5/19: Carrie’s ACM win, Jennifer Hudson album finally coming
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
At 1:06 p.m., “Idol” publicists said scheduling conflicts mean no Q&As for either David for us poor scribes. Oh, well.
I wrote a big “Idol” package for the print edition Tuesday. The topics include a “David vs. David” faceoff, recycled from something I wrote here a week ago, a discussion of why “Idol” ratings are off and a ranking of the 10 finalists based on commercial viability, which I could bring up again as a blog topic here later in the week. Here’s the link.
-Carrie Underwood probably needs a separate room for the awards she keeps scarfing up. She won female vocalist of the year again at the ACMs Sunday night. (And congrats to Atlanta’s own Sugarland for winning song of the year with “Stay”!)
-MJ posted Kellie PIckler’s performance of a new song “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful” she wrote with Taylor Swift. (She lost to Swift for best new female performer) As MJ noted, she was not in good vocal form:
-I was busy Thursday, then got sick so I missed this rather pertinent detail in the Fox TV announcements. They have scheduled “Idol” results shows back to 30 minutes, which was the norm until season six. Oddly, the results shows did better in season six than the performance shows, the only time that has ever happened. This year, it’s gone back to the norm of 5 to 10% fewer viewers for results than performance, which makes logical sense since there’s only 3 minutes of real news. We’ll see how desperate Fox is by spring of 2009 to see if they hold to the 30 minutes. (That means no more trumped up Q&As. Hold back the tears, people!)
-Any thoughts yet on Jennifer Hudson, who looks kind of leaden in the promos for “Sex & the City.” She pops in at 1:04 in this trailer:
-But good news for Hudson fans. Her album is set to go September, with a single “Spotlight” out June 9. More info here at E!. Ne-Yo, Robin Thicke, Diane Warren and the ubiquitous Timbaland were all involved.
-And for the second year in a row, I failed to get through the songwriting contest candidates. I fear the worst, hope for the best. I mean, after last year’s debacle, who knows? I still say “Inside Your Heaven” is the worst winner song ever but many will argue for last year’s painful “This Is My Now” that poor Jordin had to sing or Taylor’s “Do I Make You Proud?” We find out tomorrow what the song is. Bring the dramamine!

Nobody will be paying any attention to Jennifer Hudson…doesn’t matter whether she’s leaden or not. The movie isn’t about her.

30 minute results show, I can start watching them again!
Hey Flats what do you think of Kasey Kahne? I was in his hometown this weekend so I thought I would ask the expert.
The end is near, two hours of cheesy Idol goodness on Wednesday. I always like the final show, just keep Paula in the audience and all will be good.

So it’s been confirmed that Archuleta will sing “Imagine”. Ok guys simple prediction: He’s gonna win, + He is going 2nd. aka last. AGAIN.
Either way, whoever wins, I’ll ultimately be OK with, I just prefer Cook…he’s been my favorite guy of the whole thing since Top 20 week. Plus it’s all been so predictable that David A. will win, so it’s kinda a boring end to the season.. but whatever, the one who’s most popular at the end always reaches victory.. other reasons why: David A. has claimed the top spot of dialidol way early in the competition for weeks. When he had a bad performance, he remained up top somewhere, whereas Cook had a bad one, he slipped a bit toward the bottom. Also, I just think there are SOOOOO many girls out there that are obsessed with this kid…. want simple proof just look how many views his videos get on youtube lol- incredibly huge….!
I’m tellin’ ya if the producers wanted so bad for Mr. Cook to win they woulda put Syesha in the finals! :)

Sorry Justin I still don’t buy the conspiracy theory that the producers pick who will be in the finals. And, considering your prediction record, I think that this is the clearest sign yet that David Cook will win.
I’m going to help by voting for Cook are you with us?

Hey! Parents! Find a way to limit your child’s access to the cellphone/texting function tuesday night for about 4 hours. surely they’ve done SOMETHING to deserve “grounding” for ONE evening???? maybe that way, Cook’s voters can actually get more votes in than the nimble-fingered speed texters can for Archichi!!!

