5/23: What did we learn from season 7?

What did we learn from season 7 of “American Idol”?

  • Love those instruments! We’ve been wondering why they didn’t do this sooner. Folks like Bo Bice would have truly appreciated it. This year, the instrument rule two final five contestants we probably wouldn’t have otherwise gotten in Brooke White and Jason Castro. Clearly, the producers liked the addition, too, and it will be back in 2009.

  • No Sanjaya sideshow worked fine with me (though train wreck Amanda Overmyer verged on caricature at times). Sure, there are folks who watched “Idol’ for the spectacle of the Chicken Littles of the world. But “Idol” needed a year off from that to bolster its legitimacy, however amusing it might have been to have little politico Kyle Ensley in the top 24 or flamboyant Danny Noriega in the top 12.

  • That there’s still talent out in dem woods. We’re a big country and thank goodness the likes of Syesha, Brooke, Jason and the two Davids still exist, that the talent herd hasn’t been completely sucked dry.

  • Experience is not a sin. Some folks still gripe that Carly and Michael and Kristy alreadly had shots already in the “biz,” but nobody knew who they were so who cares? I thought it added an interesting element, a nice mix of the naive and new such as Jason and the almost desperate in Carly.

  • Forgetting lyrics is okay. Clearly, this is not a deal breaker for viewers, that it sometimes humanized the contestant more than demonized them as in Brooke and David A. But in the case of Jason “uh uh uh uh” Castro near the end, it solidified in people’s minds that he was simply ready to go home at that point. Memorizing two songs in one week is hard, dude!

  • Country isn’t quite king or queen but it certainly helped Kristy Lee Cook. She lasted far longer than most expected and being the single representative in the country world kept her alive weeks longer than she otherwise should have.

  • I pledge allegiance… Pull the patriotic card out when needed. Kristy Lee Cook, at a point in the competition where she needed help, pulled the Lee Greenwood song out. Brilliant! Archuleta later made a similar, though less successful, move by opting for Neil Diamond’s “America.”

  • Expand your vocabulary, dawg. Randy’s tiresome, limited choice of descriptions got especially tiresome this year. Everyone was “molten red hot” and “on fire,” and heck, “you can sing the phone book,” too.

  • Don’t wave your hands like you just don’t care. If “Idol’ brings back the mosh pit, how about recruiting some minorities, maybe even a male or two. And prohibit them from “spontaneously’ waving their hands in semi-time to the music.

  • Bring the band closer to the stage. The new layout kept the band so far away, I think that often made it harder for the singers to connect with them. The times when they brought members of the band near the contestants were often quite effective. (See Chikezie.)

  • Q&A quandary Yes, that Q&A was a time waster if we ever saw one. And posting the questions on that board, then having the caller ask them was pure redundancy. It will surely be gone next week if Fox’s promise of 30 minute results shows holds.

Add your own. Those were just a few off the top of my head.

In other “Idol” news;

-USA Today reports that on Tuesday, teleprompters were in use for the singers. Can’t imagine David Cook needed them but perhaps Archuleta did. I don’t know if either copped to using them. I haven’t read the post-show press conferences yet.

-NY Daily News posed five reasons why David Cook won, including the integrity he showed. One great point: he refused to let the show exploit his brother’s ills. That is true and I respect that greatly..

-MTV asks why Archuleta lost. His “aw shucks gosh gosh gosh” personality hurt him, yes. People hate the blatant frontrunner, yes. He was pre-coronated, annoyingly, yup. He had that creepy stage dad, check. And he was one dimensional, check, check.

Good points.

I wasn’t as impressed by instruments this year; I think that is because, as you mentioned, Brooke and Jason went as far as they did by hiding behind them. The David’s both proved that using instruments can add to the performance without overshadowing the performer, hopefully we see more of that type of instrument use next year.

I’d be happy if I never, ever, heard Randy telling someone that they can blow. At the same time I’m sick and tired of him talking about pitch.

Another thing that needs to be addressed is the turning on and off of microphones. The group sings this year appeared to be a series of solo’s linked together with piped in filler. During the finale when the Idol’s were singing the group songs it would cut to a solo and the person’s microphone wasn’t working at the start. How was it that we heard them all singing together, but their microphones were off?

I have really grown tired of Randy and Paula (especially Randy) interupting Simon when he is giving his critique. If Simon gives an unpopular opinion, all you hear is Randy going “BOOOOOO! BOOOOOO!” or Paula going off about “colors” or some other crap like that. It’s one thing for the audience to boo, but for the other judges to be downright rude is unacceptable. As Simon always reminds everyone, “it just an opinion.” Simon always seems to give a fair, honest opinion…even if we don’t agree…and he at least appears to go back and review the show after the fact and will apologize if he gave an unfair critique…as he did with David Cook.

