5/12: Hometown visits, Archuleta’s dad banned!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I remember when Fox did this for Diana DeGarmo four years ago in Snellville. It’s a highly orchestrated hometown visit for the final three. Here’s a summary of their trips.
-Murray, Utah. greeted David Archuleta at his high school and at a mall, where 2,000 showed up. The governor named it “David Archuleta Day.” He sang the National Anthem at the NBA playoff game though ESPN wasn’t allowed to air it because of some sort of exclusivity deal with Fox. An AT&T rep claims Archuleta drew more than comparable events for Syesha and Cook, though blog commentators in K.C. say Cook didn’t do anything specific for AT&T and brought in 10,000 people at a high school stadium. DJSlim has video of his anthem and Syesha’s, too.
-Syesha Mercado hung out in Bradenton, Fla., doing a concert at the riverfront where she sang “Proud Mary,” visiting her elementary and high school (which is in Sarasota) and singing the anthem at a Rays game. This Tampa blogger captured the scene quite nicely.. She also attended Florida International University. This Miami Herald piece claims she’s the first Floridian to make the top 3, which I’m sure makes Vonzell Solomon (top 3, season four) feel great! The story noted that Randy Jackson wants her to sing Alicia Keys’ “I Ain’t Got You”on Tuesday as the judge’s choice. And yes, Manatee County proclaimed it “Syesha Mercado Day.”
-In Kansas City, David Cook sang “Living on a Prayer” and “Always Be My Baby” at the Power & Light District and later sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at the Royals. (Thanks Tricia for the info) He leaked to the Fox 4 Morning show that he will be singing Atlanta-based Collective Soul’s “The World I Know” this Tuesday. The judges want him to sing (huh?) “First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack. How about that for strange? And yes, of course, he got to have his own “David Cook” day. Of course!
-And how about this for juicy gossip? TMZ and Associated Press both say David Archuleta’s dad Jeff was booted from the show for being a pain in the patootie. Apparently, he had insisted Archuleta add a line from Sean Kingston’s song “Beautiful Girls” into “Stand By Me,” which producers nixed. Archuleta did it anyway. It caused problems with the song’s publisher and cost “Idol” money, TMZ claims. Jeff has been nixed from the backstage although technically Archuleta is a minor and needs a guardian. I wonder how the legalities of this will play out and will Archuleta be better without his dad breathing down his neck while he rehearses with the band and vocal coach? Jeff will be able to sit in the audience, lucky guy. I heard later that Jeff is only technically banned from rehearsals and song consultations.
-For the first time since the beginning of the top 24, David Archuleta is not longer the gamblers’ presumptive favorite. Cook is now slightly ahead.

Rodney, in regards to the comment from the AT&T rep saying that Archuleta drew more fans to his signing than to comparable events from Cook/Mercado, that’s pretty much a lie, at least for Cook. I watched Cook’s entire day and there was no AT&T autograph singing. He went from the radio stations to the mini-concert in KC (which is the comparable event to Archie’s if you look at their days). His mini-concert drew 4000 from early estimates and if you look at the pics, the place was packed. People were falling out the sides of the arena. His concert at the high school drew over 10,000. You can’t see that in the overheads because the fans were forced to stay in the bleachers and only VIP were allowed on the field. Just to clarify. Not like Cook has NO fans.

Sources please! When you start to throw out funny numbers it is always best to have something to back you up. I’d love to see David Cook draw far more than Archie, but let’s not make stuff up.
I pity the poor AT&T rep that isn’t even mentioned in Rodney’s blog entry.

I just want to know what Jeff Archuleta did to the other contestants.

So ya, a high school can hold 10,000 people in the outdoor stadium

JT seems to be having a worse day than you, WE!
JT, lots of HS football stadiums can hold 10,000, especially here in the south…don’t know about Utah.
And, although an A.T.&T. rep wasn’t mentioned..the company was:
“He apparently drew far more people to his mall A&T event than comparable events for Syesha or David Cook, which isn’t a surprise.”