I’m back….Jim, if you made it to the new thread, welcome and thanks!
Here’s more stuff about the finals…from mj of course, she’s amazing!
* David Archuleta will sing “Imagine” (there is also a rumor that Clive’s choice for Archie is “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”. He chose not to spoil any of David Cook’s songs. Since Cookie’s camp is sealed up tight as a drum, we probably won’t know the songs until they are leaked right before the broadcast. * The Top 2 were able to pick their own coronation song from the Top 10 vote getters of the Idol Songwriters contest. There were only 20 songs total to begin with. Some “contest”, huh? Think TPTB didn’t like the song that got the most votes? They just changed the rules of the game midstream. Makes it hard to do the contest again next year, don’t you think? * There’s going to be another “Dead Elvis” video (last year, Celine Dion sang a “duet” with Elvis Presley), this time including several people. Blech. * The “biggest star” in the world will be there. Whatever! * Nigel confirmed that the Top 5 will sing duets with “somebody”By Deirdre

I don’t buy that the producers pick the finalists either…..mostly because it’s been pretty obvious for over a month that the 2 Davids would be the finalists…neither one of them was EVER in the bottom group.

The iggest star in the world? Justin Timberlake? (Ok, I kid)
I expected Archie to get far and hoped his personality would win me over like his voice had, but I’ve gotten tired of the “breathiness” and lack of personality. Seriously, Opie, how many times can you say “Gosh?” So I gotta say, GO COOK!
Oh, and did y’all read the story saying that per an AOL Poll Carrie is the “All-Time Most Popular American Idol Winner?” Well, duh, I mean, there’s no contest currently.

Interesting….
VFTW If David Archuleta’s voice coach can be believed, he wants everyone to know that the fix is in. Voice coach Dean Kaelin said in a Fox Utah interview that the producers really rigged things last week to help David Cook. Dean says that the producers asked David to sing his best song first, while David Cook was told to sing his best song last so that the audience would remember it better. Gaspy also practiced singing “Longer” with an uptempo beat but was then told by producers that he had to sing it slower. Why? Probably because it might have sounded better that way. Lastly, Gaspy was going to sing “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing”, which had been cleared for him for a few weeks, but the song was taken away afrom him and given to David Cook. Dean also says that Syesha wanted to use strings (probably the full orchestra that David Cook used) in one of her songs and was told she couldn’t. Who got to use the strings? David Cook of course. We believe Dean, because Idol is a shady show that does whatever it can to get the reults it wants. But what can Gaspy do (see picture for his options)? If the fix is in, the producers will stop at nothing to crown Cook. All we can do is expose the madness and try to help our gasping friend.
….is THAT fair?? Nope.

Assuming that the people voting for Syeshia are still going to vote this week, I wonder which way the majority will vote? I’m thinking Cook but who knows.
By Deirdre
May 19, 2008 5:16 PM | Link to this
Justin…the producers have often said they like to start the show with something really good and end it with something really good. That would explain why Archie sang his best song first and Cook sang his best song(which I don’t agree was his best, I thought his first song was his best)last.
This kind of stuff comes up all the time. Isn’t it up to the singers to make ALL their songs good? David Cook went last during top 3 week because it was his turn…Archie went last the week before.
Do I think the producers try to manipulate us? Sure! Why wouldn’t they? They want the best possible show.
I don’t trust what VFTW says. They are just as manipulative as the producers and have Archie as their pick.

Justin, thanks for the info.
I for one don’t believe anything that VFTW says. In my opinion they are extremely biased and have zero integrity when it comes to reporting information. A few years back they took one catty classmate of Kellie Pickler’s and reported every unsubstantiated claim as the divine truth.
So, their source may have an opinion, but it is full of holes. Holes that VFTW would like you to ignore so that they can bash Idol.
WE: I think they might be split. I don’t think her voting block was defined enough to clearly go for one over the other.

Hey guys - just catching up here, been away a couple days. Not sure if this has been posted or not, but apparently for the contestant’s choice song, DA will reprise Imagine as has been said above, and DC will do U2’s Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For. I LOVE this song choice!

Morning mushblogians!
Songluvr, thanks for the info on Cook’s song! U2! Wow!
WE…I like(and am a little surprised) by your choice for performance of the season. What I liked best about this performance was, while all the Idols were forced to step WAY outside the ‘pop’ box, David Cook managed to do it, not only successfully, but with a richness we hardly ever hear on this show.

I like the idea of picking out our favorite performances this season.
Mine:
David Cook: Always Be My Baby, Music of the Night, Hello, Billie Jean.
Carly Smithson: Here You Come Again.
Michael Johns: It’s All Wrong But It’s Alright.
Archie: Imagine, Long and Winding Road.
Chikezie: She’s a Woman.
Jason: Hallelujah.