By Negativo

Neg’s BRILLIANT suggestions (carried over from prev. thread):

1. Fire the judges, keep the host. Quite frankly, the trio have grown complacent, self-absorbed, old and lazy. They offer absolutely nothing original, intelligent or constructive to say whatsoever, and are now almost characatures of themselves. They are the biggest reason that Idol looks, feels, smells and sounds mothballed. Ryan still is current, does a nice job, and is the real face of the show, but we need a house cleaning of the judges. Just can all three and start over with new judges who are still big in today’s music industry.

2. No more mentors over age 50. Come on…who really believes that 60-something former stars like Dolly Parton or Neil Diamond are relavent to young, aspiring stars who never heard their music before. Mariah was a great choice this year to mentor because she’s young enough to connect, but old enough to have been around the block and give meaningful advice.

3. Dump the insipid “Idol Gives Back” garbage. Self-indulgent, tedious telethons do not interest anybody under the age of 60. It needs to go.

4. Involve the Idol song coach more in the show. Have some “behind the scenes” looks, and add segments where she expresses insight and opinions about the contestents.

5. Shrink the age gap. There is something creepy and uncomfortable about seeing 16 and 17 year olds competing with 29 year olds. Let’s make it 18-27 so it looks more like contemporaries competing and less of a child vs adult contest.

That’s enough for now. What say you?

Negativo, I’m with you on all your thoughts except for the judges firings. I think Simon makes the show. When he goes the show goes too in my opinion. I like the way he is so brutally honest with each one. Now, as for Randy or Paula, throw them to the wolves if you’d like.

By DawnH

May 23, 2008 1:01 PM | Link to this

And here are my LESS than brilliant comments from the previous thread:

  1. Get rid of the Ryan / Simon irritating comedy hour. Separate Simon from Paula. I want to see him feel up Randy all evening.

  2. If it is, in fact, a singing competition - let’s hear them sing! Not 30 seconds for each song, but enough of the song that we actually recognize it.

  3. Linny - AMEN - get rid of the mosh pit.

  4. Throw in a few more commercials -35 minutes of advertising in a 60 minute show just isn’t enough for me!

  5. Again, per Linny, FORBID Randy from using the terms dawg, dude, dabomb, and “you can sing the phone book, man”. In fact, insisting that he only speak English works for me.

  6. Give Paula a list of critiques to use so that we actually know what she is trying to say. They could list them in columns with headings good and bad.

Just off the top of my head…

I also agree with Neg that the coaches should be more involved. For those who aren’t so old that they would nod off, let them sit on the judges panel and critique.

Disagree with Neg on getting rid of Simon. Randy is full of B/S, Paula can’t get out of her happy place long enough to make a logical statement. Like him or not, Simon is honest and at least I understand him.

Interesting stuff there, Rodney. I have to ask a question, and I wonder if anyone else is wanting this as well:

Is there anyway that AI and/or iTunes will make available as a downloadable mp3 DC’s performance with ZZ Top from the other night?? I’ve looked all over the Web, and all I can find is the video — which is good. Don’t get me wrong. But, I’d really like to have it as a mp3.

I’ve looked all over AI’s website, and can’t figure out how to send them a message to ask about it.

Also, does anyone know how we can send a message to the AI producers on recommendations for discography of artists, as well as for mentors for their consideration for season 8?

Negs…we did that a few days back, week or so maybe? But in the spirit of your request, I’ll enter a few items I’d like to see changed for next year:

1 - FIRST and foremost in my mind is to return the Band/Orchestra/Backup Singers to Stage level (or only SLIGHTLY elevated on a dias behind the stage, as in previous years and as at the Kodak. I absolutely HATE the “penthouse” bandstands!!! I think they REALLY hurt the TV viewing/listening.

2-In conjunction with #1 above, GET A BETTER MIXING ENGINEER FOR TELEVISION AUDIENCES. I don’t KNOW how it sounded in-house, but for me EVERY week either the Backup Singers, the Band, or BOTH were mixed too loud to even, at times, HEAR the contestant, much less be able to truly evaluate their talent for striving to hear them at ALL. The first BIG example of this problem, i think, was Kristy Lee Cook’s “country” rendition of 8 days. Partially her fault for approving the arrangement, perhaps, BUT the Band overpowered her singing entirely, making her look and sound pretty bad. But it continued with others as well, throughout the season, so often i would see a comment about the band being too loud, or the backup singers overpowering the lead vocals … and i felt that way myself at LEAST 30% of the performances on average!!!

3-get rid of the freaking so-called ‘mosh pit’ — First of all, as my 21-y/o says, “that AIN’T a Mosh Pit” He said he’d be happy to go out to LA and show those wannabes what a REAL most pit is like. Funny mental picture THERE!

