — not last night so much but looking at what they MIGHT be able to do in the future…

at least we were only subjected to about 10 actual minutes of “audition buffoons” — told hubby when he got home from work to just FF through the first half hour, he’d miss the auditions, the gabbledygook talk, and taylor swift, who is just a hot mess as far as i’m concerned. she has a little girl voice, not particularly a musical talent as far as I can see… but someone loves her, enough to pay her way into airplay, i guess. trying to be objective, she’s CUTE, but i don’t think she’s gorgeous sexy hot or anything.

I will give her props for one thing tho…. when asked what advice she’d give the contestants, one of the things she said is “treat people with respect — without your fans you wouldn’t be there”

I was hoping that BRC would be more like he is when he’s casual — but you’re right, he’s stiff and repetitive… boooooooring!

I haven’t finished watching Nashville Star - have about 30 minutes left. Stopped to watch The Mole. I am not sure who it is, but I think it is a guy this year - just a hunch. But man, they are not going to win any money at the rate they are going!!

Menana - I am sorry for what you went through. I am not sure how I would feel going back into that office. At my last job, I was required to sit outside my boss’s office when she let people go - I was her “security” so to speak. I HATED it - but no incidents…

linny, I thought Jewel did a good job of being straightforward, as did the other judges. There are no “Paulas” on this panel of judges—nobody to soft-peddle rejection. I miss last year’s judges, too, but these have more of an edge, which maybe is a good thing. I agree about the duos and trios, but none of them—last night, at least—were even in the same ballpark with Gabe Garcia and Melissa, IMO. Have to say that BRC was my major disappointment, since I think he has a good presence and looks good. He was so stiff and out of place there last night. The show would have been much better with someone else. And, for crying out loud, stop with the “Wow! Fantastic!” Not all the performaces warranted such exclamation and praise, and it was awkward when he threw it to the judges.

Oh, yes. I meant to comment on song selection on NS. I thought it was supposed to be looking for a COUNTRY act. Hey ya’ll. I’ve been following this blog for a while since AI and I enjoy everyone’s comments and stories. Menana, that is the scariest thing I have ever heard. Your work should have given you at least a couple of days off to recover. Glad you are ok. Nashville Star was a fun show! I never really watched it when it was on CMT, even ‘tho I am a country fan. I LOVE John Rich! He is a doll. And he sure tells it like it is. Not so sure about Jewell. She had a problem with interrupting. We’ll see how she does. I thought Gabe and the two young girls who sang Stand By Your Man were really good. The 32 year old mom wasn’t bad, either. I agreed with the judges about getting rid of Charlie. He came out Garth Brooks gangbusters and that turned everyone off, IMO. There are a lot of old school rock and blues songs that are being re-done country. The Janis Joplin song has been countryfied already. Big and Rich did a country version of ACDC’s Shook Me All Night Long.

I know that lots of pop songs have been done “country,” but I think on a show that is looking to find a COUNTRY star, the performers should at least make an attempt to do a COUNTRY song. There is enough time to pick whatever, once established. It would be the same thing as an AI contestant coming on first thing and doing country music. I know AI has a place for that, but not at first, when the object is to become the AI. And, by the way, I love ACDC’s music, but hate it when it is countrified.

The worst country-fication of a song done by an Idol contestant has to be awarded to Kristy Lee’s version of Eight Days a Week.

You have to remember that Janis Joplin was actually a texas gal, and when she sang/screamed Piece of My Heart, she SOUNDED like a country singer gone acid rock. In fact a lot of her stuff has a very countrified flavor - just listen to Me and Bobby McGee!

Deirdre, I totally agree with you about Kristy Lee and Chikezie. I thought Chikezie was really good and got booted off too soon. Kristy Lee was just a pretty girl with a good voice…nothing to write home about. I can’t remember anyone else doing a country version of anything. Even Dolly Parton’s songs didn’t sound all that country.