I see it like this. Archie was warned by AI not to add “unapproved” lyrics to his performance. But instead of following the rules he gave AI a big F U and did it anyway.
So to keep things fair, all contestants should be able sing what they want to even if the material has not been cleared.

LOL!!! JT! We’re kinda stuck with whatever Idol lets us know. I went to HS for 2 years in St Joseph, MO…about 50/60 miles from Kansas City/Blue Springs, where my cousin still lives. The high school I went to(a VERY long time ago) had stadium seating for at least 8,000…add to that the possibility that the field was also used for seating and you’ve got a good chance of seeing 10,000 people in a HS stadium. The HS stadiums are even bigger in Kansas and Oklahoma. All I’m saying is that it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that the poster is correct about numbers. Whether those numbers exceed Archie remains to be seen.
But…here’s a list for tickets provided by FOX 4 in Kansas City. The headline says that the event was sold out:
“Tickets:
* Limited to five per person. * Available starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6. First come, first serve. * Ticket Locations: Blue Springs South High School, Blue Springs High School, the Blue Springs Board of Education offices, the Chamber of Commerce office and City Hall. * Cost is free but the school district is suggesting a $5 donation to the American Cancer Society in honor of David's brother, Adam Cook. Adam has brain cancer and was able to see David perform a few weeks ago in Los Angeles. * Seating - is on a first come, first serve basis. 10,000 tickets are being given out for a 6,000 seat stadium. A ticket guarantees you entry into the stadium, but does not guarantee you a seat."I found this by googling David Cook appearance Blue Springs

I think it’s interesting that you didn’t mention that Cook recieved the honor of having it be “David Cook Day” not once but three times. It was declared “David Cook Day” in Kansas City, Blue Springs, and in the state of Missouri.
Also from MyFox4 “BLUE SPRINGS, MO. — David Cook performed to a crowd of more than 10,000 at Blue Springs South High School during his homecoming Friday. He sang a song we haven’t heard from him before: “There Goes My Hero” by the Foo Fighters. He also sang “Always Be My Baby” by Mariah Carey and “Living on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi.”

This statement is incorrect. A group of local school children sang the National Anthem. David threw out the first pitch, did a short play by play and interview in the 3rd inning, and sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” in the 7th inning stretch.

David Cook also sang Always Be My Baby, Livin on a Prayer, and My Hero (Foo Fighters) at his high school in Blue Springs. He said he wanted to sing My Hero on the show, but didn’t. Maybe it was a back up for Idol Gives Back week.
I drove up there for the concert and the game and it was so much fun. He’s awesome live with an acoustic guitar.

I was at the David Cook homecoming at Blue Springs South High School. Yes there were 10,000 people at just that event not to mention those who went to the parade and the concert in downtown KC. I myself got quite sunburned. What you might not be able to see on the footage is that they only let a select few onto the field. They like their real grass. The stands and surrounding hills had people on them. It was quite cool and you can view it on you tube. Really like the foo fighters song “There goes my hero” he performed.

I have a theory that Jeff Archuleta tryed to get booted from idol, he wanted the publicity, and he is hoping that by getting banned Archie’s fans will get mad at idol producers and vote like there’s no tomorrow.

for some reason i am NOT looking forward to Archichi’s 3 songs. However, the choice for DC of the Flack song is extreeeeeeemely intriguing!
SO….DWTS tonight…will Marissa finally get the ol’ soft shoe, or will her fan votes keep her in beyond Christion, Kristy, and Jason?
I love Marissa’s comment “I just wanted to prove that girls bigger than size 2 CAN dance” well probably not an exact quote, but that was basically what she said. You Go Girl!
Of course, both Laila Ali and MelB proved that, lol, neither of them were exactly petite either! but in a different way of course!