4-I know they will not get “rid” of Ryan or any of the Judges. However, (a) tone down the so-called repartee between Ryan and Simon, (b) have Simon keep his freaking hands OFF of Paula, and (c) in the off season, teach Randy some new adjectives and terms to use on the show. Dawg and Dude and DaBomb are just getting a little bit OLD. (d) i don’t think there is anything we can do to help Paula, so just leave her alone, LOL

how’s that for starting a discussion, Negs?

and…

oh, thanks Dawn… one more from me … well more than one…

5 - results show - cut out the BS with the “phone calls” — it’s INSULTING to the viewers, IMHO.

6 - Cut out a lot of the BS talk during the competition shows — let them sing more (as Dawn says) so we can actually recognize the song — just eliminating the bickering between the judges and between the judges and ryan would allow at LEAST 30 seconds MORE per contestant!!!

By Negativo

I see what you guys are saying about Simon being more blunt and critical than the others. However, as the years go on he’s more just going through the motions, often looking bored and playing the role of Simon Cowell from central casting. He seems cartoonish, and frequently gets exposed as embarassingly ignorant of contemporary music.

Also, his tired old lines about being too “cabaret”, “cruise ship” and “singing drunk at a wedding” have become painfully cliche.

Dump them all…the show and the talent is bigger and better than the judges.

As for Paula, she was a bimbo, one-hit, 1980s dance-pop star with no vocal skills. Couple that with zero brains, a substance a buse problem, and the inability to put a single sentence together, and what the hell is she doing on TV judging American Idol? Face it, she was a has-been when she was originally chosen for the show because more successful and qualified options didn’t want any part of this before it went big. Still, at least in the first two years she could offer some relatively coherent advice, but now…

Randy actually is the saddest case of them all. He had a relatively good career in the biz, and in his first two seasons offered quality, thoughtful comments as a judge. Now? He’s a pathetic joke who just repeats the same, lame lines over and over with no real depth at all. He’s so caught up in his own celebrity that he has gone on complete autopilot as a judge, becoming a lame characature act of himself instead.

And

tangentally on topic… did anyone besides me watch last night’s season opener for SYTYCD???

I love the way they handle the audition shows, frankly — just a FEW goofballwannabejerkos but MOSTLY some really REALLY REALLY REALLY good talent … frustratingly so in fact because you know they have to limit, and you might disagree with their assessment, but wow some of the dancers are inFREAKINGcredible!!

AND the judges have a LOT of fun, and don’t hold back at ALL. I actually am beginning to really like Nigel Lythgoe a LOT more than Simon Cowell!!!

“a lame caricature act of himself” – I think that applies to all three. Right now I wouldn’t like to see the judges dumped, but they need to realize that we are tired of the same old shtick. If those three don’t change things up they will go from being the captains of a listing ship to being the torpedoes that are the root cause of the sinking.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

May 23, 2008 2:03 PM | Link to this

JT, as usual, you have put the point succinctly and sharply in focus! [regarding the “judges”] … and that reminds me … It’s always been a bit of a puzzle to me… ONCE the top 24 are chosen, those three people sitting out there at the microphones behind the so-called Mosh Pit are no longer “judges” — at the point of the top 24 they become ONLY commentators. They have absolutely NO direct control over the fate of the contestants. While they MAY (or may NOT) be influential by their commentary, they are no longer judges people. So…

point number 7: STOP CALLING THEM “JUDGES” — find, make up, coin, or borrow some OTHER term for the 3 buffoo…. err people, that is… who make comments after each performance.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

May 23, 2008 2:05 PM | Link to this

and…. Limit Ryan to 10 words or less after each performance, NOT counting the repetition of the number to dial.

The proper term would be “critic” - defined as “one who forms and expresses judgments of the merits, faults, value, or truth of a matter”. Just as food critics or movie critics, they form their opinion, give it, and then let the chips fall where they may.

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

May 23, 2008 3:16 PM | Link to this

good choice of terms, bigdaddy, thanks for the input! all i know is “judge” is a DEFINITE misnomer of their position once they no longer determine who stays or goes; as opposed to, say, Rock Star, SYTYCD, Dance Crew, and NGAB, to name a few, where people vote, but then for the results, the “Judges” take the bottom votegetters (2 or 3 usually) and make them “sing off” or “dance off” and decide who stays or goes; or DWTS where the judges’ votes count half weight and the public’s votes count half weight in determining who is the “least best” and thus goes home.

I personally think that their (the critics) opinions, judgements, whatever you want to call them SHOULD carry some weight. You then conceivably wouldn’t have the likes of Castro, Sanjaya, etc, etc, etc sticking around as long. Then the contestants couldn’t take the night off and soley rely on their popularity. Castro would have been gone long before the final 4, Carly and Michael Johns would have stayed around longer and might have made the competition even more intriguing. However, American Idol is what it is…a popularity contest…not a singing contest as some would imply. For me, its simple…who’s CD would you go out and pay your hard-earned money for…especially with gas prices at nearly $4 a gallon….?