No, linny. The country version of Me and Bobby McGee was done by Roger Miller. In no way did I ever think of Joplin as country. There is a huge difference in the two approaches to that song. IMO.

all you have to do — IN MY OPINION, LOL — is listen to Janis — you can HEAR the country/blues/folk in her voice — and believe me, i listed to a LOT of Joplin in the 60s-70s!!! And yes i am aware of Roger Miller — another of my favorite performers, btw!

“Janis Joplin did alot of dope and had alot of unprotected sex that later killed her..she was 35 years old when she died.”

That’s awesome! You need to throw Southern Comfort in there someplace. Flats, the blog historian.

flats, there WAS no control on sexual behavior during that period. I know SOME people were in control, but the culture was very permissive of promiscuity then. Janis was just more high profile with it, and pitifully so. Her life was sad.

JT you hit the nail on the head — SoCo had a LOT to do with Ms. Joplin’s demise, long before the heroin finished her off. Guess you had to be there. wikipedia has a fairly good bio of her life and music if anyone is interested.

I’m off to get a haircut. Be back in a bit.

In the meantime…the 60’s and early 70’s coined the phrase ‘sex, drugs and rock&roll’ Almost everyone in Joplin’s age group participated in that particular philosophy

The timeline for AIDS begins in 1981. The virus was found, via studying old cases AFTER the AIDs and related viruses were discovered, to have existed in 1959, but it was not widespread nor even known about until the 80’s.

so no, in the late 60’s and early 70’s … AIDS was not an issue, it had not even been experienced and identified as a disease yet. And even in those days, media played up some aspects of life, and the hippy culture was the target of the times.

again, guess you had to BE there.

Here is my favorite interview with Janis that happened on the old Dick Cavett Show in 1970—the year she died. It is especially poignant during the portion where she discussed going back to her high school reunion. It is worth watching for no other reason than it shows her humnanity and vulnerability. At least IMO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOTEDnQ4Fvk

linny, the first time I remember hearing about AIDS was in 1985 or so. It definitely was NOT an issue in the 60s and 70s. There would have been no sexual revolution had it been.

Dawn, check out the Wikipedia bio of JJ — there are some facts in there that are totally un-talked-about, LOL! but no, not a Lesbian. And while she ended up having a Heroin problem, her problems with substance abuse started much earlier, with Southern Comfort. She drank. A LOT.

Woodpappy: Hope you son will be okay. Now days, it doesn’t hardly pay to terminated an employee. Just yesterday in Duluth, an employee of a radio station that was terminated in March came back to the station with a fire bomb and set it off. A fire was started, and the man and an employee was seriously burned. What are the crazies thinking of when they resort to violent actions like these? They are either plain stupid or crazy, but probably a combination of both. You can bet from here on out, I will make it a point to have a male manager in my office when I am firing someone, whether it be a female or male. If I had taken a few days off, I would have still had to come in and face my office sooner or later. By coming back today, I faced my fears and can hopefully but it all behind me and move forward.

JD: You should give Nashville Star a try. It is a pretty good hours watch. It is not as big or popular as AI, but still is pretty good. They change judges and host just about every season which keeps it interesting.

LeeAnn Rimes also recorded Me and Bobby McGee and did a heck of a job on it. She did a country-rock version and it sounded really good. You can youtube it to hear her version. I think you all will like it. Kris Kristofferson wrote it in 1971 while he and Janis was having an affair and if I remember correctly, it was a number one hit for her. This song has been recorded by many artists including Elvis.

To Carri and JD, I say welcome aboard and hope you both stick around for the long haul.

The economic situation adds volatility to an already volatile situation when it comes to firing someone. Even if they are slackers, the idea that they don’t know where the next paycheck is coming from can really set them off. And, add to that that some of them are already unstable, and that is a recipe for disaster. It is one of the most dangerous things an employer can do these days. Very scary out there. As I said before, someon very dear to me was the victim of a man with a gun who chose to use it.

harrieth - You are so right. People will react accordingly to any situation and I really do sympathize with anyone who loses their job. However, when the employee causes their termination by stealing, how much sympathy can you have for them? Its the family they are supporting that will suffer in the long run. Adding to it, they will not be able to draw unemployment benefits and will have a difficult time getting other employment. They just don’t think about what they are doing.