WE, that, too is my favorite performance this whole year. The other “most memorable” performance for me is, unfortunately, Fantasia’s “Summertime” — unfortunate because it showed me how lovely she COULD sing, and i listen (as little as possible) to her now and almost cry for the abandonment of true talent for a pop noise. ah well. i doubt David Cook will be singing broadway either, but at least i don’t think he’ll completely abandon his talent, LOL!
see you guys tonight, if not before :)

Gearing up for tonight…
Yes, I’m sure the producers do a bit of string-pulling here and there (not to directly affect the outcome, but to make a more interesting show…just like any other “reality” show). And why wouldn’t any contestant want to start strong and end strong on a multiple-song night? Bookend!
Thanks for the welcomes. And yes, I can see why a large number of “regulars” are leaving the blog.

Good for you Jim..Are u having a huge party For the Finale?
By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

Actually, Jim, only a handful of “regulars” from a year ago left the blog. There are plenty of us left here; we just try to either ignore, or on occasion try to respond with humor and good grace, to the sometimes (?!?!!) annoying and persistent itch that creeps into the blog.
Come to think of it, It IS sort of like poison ivy — you have to ignore it and NOT scratch it for it to finally fade away, but unfortunately, being humans, we just HAVE to scratch every once in a while, almost reflexively, and when we do, it flares back up again. What’s a soul to do, eh?
I think good manners, grace, tolerance, patience, and especially having raised boy children, sometimes helps get us through grin
but regulars? MikeS, Deirdre, me, WE, JTesla, occasional visits from Shaun and Shay, the strange, sometimes entertaining, sometimes irate, and always verbose BlkShepherd (who used to be mstephen, i think), more that i cannot pull out of my weak brain at the moment, and a lot of the former lurkers, like Harmony and Dawn just to name a couple, have kept Rodney’s blog going, despite the efforts to drive us away.
’s cuz we love you Rodney, you do know that, right??!! ~¿@

Lara, Songluvr, Amy(cuz I know she still peeks in)mvt(posting more often…good for you), Menana, Justin. the list is quite long when you think about it. The only main difference between now and before is that we mainly stay on topic. There’s little going off on tangents(other than for Lost and sports). And because of that, there are often long pauses in the conversation(other than the interminable posting delay). We no longer talk continuously about lunch or politics or how stupid other people are…it’s mostly about Idol now…which it wasn’t ‘before’.
By Jim

Linny — I appreciate your suggestions, but unfortunately what I’ve come to notice is that this annoying itch does not go away. It’s more like a yappy little dog, always barking no matter how much you feed it or pet it or scold it or ignore it, and neither the “regulars” nor the people who “run” this blog can seem to get under control.
And the other unfortunate thing is there are plenty of other sites that have similar Idol-related information (MJ’s blog, perhaps?) that I haven’t looked into yet. Maybe their pets are more well-behaved.

Jim…the people who administer the ‘rules’ for this blog, along with all the other ajc blogs, is NOT the person who writes the blog. My suggestion…if ‘the itch’ is bothering you, go to Comment Removal Request on the left column of the blog and request a removal.
While this has been attempted on numerous occasions with this particular itch, the powers that be in the technical division of the ajc have found no legal reason for removing said itch. No rules have actually been broken by the itch, while they have definitely been broken by people responding to the itch……just as a warning…if you get my drift.

And re MJ’s blog…I have been reprimanded there for disagreeing with someone….not the kind of blog I should be posting on because I disagree with people a lot! :-) But, MJ’s is a private blog under the control of it’s host. That is not the case here.

But to be fair and honest…I agree that there’s absolutely no doubt that flats hurts the population growth on this blog(although there are plenty of people who will tell you they are here BECAUSE of him). Rodney is more than a little concerned about the number of hits this year and attributes it to a number of factors…Idol ratings being one, miscreants being another. BUT he can’t change the rules of the entire ajc blog network just to get rid of one problem on one blog.
It’s a dilemma.

And you’re right about the official American Idol blog having a larger percentage of dropouts than we have had. American Idol will be around for at least a couple more years but it’s popularity is diminishing.
Someone made a good point when they said that perfectly good performances are being ‘ho-hummed’ by the judges while a couple of contestants are praised beyond their abilities. That needs to stop!

Why is flats apparently driving people away? I apologize for the confusion but he (she - whatever!) is, overall, much less offensive than a lot of folks. Is it because of the sports stuff? There has always been a variety of topics discussed here, and that is what kept me “lurking.”

Dawn…approximately 8 regulars left here last fall because flats wanted them to go and did everything in his power to make it happen without stepping beyond the rules of the ajc blog. He, himself, has admitted this.
His behavior back then was atrocious. He has lightened up quite a bit since successfully accomplishing his mission.