By Negativo

I personally think their (the critics) opinions, judegements, whatever you want to call them SHOULD carry weight in the competition. It certainly would allow the cream to rise to the top. Contestants wouldn’t get away with packing it in on a given week and they would have to be on top of their game every week. Although entertaining in a wrong sort of way, you wouldn’t have the Castro’s, Sanjaya’s, etc, etc, etc, mucking up the competition and conceivably, you would have better performers lasting longer. We probably would have seen Castro out sooner than the final 4, and most likely seen Carly and Michael Johns make it further, which they deserved. However, American Idol is what it is…a popularity contest…not a singing contest like some would imply…bottom line, I look at it this way…whose CD would I pay my hard-earned money for…especially with gas at $4 a gallon.

I like a lot of your suggestions - especially with the stage set up and getting rid of the stupid hand waving chicks!!! How about instead of getting rid of the judges, we put them in a different order, Simon, Randy and then Paula. This way it would give Simon a chance to be heard without the “Oscar Music” cutting him off. Randy would seperate him from Paula so he can’t be touching her the whole time. It would also give Paula a chance to figure out what to say….oh, and restrict her from getting up and dancing during the performances!! Come on now, I thought your back hurt?!

Good Afternoon to All!!!!!

Enjoyed the thoughts RH. Is there anyway that we can start an email going around suggesting changes and then forwarding it to AI? For instance, say if I sent one to all my email friends, they forwarded it to theirs and so on with a cc to AI, would this be a feasible way to get the attention of the producers. If I sent an email to 10 people, they inturn sent it to 10 and so on, that would be alot of emails getting to AI, if we are able to get an email address. This is just a thought and if we can do it, it just may have an impact. I am open to other suggestions as to how we may get some changes made. IMHO, changes do need to be made and for the better.

I want to wish you all a safe and wonderful holiday. Have a good time, play hard and above all, DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!!!!!! Just stay safe. Hubby and I are headed to LaGrange to pick up dad then headed to Charleston SC tomorrow morning for a week. Will check this site later tonight.

Concerning the instruments, i don’t think is great idea’s what about a singer who don’t have any talents to play guitar but have a wonderful voice? I forgot to do this last season so I’ma do it for this season. I post my favorite performance(s) from each of the top 12 during their time on the show. Basically ones that I liked THE MOST from them. Some are ok, but not my absolute favorite. And lucky for me there is at least one from each that I liked. You all should do it!!

  1. David Hernandez- “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”

  2. Amanda Overmyer- “I Hate Myself For Loving You”

  3. Chikezie Eze- “She’s A Woman”

  4. Ramiele Malubay- Unfortunately there was nothing REAL special that I got from her, but there were a couple I liked… “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”, “In My Life”

  5. Michael Johns- “We Are The Champions”, “It’s All Wrong, But It’s All Right”, “Dream On” and “Light My Fire” was ok.

  6. Kristy Lee Cook- Again nothing REAL special from her, but these were ok, “You’re No Good”, “Anyway”

  7. Carly Smithson- “Crazy”, “I Drove All Night”, “Come Together”, “Here You Come Again”, “Superstar”

  8. Brooke White- “You’re So Vain”, “Let It Be”

  9. Jason Castro- “Hallelujah”, “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”

  10. Syesha Mercado- “Tobacco Road”, “Yesterday”, “I Will Always Love You”, “One Rock And Roll Too Many”, “Hello Again”, “Proud Mary”, “A Change Is Gonna Come”, “Fever”

  11. David Archuleta- “Shop Around”, “Imagine”, “Angels”, “Stand By Me”, “And So It Goes”, “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”

  12. David Cook- “All Right Now”, “Hello”, “Eleanor Rigby”, “Day Tripper”, “Billie Jean”, “Always Be My Baby”, “Music Of The Night”, “All I Really Need Is You”, “Baba O’Reily”, “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”, “The World I Know”, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” Man that’s a lot.

Yes, he will be my first. We will get to see the 3D ultrasound the first week of June.

Where did the time go? My baby is having a baby.

Congrats to Harmony and WE!!!

I DO have to admit, WE, that I pictured you just a bit too young for grandchildren. I guess it’s all that youthful cynicism. :-)

My favorite thing about season 7 this year was allowing the contestants to use instruments. Boy, does america have talent? Well, at least a few do. Haha. Simon leaked out that the minimum age for next year may drop from 16 to 14. Do a post on that. I don’t like that idea at all.http://mypagerankbooster.blogspot.com