Thanks, Dierdre. That means two slow songs for Archie. I, like linny, think the Roberta Flack song is an interesting choice for DC. He can nail it, however, even if he uses Flack’s arrangement. (sort of like how “Music of the Night” came across)

Good morning all. I was listening to Q100 this morning talk about how Monchichi’s dad was banned. In the back of my head I was thinking - did he do that on purpose to get media attention or make his son’s fans mad and voting mad? Who knows. Simon C was quoted on TMZ as saying he has had no problems with the dad, “honestly”. And about inserting those lyrics - the band played with his take, so wouldn’t they know ahead of time that he was going to sing that part? I don’t know. All I do know is that my landline and my cell phone will be pulling double dialing duty (say that 5 times real fast) this week - DAVID COOK! DAVID COOK!!!

OMG! If DC does it the same arrangement but with his powerful vocals….. i may just melt too! I would love to hear DC re-sing Music of the Night, at some point. I think that was perhaps the most incredible performance ever on AI — i know i know … summertime (‘tasia) and rainbow (clay) were fa-dayum-tastic and all that… but… David seemed so rough-hewn at first… and to just drop the rough-rock-pop-modern altogether and pull off a song like Music of the Night with such depth of vocal talent and emotion…. OMG OMG OMG.
and David’s visually grown less rough-hewn and more well-put-together over the season as well. He’ll never be the male-model type, or a GQ model, or what-have-you. But he’s obviously taken some tips on appearance and the boy looks pretty good now! And the more he sings, LOL, the better he looks!!!
did anyone notice that Jeopardy had a whole category for AI this week? sort of fun. AI is DEFINITELY part of America’s pop culture, like it or not!

I just read an article in Entertainment Weekly about improving Idol. I like ALL the suggestions….even though it recommends getting rid of the commercials and group sing. Here’s their list.
1. Tone down the product placement. 2. Devise a dignified exit strategy for Randy and Paula. His auto-pilot appraisals, and…well, I suddenly forgot my thoughts about Paula. 3. Pick fewer-and fresher ‘mentors’. “did so many of this season’s greats have to be older than Dumbledore?” 4. Raise the minimum age to 18. “David Archuletta has a beautiful voice, but rarely has a talented singer been less fun to watch; to young to make(and too timid to explain)his own choices, he looks like a kid quaking outside the principal’s office every time he’s judged.” 5. Stop the medley madness. “…those Brady Bunch Variety Hour group sing-alongs are credibility grenades launched at the winner’s future career. Sex tapes on TMZ are less mortifying.” 6. The Delta Sigma Bimbo hand-waving mosh pit must go. Forever. 8. Less Talking, more singing “Why are song performances only 90 seconds? Are you looking for somebody who can sing, or just a pretty robot who can race to an unmotivated money-note climax in record time? “

Happy Monday Morning to All!!!!!!
Hope all you Moms had a very Happy Mothers Day yesterday. Mine was really nice spending the day with my children, grands and great grands. Only draw back was that it was the first Mothers Day without my Mom who passed away in Jan.
Glad to know that all of you survived the storms. My dad said that around 4:00am Sunday morning, the sirens in LaGrange went off and scared him to pieces, but all is fine.
I am so glad that Tricia backed up my story about DC not singing the anthem at the Royals game. Last Friday I had posted that he would not because by doing so, he would be bumping the kids out. Then Rodney’s report stated that he did sing it and I thought, oh no, you all are going to think that I made the story up. Whew, I sure am glad Tricia was on guard and made the correction. Thank you Tricia.
You know it would be nice if Fox made daddy Archie pay back the money that they had to pay out for his stupidity. The man sounds like a first class jerk.
I too, am waiting for DWTS tonight. Marissa has such a bubbly personality, I think she may hang in for another week. My pick to win is either Kristy or Jason. Just can’t believe that all my favorite shows are ending for the season. This has been a really fast season for all of them.
I know that D has posted some of the songs for Tuesday, but if anyone gets a complete list, please post it, as I am sure D will, if she gets the list. I will thank whoever does the posting in advance, so THANK YOU!!!!!

Awww come on, visitordude!!! That was on Friday and we had already warned people that we would be talking about Lost on Friday. Besides…how could anyone talk about Lost without writing a 200 word essay! :-)

Right, Dierdre. And, with Idol winding down, Lost is an interesting diversion. We only did it on Friday.

And will continue to do so! AND we were mostly courteous enough to warn with “Lost” in some form when we were going to do so, so that if you wanted to just skip on down the screen, you were warned in advance!

Some people just can’t accept that for one day we lowered our extremely cultured, topical, and poignant discussion to comment on LOST. People, please don’t let one day of trivial commentary taint you’re view that the comments on this blog will continue to consist of the highest level of written art.

Bottom line JT…Peeps out they’re were turned off by the lost talk.I just hope we learned from our mistakes and not talk about lost ever again.

If the blog was run by catering to other “Peeps” wishes, it would be a dark day for Flats in blogvile.

LOL, JT!
Truth be told Flat, some ‘peeps’ are ‘turned off’ by all your sports comments. So if you want to talk sports, almost entirely by yourself most of the time, we won’t object…which means we’ll talk about Lost if we want to.
However, the main topic of this blog is Idol and we very rarely stray from that these days.

Lara, I think Jeff Archueleta got banned on purpose,he craves publicity!
Deirdre, My Michael Johns theory makes perfect sense to me,it doesn’t make sense that he left idol so early. His wife had too much influence over him!
Glad to hear the rest of you also survived the storms.Menana ,your dad was not alone in being scared to death.
I look forward to LOSTfriday. I pick Marissa to be leaving DWTS this week.I pick Archie and his dad or Syesha to leave idol wednesday.I look forward to hearing that the winner of idol next week will be David Cook.
Sorry,Willie I had alot to say.

heck…. Adol, DWTS, Lost, and most everything else will be ending seasonally within weeks. Related to AI is SYTYCD (So You Think You Can Dance to the uninitiated) which is another Fox competition by the same producers (Lythgoe et al) as AI, and I think appropriate to talk about on this blog (unless RH nixes it) once AI is concluded May 21 (SYTYCD begins May 22, appropriately enough).
And to enlarge, flats, on what D had to say: talking about Lost — or anything else — should not be considered a “mistake” … if Rodney wanted this blog to be ONLY and forever more about American Idol, he’d have said so 3 years ago. Most of our comments, even about other shows, come in and around our AI comments and observations. Where the heck would YOU be if we ONLY talked about AI???? HUH??? if i had to go back to 3 years ago and list everything you’ve brought up and talked about, the list ALONE would offend Willie in it’s length!!!!
sheesh. i mean really!
bless your heart!

Here’s my take on DA’s father being banned: Could go either way. Either David A. will perform better, because he won’t have the pressure of his dad being around OR David A. could potentially flop, because he feels so lost without his dad being around. We’ll have to wait and see what happens. I, for one, hopes he does well without his dad, just to prove to him (his dad) that he does just fine without him.
Acceptable, Willie?

Do you think we should set up a program for Archie, similar to the witness protection program? He may need it if he loses idol,he needs to be protected from dad.We could also use it to protect David Cook or whoever Jeff decides to take his rage out on.

I am totally disappointed in American Idol. This was not about singing, it was about popularity. David A. was better on every song (Simon said “a knockout” until after he obviously heard the vote and apologized). The New England Patriots were perfect until the Super Bowl, and lost the final game. Cook lost the final round by a large margin and should have been out of the running. Your voting system is a joke and disrespectful of talent. I would urge you to consider changing your voting methods to have 1/2-2/3 of the vote dependent on judges and remainder on populaity (even this is unfair as a judge of talent). I find this current vote a disgrace and a deligitmization of American Idol as a “talent quest”. I am appalled!!!!
